Feedback

Georgie Deyell wrote to Adele and Louise who bring out the newsletter. Adele is the primary newsletter creator and Louise edits it for uploading to the internet. Georgie wrote:-

“You both do a tremendous amount of work during the month to get this newsletter out and I agree it’s not easy being, I guess, bombarded with numerous items to sort thru. Personally I'm finding that the newsletter is becoming cumbersome. Is there some way of squaring the photos beside the text and reducing the size of some pictures? Maybe this could reduce the number of pages. Another point which I'd like to make is, is there a way possibly to separate articles better so it’s clearer when your reading when one ends and the other starts?”

Georgie went on to say “I thought you would want to know what my thoughts were of the newsletter and to get some feedback from what I've been told.”

From Adele:- The text does appear as squared against photos when I check the PDF before sending it out so I hope that it arrives in the way it is sent out, although Georgie’s remarks implies that there is a problem. If anyone else is experiencing issues with this please let me know.

I believe that the community newsletter should publish what happens in the community and I have a personal policy to not reject any stories, reports or news items sent in.

I use photos because some new residents and non-permanent residents may feel they know people better if they see photos of locals and what activities happen in the community. Generally people LIKE to see their photos in the newsletter from other feedback received.

Overwhelmingly comments I receive are from people who are appreciative of the news and stories. For example some people have told me that they re-read the newsletter as they find it links them to our community and they find it so interesting. One lady told me she prints it off to hand on to a friend who does not have email and she loves it. Another lady told me she prints it off to put into her bed and breakfast accommodation for her visitors. Many non-residential newsletter recipients report that they value how it keeps them up to date with what is happening in their “other” home.

Still if there is something about the newsletter which can be improved upon, please share your thoughts as Georgie has, but I would be reluctant to make it deliberately shorter, as I would not know WHAT to leave out for one thing, and it goes against the main theme of this being a community newsletter for the community, so what should be left out is really impossible to choose.

As it is an email version, it will always be there to be read when time is available, and if it cannot be read one month, no one will be punished for not reading it - so I find the need to reduce it difficult to comprehend.

It is your newsletter and your feedback is welcome – keep in mind the above points when recommending changes because this is a link, valued by many who have left the district

they love, as well as those who live here and visit today.

6

From Louise: We love receiving your news. It makes our job so much easier and guides us as to what is important to you. As a suggestion, if contributors can keep their stories to up to two photos and up to about 300 words that is awesome. Many people still don’t have decent download allowances and slow internet connections so this will help everyone. And then Adele and I don’t have to agonise over how to trim things a little.

Who’s doing what lately? Clowning around in High St

The Merrijig Family Fun Day clowns met up with Sarah Rush and her children Mick and Annabelle early in March.

The clowns in this photo were Ailish and Erin Lunam and Michele their mummy. Other Fun Day clowns were Natalie Moggach assistant secretary and Kerrie Heyen, a niece of gymkhana organiser Jacquie Pollard.

Clowns spread happiness with free balloons and flyers and the whole town smiled – well who could help it with colourful characters wandering down the main streets of Mansfield.

GO MERRIJIG - McCormacks Trail Rides! If you watch Sunrise each morning you would have seen Sam the weather man taking a ride with McCormacks Trail Rides to Craig’s Hut near Mt Stirling. There were shots of Bruce sharing some of the high country history and songs being sung around the campfire.

Talk of the fantastic food provided on the trail rides and eventually the hut from The Man from Snowy River Movies. He gave a good sell for McCormacks Mountain Valley Trail rides, often referring to how close it was to Melbourne and how amazing the ride and his treatment was. Sam made it to Craig’s hut and here’s the proof. A fantastic bit of national promotion for our area and one of our wonderful trail ride enterprises.

Latoya Wards Australia’s Rodeo Queen came to the Merrijig Family Fun Day and said “this Merrijig family fun day was so much fun. I love little community events.” Latoya than said, “Thank you so much for having me today I was so honoured to help with the official opening by carrying the Australian flag. I also met so many beautiful little kids who all want to be cowgirls just like me...” Latoya went on to say, “This really touches my heart knowing that I can make a difference.” “I also got down and dirty in the muddy arena today thanks to all this beautiful rain we needed. I decided to take part in the novelty events to show the kids I wasn’t just there to look pretty”. “My horse Cruiser managed to pick up a 2nd in

8

the musical chairs, 3rd in the sack race which I had to do after the opening in my chaps ha ha ! We came 2nd in the bobbing for apples (yes I forgot I had non waterproof mascara on) and then to top of a 1st in the barrel race.” Finally Latoya concluded with, “So happy with the rain we had but also happy with the way he ran in the slippery conditions.”

