ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Established in 2012, Merrick Preparatory School is a coeducational, private day and boarding school for grade 10, 11 and 12 students located in the Ottawa Capital region. With small class sizes averaging 10 students and a maximum school capacity of 60, students at Merrick Preparatory School benefit from individualized teacher-student interaction, hands-on learning, and a warm and friendly community environment. Our comprehensive programs allow our stu-dents to flourish both academically and socially.

Since its establishment, Merrick Preparatory College graduates boast a 100% placement rate to world-class post-secondary institutions and receive substantial entrance scholarships. In

2017–2018 our 15 graduates received 60 offers of admission to prestigious Canadian, American and UK universities, with over $105,000 in scholarships awarded. Ninety-three percent of our graduates received offers to their first-choice university!

We provide our students with the necessary academic and social skills to be successful in a rigorous North American learning environment. We actively integrate linguistic and social techniques within our teaching methods to adapt to North American cultural values, social standards and expectations.

In our small, caring community, we are committed to the individual success of every student. Merrick Preparatory School’s graduates will be academically successful, outstanding citizens, and leaders both in their future schools and in their broader communities.

COMMUNITY

Merrick Preparatory School is located in the heart of Canada’s Capital Region in the village of Merrickville, voted “the prettiest town in Canada”. Conveniently located

only 45-minutes from the nation’s capital, Ottawa, we are in close proximity to all of the national resources such as Parliament, museums, galleries, National Arts Centre, the Rideau Canal and the world-famous Gatineau Park. Merrick Preparatory School is ideally situated only two hours from historic Montreal, Canada’s third-largest city and centre for French-Canadian culture, and four hours from Toronto, Canada’s largest city and the world’s greatest multicultural centre. Our engaging Residential Life Program takes full advantage of our strategic location while the small, clean and close-knit community of Merrickville allows our students to

remain focused on their studies. Business owners and residents alike know our students by name, and this creates an extremely safe, family-like environment where our students flourish!

THE BOARDING SCHOOL ADVANTAGE

Studies conducted by Statistics Canada prove that students enrolled in Canadian private schools perform better aca-demically than students attending public schools. On standardized reading, math and science tests, private school students out-scored public school students by 9%. In a survey conducted by the Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), 87% of board-ing students reported that they were very well prepared for the rigours of university life compared to only 39% of public schools’ students.

Private school students not only excel in academics, they also engage more frequently in extra-curricular activities such as sports, social clubs and community service. Additional life skills, such as initiative, collaboration, resilience and independence, are developed and matured.

As a leading private day and boarding school, Merrick Preparatory School is committed to providing our students with the absolute best of academic and social opportunities. Parents choose Merrick Preparatory School because they recognize the benefits gained by their children, including a competitive learning advantage and the social skills required to be successful in their future academic and career endeavours.

ENGLISH AS A

SECOND LANGAUGE

Merrick Preparatory School supports high-quality learning and improves students’ prospects for success in a post-secondary environment, and in life.

Our programs are tailored for students who are learning the language of instruc-tion while at the same time learning the curriculum. The curriculum in our English as a Second language (ESL) Foundation, grade 9—12 high school credit, and University Qualification Year (UQY)

programs are specially designed and instructed by certified ESL teachers. We ensure that our English language learners have the maximum opportunity to achieve advanced proficiency in academic English to allow them to integrate successfully into their selected post-secondary programs.

At Merrick Preparatory School, we adopt a holistic approach to language acquisition whereby it is not only the commitment of our teachers that ensures success, but the dedication of our entire school community, including our residen-tial life staff, administrators and support staff. Every moment is a teachable mo-ment at Merrick Preparatory School, and the reward for this committed effort is a dynamic and vibrant school environment that celebrates diversity and enriches the experience of all our students.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL

DIPLOMA (OSSD)

Ontario ranks “A+” in high school attainment, the top ranked overall Education and Skills report card in the world!* The Ontario Sec-ondary School Diploma (OSSD) requires the completion of 30 course credits, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC), and 40 hours of community service.

Our small class sizes averaging 10 stu-dents per class, an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio, Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), ESL & Guidance certified teachers, and 140–145 instructional hours per course compared to the Ontario standard of 110 hours, ensures our students’ success in obtaining the OSSD and a 100% pass rate in the OSSLC. In addition to OCT, ESL and Guidance certified certifications, over 75% of our staff have earned post-graduate degrees in various fields of expertise.

COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING

As an OSSD requirement, students must complete 10 hours of community service per year. At Merrick Preparatory

School we value community engagement and developing students who will be contributing members of their community. As a result we require our students to complete 40 hours of community service regardless if they are with us for one, two or three years – more than doubling the Ministry’s requirement. Through community service learning our students develop an awareness and understanding of civic responsibility, the impact they can have, and the contributions they can make in supporting and strengthening their community and leading the way to becoming global citizens.

EVALUATION

Student academic evaluation is based on a combination of continuous assessment of course work such as essays, projects, quizzes and assignments which comprise 70% of the overall course grade, and the culminating assignment and major exam which comprises 30% of the overall course grade.
