The Church of St Peter ad Vincula, Hampton Lucy The impact of Hampton Lucy’s magnificent Church of St
Peter ad Vincula is undeniable. With its tower dominating
the skyline, the beautifully restored eastern apse (see
photo), stunning stained glass, lofty vaulted nave and a
fine church organ, it elicits a wow from all who visit - be
they worshipper or secular. Those who’ve enjoyed the
concerts will appreciate the superb acoustics and, with
seating for 200, it is a special venue for all genres of
music. The church is fast approaching its 200th birthday -
the foundation stone was laid in 1822 and the building
consecrated in 1826. Like all old buildings it needs regular
TLC and would greatly benefit from some upgrading to
develop and encourage its use by the community. We’re in
the process of re-establishing an Association of Friends of
St Peter’s to gather together an enthusiastic group to
promote grant-aid funding for essential maintenance, to
improve accessibility, and for the provision of essential
facilities such as toilets and a servery. If you would like to
help to conserve and enhance this beautiful building and
develop it as a community resource, please do get in
touch. We’re not appealing for donations at this stage.
This is an opportunity for the community to get involved with making plans and implementing them. For
information or to express an interest as a Friend, please contact Chris Northcote-Green on:
[email protected] or Jeremy Whyman on [email protected] CN-G
Hampton Lucy C of E Primary School and Nursery
The children have made a flying start to their school year, are working hard, and have had some incredible experiences. Just before half term they had an action-packed day with Coventry Building Society, working in
teams and learning about healthy lifestyles. Our Class 3 visited Kingsbury Water Park to become Stone Age experts for
a day, highlights of which were learning how to make fire and, of course, toasting marshmallows! We were so proud of the artwork that our children prepared for the
Harvest Festival Service in St Peter’s Church, and we were able to make a food
donation to the Fosse Food Bank. We always welcome prospective parents to our school and
nursery; please contact the office on 01789 840398
or by email to [email protected] to
arrange an individual tour. Staff and pupils are very proud of our school and will be able to show you
how amazing it is. As we prepare for the
forthcoming Festive season, we would like to wish you a safe and happy Christmas from all of the staff and pupils. HHt

Dear Lord, we pray for the upcoming General Election; that there will be a good turn-out even though it is winter. In Your mercy please grant the UK a new Parliament whose
Members can find workable solutions and a way ahead in our relationship with the EU. In
Jesus’ Name. Amen.
In the run-up to the General Election on Thursday, 12 December, there will be a number of opportunities to pray for
our nation throughout the Benefice of Barford, Sherbourne and Wasperton, with Hampton Lucy, Charlecote and Loxley. A special sheet of prayer suggestions will be available in all six churches from Sunday, 8 December. On
Wednesday, 11 December, the eve of the General Election, Barford Church will be open as usual during daylight
hours, but will also be open between 7.00 and 9.00 pm. Feel free to pop in, perhaps light a candle, and stay as long or
as little as you’re able. On Thursday, 12 December, all six churches in the Benefice will be open during daylight hours.
Why not drop in to pray before casting your vote? Rev’d NB and Rev’d RS
Christmas 2019
It was that time of the year when we give each other a customary Christmas greeting. Then I spotted, coming towards me, a neighbour who was going through a difficult time. His mother was very ill and the family were facing
a decision - do they suggest that the other son flies home from South Africa?
This is a situation which can arise for many of us with families who live in different parts of the world, but it is even more challenging at Christmas time. I needed a few moments to compose myself. Can I give an ordinary Christmas
greeting? I crossed over to my neighbour. We talked briefly, then holding his hand I added, in the real spirit of
Christmas, a meaningful and compassionate greeting.
Behind my thinking was the real core of Christmas in that God, by becoming a human being here on earth two
thousand years ago, understands our human feelings. He experienced sadness and pain and disappointment. He
came as Saviour to offer a life beyond this earth. In this context we can indeed wish each other a Happy Christmas
whether our present situation is one of joy or sadness.
As the traditional Carol Once in Royal David’s City puts it: Tears and smiles like us He knew, and He feels for all
our sadness and He shares in all our gladness.
A Happy Christmas to you all,
Neville.
Rev’d Andy Larkin Following his six-month secondment and a formal interview, we are pleased to announce that Rev’d
Andy Larkin has now been appointed to the Barford Group Benefice as Priest-in-Charge, the formal
title for our Vicar! For contractual reasons it’s not possible for this to happen immediately and Andy will be joining us and moving to Barford Rectory in early February 2020. In the meantime he will
be taking a three-month sabbatical. We pray for him, and for Jo and the family, during this time of
preparation for a new phase of his ministry, and we all look forward to welcoming them into our community in the new year. Rev’d Neville Beamer will continue to be the point of contact for
arrangements for baptisms and funerals, contact details are as above, and Charlotte Woodcock is the Wedding
Administrator for the Benefice, on 07505 306754, or e-mail to [email protected] CM
News from Charlecote Park
Christmas Mystery: For Christmas this year, the house is decorated for a fictitious 1920s party which has been interrupted by a despicable theft. We have two different trails to help you solve the mystery - one for
families and one for grown-ups. The trails themselves are around the grounds and outbuildings so do dress
warmly. We’ll have a prize for you at the end if you solve the mystery and there’s a small charge for each trail. Visit the house: We’ll be open for these Christmas celebrations every day between 30 November and 5 January
(closed only on Christmas Day) and you’ll need to book a free ticket online if you want to come into the house.
Normal admission prices apply if you’re not yet a National Trust member (under fives are free) and members need to pick up a free house admission ticket. Festive lunch: It's not too late to book for groups of eight or more for a
traditional Christmas Lunch in the Orangery (Mondays to Fridays until 20 December). There are more details on our
website, and you’ll need to book direct with the Orangery team on 01789 470488. (See The Notice Board page --Ed).
Christmas trees: We have potted Christmas trees in stock in Avenue Plants - not too far to come for your festive
greenery. Exercise is good for you! If you feel the need to walk off some of that seasonal indulgence, the parkland
offers an easy stroll in the countryside for all the family while you see what wildlife you can spot. Pick up our popular Winter Walks loyalty card from early January. MG
Wellesbourne & District Lions Club
Firstly, a reminder that the Lions are hosting Santa Goes 60’s,
Pop & Roll featuring Shadowfax, on Saturday, 7 December at
Wellesbourne Village Hall, (see The Notice Board page, Ed).
If you haven’t got your tickets yet they are priced at £10 to
include mulled wine, mince pies and a licensed bar, and are available from Lion Robin Hammond on 01789 621136, Lion Max Down on
01789 841567 or Lion Rob Parton on 01789 841073.
Ho! Ho! Ho! and away we go again! Christmas is getting very near and the Lions will soon be out and about in our
district with Santa and his sleigh! We are really looking forward to meeting you all, as is Father Christmas who will have his sack full of sweeties ready for the children. We’ll be helped each evening by volunteers from local charities
or organisations. Please help us to support them with your generous donations. Santa will visit The Crescent HRI, and
Hampton Lucy village on Tuesday, 17 December from about 6.00pm. Do listen out for him! Merry Christmas! AS

