FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO

As the weather warms up things appear to be slowing down in Sandstone but with the

Christmas lights starting to pop up we are reminded that the festive season is approaching once again. I would like to wish all residents and visitors a very Merry Christmas and Happy, Prosperous New Year and if you are travelling a safe incident free journey. I hope I can continue to work with you throughout 2017 to bring the projects the shire has planned to fruition. Although it was a sad occasion, it was good to see so many people turn up to the Rec. Centre to say goodbye to Alan Bloore and William and to wish them well in the next chapter of their lives. While we say goodbye to Alan and William we say hello to the new owners of Black Hill Station and look forward to a long and positive relationship with Kim and his crew. From the Council Chambers Council at the November meeting resolved to provide an annual donation of $3,000 to the St John Ambu-lance sub centre to help with their insurances and utility costs. You may not know it but unless they get a call out they don’t earn any income so while it is great that they are not busy it means that they need help to pay the bills. Council also adopted the dates of the Council meeting for 2017 retaining the 4th Thursday of the month as the meeting day except for January when there is no meeting and December when the meeting is held on the third Thursday due to Christmas. Tenders were also awarded for the purchase of two trucks, one replacing the rubbish truck and the second to replace the truck carrying the septic tank emptying tank. A third tender was awarded for a replacement rubber tyred roller for the road crew. The shires auditors were in Sandstone during the month to undertake the final audit for the 2015-2016 financial year and also to do a Financial Management Review which looks at the controls that we have in place to ensure that the risk of fraud or errors in the processing of financial transactions is minimised. At the time of writing this piece the reports had not been received. Finally this month I would also like to thank the staff and Councillors for their work during the year.

Although I have only been here a few months I can see that there is what seems to be a harmonious crew

that work well together to get things done and some passionate Councillors who care about our shire and

its future. There will be some challenges but lets work together make 2017 a great year for Sandstone

and remember that my door is always open if you have any suggestions for ways to im-

prove our shire.

ALAN AND WILLIAM’S FAREWELL

There was a fantastic turnout for Alan and William’s goodbye party. Everyone brought along some delicious food to share and a good time was had by all. I think there may have been some who were suffering a little the next day from the after effects of having too much of a good time the previous night. Alan and William will be very much missed not only by the Sandstone Community, but also by the many tourists who pass through and stay in our little town. William’s market stalls were very popular and his smiling, happy face while attending to everyone will certainly be missed. We wish them both all the very best in their future ventures on the Gold Coast.

TO SANDSTONE RESIDENTS AND PROPERTY OWNERS

The fire season is just about on us—please remember a total fire ban is in place from 11th December 2016 to March 19th 2017 inclusive. This includes all solid fuel barbeques. We ask residents and property owners to take action on the following, this will help to ensure that in the event of a serious fire our properties, town, friends and pets will survive. Within your boundaries:- 1 Remove all leaf, twig, branch, long grass litter from property 2 Move all wood piles or inflammables from around house and outer buildings 3 Make sure guttering is cleaned out 4 Make sure entries and exits are clear and uncluttered 5 In the event of a major bushfire you should have a hose, buckets, water cans, sprayers etc. filled with water to extinguish any small spot fires. This is your responsibility. The bush fire volunteers will be defending the perimeter of the town 6 Make sure house and outbuildings have all windows and doors closed—heavy smoke penetration can occur within minutes 7 Make sure your pets are kept inside with water 8 Be mindful of your neighbours property, health and safety We wish you all a safe and happy Christmas Chief Fire Officer Dave McQuie and wife Vickie. Deputy Fire Officer Banjo, and all the firie volunteers.

Water Supply—pg 108

As can be expected, an early priority in the development of Sandstone was the es-tablishment of a good water supply for the town. In 1907, the people of Sandstone were very discontented with the government of the day, as they felt that government services to the Sandstone townsite were slow in coming. Sales of blocks in Sandstone had netted the government 14,000 pounds; individuals had since spent 50,000 to 60,000 pounds in improvements on the blocks, but the government had still not supplied the basic public buildings. At public meetings held in early October and November 1907, the citizens request-ed what they considered necessary public buildings and services for the new town. These included:- * A water supply from the Wanderie mine shaft, which had an unending supply of 5,000—6,000 gallons per hour. * 3 inch piping to gravity feed water from a tank at the mine to the town tank. This water could be used to water the streets and thus keep dust to a mini mum, and, as well as being used for domestic use, could be used to fight fires in the town. * a police station, as the police officers were still living in tents. a court house, as the visiting magistrate was conducting court hearings in a

tent, with the only furniture being a table, a chair and a box. Following this meeting, a deputation suggested to the Minister for Mines, Mr Greg-ory, that the Wanderie mine would be most suitable for the town’s water supply be-cause of the quantity and quality of it’s water. He, however, suggested that the new government well to be sunk just to the north of the townsite, when equipped with a windmill and tank, would fill the need. As a result of this decision, a government well was sunk in August 1907, at the north end of the Sandstone townsite block lying to the east of Green Street. This was to supply water for the Sandstone townspeople and residential area, but one year later water was still being drawn from the well by way of a bucket and wind-lass. Even after piped water was available to most areas of town, there were many who relied on this well for their water. More next month….
