SCHOLAR-ATHLETESAfter finishing with perfect 4.0 gradepoint averages in the classroom over the past academic year, rising seniors Hampus Gustafsson and Jonathan Lashyn, rising juniors Jace Hennig and Alfred Larsson, and rising sophomore Michael Babcock were named Hockey East’s Top ScholarAthletes to highlight a leaguehigh 19 allacademic selections in 201516.

For the third straight year, Gustafsson was once again named a Top ScholarAthlete thanks to his third consecutive 4.0 GPA, while Larsson earns the accolade for the second year in a row. Lashyn, Hennig and Babcock all earn the honor for the first time after finishing both the fall and spring semesters with perfect 4.0 GPAs. The latter three become the ninth, 10th and 11th studentathletes, respectively, to earn Top ScholarAthlete distinction.

They were five of Merrimack’s leaguemost 19 selections on Hockey East’s AllAcademic Team. Merrimack led the conference in allacademic picks for the third straight season and for the fifth time in the last eight years, as the Warriors continue to pace the conference in offtheice excellence in the classroom and the community.

Merrimack has had 20 players receive the Distinguished Scholar Award for being named to the Honor Roll all four years while playing hockey. Guy Ragault `93 was the first Warrior to receive the award and was followed by honorees Quentin Fendelet `94, Mark Cornforth `95, Rob Beck `97, Tom Johnson `97, Casey Kesselring `98, Martin Laroche `98, Kris Porter `99, Joey Gray `01, Lucas Smith `03, Ryan Sullivan `07, Andrew Braithwaite `10, J.C. Robitaille `10, Ryan Flanigan ‘12, Jordan Heywood ‘14, Thomas McCarthy ‘14, Justin Mansfield ‘15, Quinn Gould ‘15, Ben Bahe ‘16 and Matt Cronin ‘16.

Merrimack has won the Hockey East Top ScholarAthlete Award on 20 occassions. Fend elet was the first Merrimack player to earn the league’s Top Scholar Award, garnering the firstever award given in 1992. He also received the award in 1993 and 1994. Sullivan and Braithwaite also earned the Top Scholar Award three times in their careers. Flanigan, Smith and David Breen have also been recipients of the award while skating for the Warriors.

Mark Conforth became the first Hockey East Distinguished Scholar ever to play in the NHL when he was called up by the Boston Bruins early in the 199596 NHL season. Conforth received a job offer from the Top 10 Boston accounting firm of Peat Marwick, who allowed him to put the offer on hold as he perused his dream of an NHL career.