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI The AGM was held on 6 November. Kath Clarke, our retiring President, was thanked for all her hard work and enthusiasm and
especially for her huge commitment during the Centenary
celebrations. She was presented with a lovely floral bouquet, a WFWI Honeysuckle Brooch and a Marks & Spencer gift voucher. Jane Whyatt was then
elected President, supported by a committee of eight. Jane welcomed two new
committee members, and thanked the previous committee for their hard work and support. Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI now looks forward to another
Century of friendship, enthusiasm and fresh ideas. The winner of The Most ‘W’
Objects in a Jam Jar was Hilary Dunkerton. The evening ended with an amusing
version of Play Your Cards Right. The next meeting will be the Christmas Supper on 4 December in Hampton Lucy Village Hall. The committee will
provide the supper and the entertainment will be A Musical History through the Twentieth Century by Steve Allen.
Members agreed to support the local charity Shipston Home Nursing in lieu of exchanging Christmas cards and will leave a donation in a sealed envelope in the Christmas Post Box at the next meeting. PT
Dene Valley U3A On Tuesday, 10 December, at St Peter's Church, Wellesbourne and starting at 2.30pm, there will be a
presentation by David Templeman on Lady Arabella Stuart - The Queen that Never Was. David will
describe how Arabella, the niece of Mary, Queen of Scots, was brought up with the expectation of
becoming Queen after Elizabeth 1st - but this was confounded by a combination of exploitation, politics and religion which ultimately led to her daring escape to France. On Tuesday, 14 January - same time, same venue - there will be
a presentation by Adrian James on Southern Africa - Landscapes, Flora and Wildlife with pictures and tales about his
travels around Southern Africa, covering Zanzibar, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Non-members are welcome at a nominal charge of £2, which includes refreshments.
If you would like to know more about U3A and possibly even consider joining our organisation, please visit our
website athttp://www.denevalleyu3a.btck.co.uk or go to our Facebook page. JH

recorded their first CD in St Peter’s a year or two back, the
choir regularly perform in this area and refer to it as Cariceland! Tickets are £15 per person including a glass of
wine at the interval. Early reservation is recommended as
numbers will be limited to 180 and Carice concerts are
almost always a sell-out. Full programme and ticket details will be available in the February edition of The Grapevine.

Editors Musings
The Christmas season is always a good time to look back, take stock and thank friends and
colleagues for their generous help and support. The
Grapevine is delivered each month, free of charge, and has now been published for 215 issues without missing a beat.
That is only possible with the unstinting support of a cohort
of volunteers; those who regularly send in copy for publishing, who proof read my editing, who take delivery,
sort and count the printed copies and distribute them to the
individuals who, in turn, deliver them in each village. 580
copies are printed and distributed each month. Although it is a ‘free’ newsletter, there are still invoices to send and
process, bills to pay and accounts to balance and our
Treasurer quietly gets on with it. We must also acknowledge and thank Philip Wright-Howarth, whose
printing firm Think Design and Print delivers a quality
product, unfailingly prompt and at a very generous price! Thank you, one and all, and I wish you a Merry Christmas,
and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! AJW
