The institute’s vision is to create an integrated, comprehensive care-delivery system linking patients and physicians throughout the care continuum. Through innovation, teamwork, collaboration and compassion, Mercy will greatly enhance care for patients, families and physicians.

The Sacramento region’s rapidly growing population, coupled with an unprecedented growth in the number of people over age 65, is increasing Mercy’s volume of neurologic patients. Research has shown that, between 2009 and 2019, the Sacramento region will have seen a 172 percent increase in residents aged 65 or older—a group more likely to experience neurological diseases and disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and strokes. Moreover, an increase in population size means a greater burden on trauma centers and emergency departments to treat neurological injuries.

The Mercy Neurological Institute of Greater Sacramento currently provides comprehensive, expert care to the community. But it must expand to meet burgeoning community need. Combining state-of-the-art technology with Mercy’s breadth of neuroscience experts into one health-care system will mean faster diagnoses and faster, more accurate treatments for patients who experience such time-sensitive illnesses as strokes.

Philanthropy is the cornerstone of the Mercy Neurological Institute transformation. The institute has identified five areas for support that align with Catholic Healthcare West’s core values:

COLLABORATION

Funds are needed to expand the Mercy Telehealth Network to ensure timely access to high-quality, specialized health-care services not available in rural areas. Mercy neurology experts connect remotely with partner health-care providers who have patients needing complex neurological care not available at their facilities.

Philanthropic funding also will support interdisciplinary patient care and education of other Mercy medical professionals and providers at telehealth sites. Support also is needed for Continuing Medical Education sessions aimed at keeping physicians, nurses and other medical professionals at the forefront of neurological science.

DIGNITY

High-quality care that focuses on body, mind and spirit is at the heart of Mercy. Funds are needed to grow Mercy’s diversified speciality clinics, which provide care not available elsewhere in the community. Patients are empowered to manage their diseases and illnesses in their own community, within the Mercy system.

STEWARDSHIP

Careful stewardship of resources is important to Mercy. Funds are needed to endow physician and nursing positions, which will keep ongoing administrative costs low while sustaining the institute’s programs and services.

JUSTICE

Inspired by the Sisters of Mercy’s tradition of compassionate care for all people, Mercy is committed to providing care to every patient in need, no matter their financial situation. Funds are needed to support under- and uninsured patients who otherwise could not afford life-saving neurological care.

EXCELLENCE

State-of-the-art equipment is central to expert neurological care. Philanthropic funding is needed to purchase cutting-edge technologies such as intraoperative CT monitoring and a Tesla 3.0 MRI scanner, which allows radiologists to perform scans with increased speed and enhanced detail. Funds are also needed for transcranial dopplers for continuous patient monitoring. With such equipment housed at Mercy Neurological Institute, patients can remain in their community for treatment, rather than be referred to Bay Area or other out-of-town hospital systems.

The Mercy Telehealth Network

Patients who live far from urban centers often need the attention of a specialist familiar with the latest advancements and medical capabilities beyond what is available in their area. Available 24/7, the Mercy Telehealth Network connects patients and their attending physicians to Sacramento's Mercy General Hospital or Mercy San Juan Medical Center via two-way live video/audio feed and image sharing technology to support diagnosis and treatment for optimal patient care.
