December 2016 Neerim District Community Bank® Branch 2016 ‘Bill Cumming Young Achiever Award’. The ‘Bill Cumming Young Achiever Award’ is presented annually by the Neerim District Community Bank® Branch to a young person who has and is exhibiting the ideals espoused by the late “Bill Cummo” of achieving their best in whatever they choose. Nominees are high achievers in their studies or vocation and always strive to achieve excellence in their lives and the pursuit of their goals. The 2016 Bill Cumming Young Achiever Award Winner, Sam Watts, exhibits all of these qualities. Sam has been a resident in Neerim South for 13 years attending Neerim South primary School and then Marist Sion College in Warragul. He played basketball and cricket with local clubs which have given him strong ties with the Neerim community. He has also worked at both the local café and hotel before moving to Melbourne for studies. Sam successfully completed his VCE in 2015 at Marist Sion College and has begun studying Pharmacy at Monash Parkville Campus with the aim of returning to a rural community setting to apply his knowledge and skills to improve the health and wellbeing of the community. Although the move from our small country town to the city has been daunting and difficult at times, Sam has managed a distinction average during his first semester. He regularly returns home to play hockey and maintains his local connections. During his academic studies Sam was awarded numerous accolades from a Caltex ‘Best all Rounder Award’ and the ‘Australian Defence Force – Long Tan Award’ to a Melbourne University Kwong Lee Dow Award. In his sporting career he was awarded the ‘Lynne Kenworthy Award’ for hockey, a sport he has played for over 14 years, He not only plays the sport but also coaches and umpires. Community Grants.

Neerim South Public Hall.

Project name: Improvements to Hall.The Hall Committee wishes to install hand rails to the stairs up onto the stage in the auditorium thus improving safety to users and install a backsplash behind the sink in the kitchen to improve health and safety of users. Funding has been provided to complete this project.

Food Relief – Neerim District.

Project name: Installation of a shade awning outside the Food Relief.Food Relief will have a permanent shade awning erected at the rear of the Hall, outside the Food Relief depot, thus providing protection from the weather for their produce on display and shelter for the customers while they shop. Food Relief Neerim District provides a valuable service to the needy of the district.

Neerim District Health Service.

Project name: Purchase Tourniquet Machine.The Neerim District Health Service who operate the Neerim District Soldiers Memorial Hospital, applied for funds to purchase a Tourniquet machine as part of their project to update their equipment at the hospital.

The tourniquet machine is used in general and plastic surgery. Their current machine is a bike pump style which is not capable of holding the cuff at the required setting. The new machine is modern and meets all the needs of the patients and staff.

Community Grants 2016.This year 22 applications were received for community grants in 2016 totalling over $260,000. All applications were assessed by both the Community Enterprise Foundation™ and a sub-committee of the Board of Neerim District Financial Services Limited. Three Applications were recommended for funding with a value of $26,276. In addition two further applications were recommended for Challenge Grants.

This brings the amount returned to the Neerim community in the form of grants and sponsorships since opening in 2000 to over $2.4 million.

Grants were presented to this year’s successful applicants by Sabina Wakefield and John Delzoppo foundation shareholders of Neerim District Financial Services Limited.

Challenge Grants.

Challenge Grants are issued to organisations where additional funds are required to complete the project and the “Challenge” is made to the organisation to raise the extra funds before the grant is paid.

Neerim District Cricket Club.

Project Name: Pledge for the Fence.As part of the celebrations for the 100th show the Neerim District Cricket Club has decided to raise the funds to erect a fence around the oval at the showgrounds in Neerim. In order to fund this project the cricket club have started a fund raising program whereby contributors donate funds for a “Fence Panel”.

In assessing the application, our Community Bank® branch decided to Challenge the Club to raise the funds for the project and if successful, we will contribute $5,000 towards the fence.

Neerim Neerim South Football Netball Club.

Renovation to Kitchen at Phoenix Rooms.The Neerim Neerim South Football Netball Club applied for funds to remodel and renovate the kitchen at the Phoenix Rooms. The total cost for the project was estimated to be over $100,000. We have issued them a Challenge to raise the necessary funds for the project and if successful we have committed to contribute $25,000 to the project.

Youth Foundation Grants.Youth Foundation Neerim District is designed to give the young people of our community the opportunity to turn their ideas into reality.

This year, approximately $32,500 has been allocated towards projects, which have enabled the young people proceed with their goals, become more confident and learn skills which will help them to contribute back to the community. In the eight years Youth Foundation has been active in the Neerim District over $148,000 has been contributed to youth projects.

The following projects were presented with their grants.

Challenge Ride from the Mountains to the Sea - Neerim District Secondary College.The application for this program was completed by two students from the Secondary College. Students from NDSC have taken up the challenge to participate in the Great Victorian Bike Ride again in 2016. This program was partnered by the Neerim Progress Association.

Buddy Benches - Neerim South Primary School.The Buddy Bench Program provides a program designed to assist children who feel alone, isolated or down for any reason, plus it is an aide to sort out their conflicts. It can act as a peace area where kids can retreat. And then begin the conflict resolution process. The Buddy Bench gives school children a focal point for a better school community and better individual esteem removing concealed negative feelings.

This application was worked on by the students of the Junior School Council and partnered by the Neerim & District Lions Club.

Tennis Courts refurbishment - Neerim District Secondary College.A challenge grant has been given to the college to renovate their tennis courts.

Working with the Tennis Club these courts will become available for training and competition for club members and social tennis for community members. The grant was partnered by the Neerim & District Lions Club.

Musical Futures - Jindivick Primary School.The Musical Futures project will allow the Jindivick Primary School to purchase additional musical instruments in order that students will spend more time participating through playing instruments. The project was partnered by the Jindivick Progress Association.

In addition to the grants above being presented, students from the Neerim District Secondary College who participated in projects funded by the Youth Foundation - Neerim District during 2016, presented talks on the events they attended.
