Students Cheer Up Elderly with Carols and Bingo

Lumen Christi students made several visits to St. Paul Hermitage at Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove this December. They sang carols, played bingo with the residents, and handed out Christmas cards. The residents enjoyed hearing the carols. During bingo, 7th and 8th-grade students sat among the residents and assisted them to hear the caller correctly and to mark the cards accordingly. Prizes were given to the win-ners. The residents had fun playing with the students.

By Arielle Richert Each year, from December 2-12, students and staff pray a novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Every morning after the 7:30 mass, we pray that the benefactors of the school and their families will be showered with the gifts of Christ’s tenderness, peace and mercy. Ellie Richert said, “I am really thankful for the people who help our school so we can do exciting things.”

We Are Each Other’s Advent Angels

By Mary Motyka

Many families have their own Christ-mas and Advent traditions. Lumen Christi is also a family, so the stu-dents and staff have a special tradi-tion as well , called Advent Angels.

Each child and teacher draws the name of a different school member and becomes that person’s Advent Angel. Throughout Advent, everyone prays for the one they drew.

The best part of this program is on the last day of the semester. The whole school forms a big circle in the gym, singing carols. Then the students may reveal themselves to the person they drew and give them a handmade Christmas card.

This Advent Angel card was made last year by Clare Hatley for Clarissa Ocampo.

“It’s great to spiritually connect with the other students,” said LCCS high school sophomore Annalise O’Daniel.

Seventh-grader Stella Kolb added, “It is a great feeling to be praying for someone during the Advent season.”

Featured Teacher: Tom Cope Motivates Students with His Unusual Humor

By Sophia Denney and Makayla Dowell

Mr. Tom Cope is our featured teacher this issue, selected by the Bleat staff for his funny personality and excellent teaching skills.

Mr. Cope has been teaching math and science at LCCS for nine years, and 40 years altogether. This year he is teaching 5th, 6th, and 7th grade science, Elementary Algebra, and Algebra II.

Mr. Cope was retired but wanted to continue teaching and found out about Lumen Christi through a web site for teachers. He said he likes Lumen Christi because the students are fun to teach, the parents are coopera-tive, and the faculty is good to work with.

“I like Lumen Christi because we have the freedom to teach the way we want to,” Mr. Cope said.

Lumen Christi students say they like Mr. Cope because of his unusual teaching style. He tells a lot of jokes (see Cope’s Corner) and even uses sarcasm to motivate students. He also uses the Socratic method, answering questions with questions of his own that lead students to the answer. Student comments about him include: “He includes everybody,” “He’s not boring at all,” and “He doesn’t let kids fall behind.”

Cope’s Corner By John Lesch Tom Cope, math and science teacher, has agreed to provide The Bleat with a joke for each issue this school year. Enjoy! “There was a priest who was in the same parish for 40

years. He started Mass the same way every time. He

said, ‘In the name of the Father and of the Son and of

the Holy Spirit.’ The congregation replied, ‘and with

you.’ Then he said, ‘Let the Lord be with you.’ The

congregation replied, ‘and with you.’ He realized

there was something wrong with this sequence and he

said, ‘There is something wrong with this.’ And they

said, ‘and with you.’

Before coming to Lumen Christi, Mr. Cope taught at Cardinal Ritter College Prep in St. Louis, Missouri, The Key School, St. Matthew, Scecina Memorial High School, and Manual High School. Mr. Cope has also coached middle school and high school soccer, as well as high school volleyball. He even coached high school volleyball at Lumen Christi for eight years.

Mr. Cope attended Rosary High School in St. Louis and went to college at Southern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He majored in anthropology.

Mr. Cope loves to read, hike, play chess and Sudoku, and most importantly, travel. Some places he has visited are: Barcelona, Spain; Paris, France; London, England; Pueblo, Mexico; Edinburgh, Scotland; Rome, Italy; Wales, United Kingdom; and most of the Caribbean.

Congratulations, Mr. Cope, on being our featured teacher!