News from Merrijig Hall

Major Facelift for Merrijig Hall store shed

Next time you drive into Mansfield cast your eyes to the left as you pass through Merrijig. You’ll notice a transformation to the former CFA shed at the rear of the Merrijig Hall. The shed used for storage has had a major facelift after being the victim of an attack of graffiti writing on the eastern end in November 2014. The offensive paint work was covered as soon as possible however with the landscaping coming to its conclusion the old grey tin shed looked an eyesore.

At a working bee on the Sunday of the Merrijig Fun Day weekend it was given a well deserved coat of paint which has transformed the shed into something which complements the hall, much nicer to look at too! This was possible thanks to a thoughtful Sawmill Settlement resident who donated a couch to the hall. When it became obvious we were not able to accommodate it in the building it was sold and the funds raised used to pay for the paint. A wonderful outcome.

With such community goodwill, grant money can go further and the hall committee sincerely thanks Carey of Carey’s Paint Place for a very special price on the spray gun hire and Greg Millott of Millotts Concreting who did the trenching work for the water system in the grounds free of charge.

9

Committee member, Laurie Jacob, carefully sprays the shed protecting the solar panels from overspray, watched by committee member Georgie Deyell.

********Busy month of promotions

Merrijig Hall committee and volunteers have had a busy time in early March with stalls at Merrijig Primary School fundraiser, manning the merchandise stall at the Merrijig Rodeo, then the next Wednesday attended the Mansfield Dot It Festival in High St and the following Saturday another stall was set up at the Merrijig Family Fun Day selling slice, biscuits, muffins and good spirit.

After much baking during the week to keep each stall stocked, the hall helpers were able to tell people at each event the features of the hall and the advantages of having their next celebration there, whether this be a wedding breakfast, funeral wake, meeting or activity which needs space.

To help tell the story a brochure has been produced which was offered to those interested.A great thing for the hall was the donation of a three metre gazebo by regular hall user, Lesley Leith. Lesley could see we were borrowing a gazebo each time and she had one in her shed she no longer had any use for. Many thanks to Lesley. It’s a beauty.

Committee ‘penguin’, Georgie Deyell created a great curiosity at the Mansfield Do It Festival. Georgie is holding the new brochure promoting the hall.

Visitors to Bally PatrickSurprising as it may seem, people actually organised their holidays to come and be volunteers at the Merrijig Family Fun Day. Pictured are Paul Sterio from Sydney, Gloria Harris from Invercargill in New Zealand and John Darby from the central coast in NSW. They came a few days early so enjoyed some of the treasures the area has to offer like a visit to Craig’s Hut for lunch, followed by a visit to Mirimbah Store for yummy hot chocolate and cakes before venturing into the Chinaman’s tunnel at Tunnel Bend. John had one wish, to have his photo taken with Latoya Wards as the one from 2015 was lost when his computer crashed.

Although they all worked hard on Fun Day they are keen to return in 2017.

See photo below for John’s dream becoming a reality.

Merrijig RodeoThe venue looked spectacular at sunset as usual and brought so many favourable comments about it being the best setting for an event. We are lucky to have such an outdoor venue in Merrijig and all built up by the community for the community.

Photo by Jo NobleThe crowd was fantastic and really well behaved that even the police commented on what a wonderful crowd attended the Merrijig Rodeo in their report to the local paper. Then the action was amazing. All in all an overwhelming success organised by a healthy new committee.

14

On Friday, March 18 it poured rain, wonderful, heavy, delicious rain. The only problem was the timing of this beautiful rain falling on the day before the long-planned and worked-on Merrijig Family Fun Day the next day.

As it was intermittantly raining during the working bee set-up time, many of the jobs to be done on Friday afternoon were not able to be carried out, so a planned early start on Saturday was the ticket.

On that Friday, the Jumping Castle owner phoned to say he was not coming on Saturday, as he was ill. The previous week the petting zoo lady had emailed to say she was no longer coming and the crepe cooking fella sent a message to say he was going out of business for the forseeable future so was not going to attend.

Oh dear ! Well everyone else was coming so onward and upward the co- ordination committee decided, as the displays of vintage motorbikes, vehicles and interesting cars were coming, along with all the gymkhana riders, and stall holders, food vendors and little motorbike kids for a riding

display. Not to leave out, most of the entertainers as well as some 50 volunteers who offered to help run the event. And the weather was clearing up, check out the rainbow at the working bee.

