From All of Us
To All of You…
Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year!
May this season find you abundantly blessed and deeply thankful for the gift of family. From our
family to yours, we wish you the best of the holidays! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives.
Gingerbread for the Holidays
The sweet and spicy smell of
gingerbread is a clear indication that
the holiday season is in full swing. By
the time Gingerbread House Day
arrives on December 12, you may
have already indulged in eating this
seasonal treat.
The shape of gingerbread is
commonly found to be gingerbread
men and miniature houses made of
the cookie. This is why a gingerbread
house figured so prominently in the
tale Hansel and Gretel, first published
by The Brothers Grimm in the 19th
century.
Gingerbread has deeper roots
than Hansel and Gretel. Perhaps it
stems from the development of
gingerbread by German monks. No
matter the reason, warm, spicy
gingerbread has become a tradition
during the holiday season.
“Tour of Trees” Decorating Contest
Brightly Lit Trees, Festive Halls, Warm Spirits
Our 5th Annual Tour of Trees will look different this year as we
hold the event outside, making it possible for family and friends
to continue this tradition safely. It is important now, more than
ever, that we come together to add as much 'Christmas Cheer' as
possible. We invite you to join us as you honor a loved one,
represent a cause or company, or participate simply to 'brighten
the day' for so many!

Ignite Medical Program We've had an incredible opportunity to partner with Ignite Professional
Studies program through Bentonville High School. Through this
program, students participating in the medical classes spent their
semester doing Companion Clinicals. We consider ourselves extremely
fortunate to welcome 5 students going through these classes on a weekly
basis. We want to thank them for their dedication and personal attention,
as they spent hours talking, laughing, walking, and even bringing pets to
visit. They helped with the Halloween fun AND donated a lot of candy.
Tree of the Month - Spruce
Spruce trees are a type of coniferous evergreen in the Pinaceae (or pine)
family. These large trees grow up to an average of 60 to 200 feet tall. Spruce
trees sport distinctive four-sided needles that are attached in a peg-like fashion
to its branches.
They are used as Christmas trees, lumber, pulpwood (to make paper), and
medicine. Fresh spruce shoots are an excellent source of vitamin C. In fact,
Captain Cook used them to make spruce beer to prevent scurvy. Native
Americans used spruce roots to weave baskets and bind birch bark for canoes.
In Hopi legend, Salavi, a revered ancient chief, transformed himself into
a spruce when he died, making the trees sacred. Spruce trees are native to North
America and thrive in temperate climates across the world. They can live to be
around 200 years old. However, Old Tjikko, a Norway spruce located in
Sweden, is thought to be the world’s oldest living tree—at 9,550 years-old!

Meadows Happenings…Continued
The winter solstice, on December 21, is the shortest day of the year in the
northern hemisphere. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s a day where not
much happens.
December is the month with the shortest daylight hours of the year in the
northern hemisphere and the longest daylight hours of the year in the
southern hemisphere. Its name comes from the Latin word decem, which
means “ten.” That’s because the Roman year began in March, making
December the tenth month of the Roman year. When January and February
were added to the calendar, December became the twelfth month.
