Employmentservices
The nearly 400 job counselling officesacross the province are rumoured to begetting cut back to 120. This week, MayorSusan Roline was quoted as saying: I ampleased that Merritt will retain an office.
That means that counselling jobs willbe maintained in Merritt & those look-ing for jobs will be able to get help fair-ly readily. But Mayor Roline is also con-cerned for the residents in Barriere,Clinton, Clearwater, Cache Creek,Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, who will lose
theirs, and have to travel to eitherKamloops or Merritt to receive the jobcounselling.
The TNRD board recently passed amotion asking its staff to look into pro-viding library space in small communi-ties as a place for employment programs.
There could still be changes in howthose employment services are deliv-ered here in Merritt. There will be moreinfo in the Fall.
Art is a Tree withMany BranchesA retrospective of art by Andrea Rogers
The Nicola Valley Community ArtsCouncil and the Courthouse Gallery are pleased to be able to present a retrospective of alifetime of art by Andrea Rogers. The exhibition starts today and runs through July 31st.
Originally from Apeldoorn, in the Netherlands, Andrea moved to Canada, July 1, 1948.After living in Prince George, Kelowna, New Westminster, Rosedale, she came to Merritt in1955 to stay. And though shes far from finished, shes already left an artistic legacy in heradopted home of 55 years: a wonderful quilt that hangs in City Hall, teaching piano to gen-erations of young Merrittonians, and lent her unflagging energy all these years to the FallFair, Baillie House, Friends of the Courthouse, Valley Visual Artists, and the Arts Council.
Andreas life has embraced the arts in an all-pervasive way, the influence of her moth-er who studied fashion design & operated her own clothing design studio in Apeldoorn.Andreas arts training per se began after high school, when she moved to Amsterdam. Shewas also enthralled by classical music, and studied piano at the Amsterdam RoyalConservatory of Music with the option to play concerts or to teach and she chose toteach, eventually becoming Merritts first qualified piano teacher.
Andreas love of art and culture only grew with her move to Canada. Many yearsago, she discovered the graphic & essential style of Inuit and First Nations artists. Shenaturally incorporated her own art into her everyday endeavours: fashion design,needlepoint, woodworking, drawing, photography, quilting, painting, gardening, evencake decorating. This exhibition shows Andreass wide-ranging interest & talents, withworks dating from the mid-1940s to spring 2010. It is a must-see!
There will be a reception on Friday, July 9, 6-8pm, with Andrea Rogers in attendance.Everyone is invited to help celebrate her achievement. Gallery hours are: Thurs. 4-8pm,