It was a bit overcast on Saturday but after a 6:30 start in the dark, everything was set up by 9:45 am for a 10am start of the fun day activities.

The gymkhana activities had got off to a rough start with a lovely pony, ‘Snow’, taking a fall in her float and injuring herself while trying to get up when stuck under the dividing bar. Fears of a broken bone dampened the mood for some time but the good

15

news is that after the vet finding no apparent broken bones she was carefully transported to a quiet stable where she is slowly recovering.

Yet again, this did not spoil the day and the gymkhana attracted more entrants than in its first year. Every event was happily participated in by enthusiastic young riders enjoying playing on their horses.

Events included fancy dress as seen here with Daisy being a fairy on her decorated pony, a mini bride and Ned in attendance. While others joined in the sack race towing their ponies behind them as they jumped along inside sacks. What a lot of fun.

For the first time Michele and Danielle, daughters of Cyril McCormack, (the man who provided the land used for Fun Day to the community) supplied a special trophy in his name for the best novice competitor on the day and the first winner of the lovely trophy was an keen young girl named Carys Waetford.

16

Some Photos provided by Collette Wilson make up this compilation below beginning from left top, some of the market stalls, with a couple of happy ribbon winners displaying their painted faces and another gymkhanna fancydress winner. Amongst the 50 volunteers were the team who ran the foot races pictured here Claire and Collet Wilson and Claire’s son Oscar who handed out the ribbons with Steven in the hat and Claire who organized the events. – Look Blue skies. Underneath there is a picture of one of Peter Arundel’s beautiful Indian Motorbikes below is the Yeah High country pipe band The popular Egg and Spoon race and some of the specialty cars displayed with the beaut little Fergie Tractor.

17

Compilation below shows the Mansfield Rudolf Steiner School orchestra who were the first entertainers on the stage giving a special depth to the atmosphere, then there’s Dave Lovick demonstrated how his well-trained dog Chang could control a mob of sheep wandering through the fun day crowd. Savannah and her dad, Leigh Kirley also performed. A happy baby Nelly threw her arms around her Secretary mummy Sonja, who left home before dark to set up for fun day. Dave Lovick organised the dog jumping while Georgie Deyell ran the dog look-alike contest and Latoya Wards, Australian Rodeo Queen 2016 posed with the historic horsemen. The lower photos show the Mayor who officially opened Fun Day with some of the Admin staffers Danni McCormack who volunteered for the second year, Adele, her mum who is Treasurer this year and New Zealand visitor volunteer Gloria Harris who is keen to come back

Top class LIVE music at Mansfield Golf Club On Saturday, April 9 Dave McMillan will entertain at the Mansfield Golf Club - he has previously performed at the Merrijig Public Hall and often stays in Merrijig when he is in our neck of the woods. Dave has the ability to almost transport himself into the character of the musician he is honouring when he sings; he is also a top class guitarist and an entertaining story teller in between songs when the mood takes him.

You will be guaranteed of a good show and right on our door step at the golf club where the meals are such good quality at great prices.

22

Dave has recently been visiting Merrijig again and provided this postcard glimpse of what you can expect when attending his show with talented pianist David Allardice.

Check out the selection of what Dave intends to include in the program. He is also able to play most requests as his repertoire is extensive, covering far more than these few gold recording artists.

What’s more Dave has offered to assist with advice and links to professional musicians if Merrijig does wish to run a music festival in the future. Live performers of this caliber don’t often bother with rural areas but as Dave has a history of visiting the Mansfield District he enjoys coming back again and again.

********A man goes in for an interview for a job as a TV news broadcaster. The interview went quite well

but the trouble was he kept winking and stammering. The interviewer said, "Although you have a lot of the qualities we're looking for, the fact that you

keep winking and stammering disqualifies you." "Oh, that's no problem," said the man. "If I take a couple of aspirin I stop winking and

stammering for an hour." "Show me," said the interviewer.

So the man reached into his pocket. Embarrassingly he pulled out loads of condoms of every variety - ribbed, flavoured, colored and everything before he found the packet of aspirin. He took

the aspirin and soon talked perfectly and stopped winking. The interviewer said, "That's amazing, but I don't think we could employ someone who'd be

womanizing all over the country." "Excuse me!" exclaimed the man, "I'm a happily married man, not a womanizer!"

"Well how do you explain all the condoms, then?" asked the interviewer. The man replied, "Have you ever gone into a pharmacy, stammering and winking, and asked for

a packet of aspirin?"
