Assalamualaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh,
There was once a wise man who said, “In life people can take everything away from you, your house, your car and even your family but the one thing that they cant is your knowledge, so preserve your knowledge
and act upon it as without acting upon it you are wasting your life and by acting upon it you will have the world in your hand…”
This man was my father (rahimullah) who recently passed away (may Allah swt give him a highest honor in Jannah Ul-Firdaus). My father said these words to me when I was at the age of 12 and his words still resonate in my head as today I am striving to live my life and promote the importance of Knowledge & Action thru the work we are doing at Mercy Mission both locally and worldwide.
The last 3 months have been a huge learning process for all those at Mercy Mission, we started off with purifying the diseases of our hearts in July with the AlKauthar course Heart Therapy, we launched our food project Charity Right which to date has provided over 10,000 meals over a period of a month and we raised the awareness of the growing number of Muslims that apostate from Islam via the Save Maryam campaign.
Da’wah work is not easy, our beloved Prophet (PBUH) as well as all the Anbiya of Allah (swt) encountered many challenges and tests whilst propagating and inviting people to Islam. Allah (swt) will put those who he loves thru tests, trials and tribulations but when your intentions are pure and you are doing it for the sake of Allah (swt) alone, then He rewards you beyond belief, as His mercy is endless. It is this reward that we at Mercy Mission seek, it is this energy that our team members thrive upon and it is with this hope that we do what we do so we can see his blessed face in the Hereafter.

On Saturday 22 September 2012, the Mercy Mission Malaysia office was delighted to have had a visit from the Mufti of Ukraine, Sheikh Akhmed Tamim.
Sheikh Akhmed was on his five-day tour of Malaysia visiting local government officials, dignitaries and local Islamic organizations. He was greeted by the General Manager of Mercy Mission Malaysia, Sajid Hussain.
He was really impressed with what Mercy Mission has been able to do over the past few years and looking forward to what we have in store for the future. Having seen our achievements, Sheikh Akhmed is very keen to bring Mercy Mission to the Ukraine, Russia and the Balkan countries. The Sheikh stated that this region has over 50 million Muslims who require educational and social projects in order to help them in the Deen.
With the recent announcement of Qatar being the latest country to join the Mercy Mission family, Ukraine could be the next frontier for Mercy Mission.

Alhamdulillah AlKauthar Kuala Lumpur hosted a fantastic Heart Therapy course with Sheikh Yahya Ibrahim on 14 & 15 July in University Malaya in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia! with over
450 students attending, it was the biggest course that AlKauthar Kuala Lumpur have held. It was a mind-engaging, heart-softening and tear-jerking course going over the diseases of the heart and soul and ways to overcome it.
Sheikh Yahya is one of the favourites amongst AlKauthar instructors. It was no wonder then why this was the highest attended AlKauthar course in Kuala Lumpur! We also had two special guests during the course: Sheikh Daood Butt who’s the latest AlKauthar instructor and Sheikh Mohammed Cheppih all the way from the Netherlands who came by for a surprise visit. Just before the lunch break on the second day, Sheikh Daood gave some tips on how to prepare for the then upcoming month of Ramadhan. MashaAllah the students loved it.
As with previous courses, we have a Mothers’ Room for mums who are attending the course with their small children where we have activities arranged just for them while their mums concentrate on the course. MashaAllah, the kids really enjoyed it and produced a few pieces of art that said, “Sheikh Yahya is Awesome”, “Welcome Ramadhan” and more!

Sheikh, who have been the role models of your life?
The obvious answer any rational-minded Muslim could give to such a question is the Prophet (peace be upon him). There are so many fascinating things about the Prophet (peace be upon him), what I personally appreciate of his example especially during this point in my life is how he was able to achieve so much and yet still able to function superbly as a father and husband.
What drives you to keep pursuing knowledge and studying the Deen?
My students. It is sometimes the case that a teacher will always strive to be better or more for his students when he realizes that people are benefitting through him and his work. In fact, one of the most memorable supplications that a student of mine ever made for me was “May Allah increase you in knowledge so that you can teach us more.”
How did you first get involved with AlKauthar?Sadly, this is not such an interesting story. I was a friend of AlKauthar founder Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury prior to AlKauthar’s existence. I remember him mentioning his desire to develop AlKauthar so many years ago, even a time when he showed me a the AlKauthar brand for the first time. He told me that he would be interested in working together once I finished my studies, I never really thought much about this until several years later.
Each issue we take time out with one of AlKauthar Institute’s instructors and find more about them. This issue’s special guest is Sheikh Furqan Jabbar!

Apart from learning and teaching, what are your other passions in life?
I would say my children. Although my children can still be categorized as ‘babies’, it is my sincere hope that they eventually be imbued with enough guidance that they turn out to be better than their parents. I think this should be a goal every sincere parent should have for their child. I am also quite passionate about Islamic finance and the Islamic way of doing business; I always try to promote awareness whenever I can.
Any favourite pastimes or hobbies?
Sadly, my responsibilities with the family and the wider Muslim community leave me with very little time for pastimes and/or hobbies. I do however enjoy watching well-made documentaries (especially about history). When I was much younger, I was very much a sci-fi fan. Much to my parents relief, it was something which I gradually left as I got older.
What are you looking forward to the most about your trip to Malaysia?
I have been to Malaysia before and have had a few Malaysian friends in the past, one thing which I have been able to recognize is that Malaysians are generally hospitable and friendly people. Had I been able to find work related to my field (Islamic finance), I would have surely settled in Malaysia. Allah, the Almighty, however decided in His great wisdom that I settle in Canberra.
Fancy eating some durian?
Durian? Sounds like a nationality like “Australian.”
To answer your question; Yes and no. I hear they taste wonderful but smell awful so I have mixed feelings!
You will be teaching one of the latest AlKauthar courses, Worst of the Worst. Why should students attend?
Why shouldn’t they attend? Through this course we will be able to journey to the worlds of three separate tyrants – the original axis of evil; Satan (Shaytaan), Pharaoh (Fir’aun) and the Dajjal (aka the Antichrist). Isn’t that an interesting course in and of itself? We’ll be taking a look at the back stories of each of these very-real villains that have been mentioned even in Jewish and Christian texts as well as Islam. More importantly, we will try to understand the relevance of such personalities in own lives and what these three actually have in common.

With an ever-growing amount of food being wasted and a dramatic rise in the numbers of families falling into poverty, the need to rescue food and clothes and re-distribute
to those in most need kept growing. Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury and Mercy Mission saw this and realize that it is time for action. That’s when Charity Right was born.
Charity Right was officially launched during the Being ME sisters’ conference in June where funds were raised and we immediately went to work by procuring 202 bags of rice and distributed them to a Somali refugee community in Gombak, the community of the blind in Brickfields as well as an orphanage in Kota Damansara in Ramadhan.
Work then continued after Ramadhan after we were able to secure a van do pick up food and deliver them to the beneficiaries more efficiently. Alhamdulillah, two restaurants in Kuala Lumpur have agreed to donate extra food to Charity Right on the weekends. As a result, we have been consistently able to provide 400 meals to the needy every weekend for the past five weeks. That’s 2000 meals for 2000 people! Allahu Akbar!
By reducing food wastage, by empowering individuals, by raising awareness amongst food outlets we encourage everyone to actively take responsibility of their communities.
Since its inception in June, Charity Right has served over 10,000 meals to the homeless, blind, disabled, orphans, and the impoverished and neglected around Kuala Lumpur. And the work does not stop here as we are constantly looking for more partners, suppliers, volunteers and sponsors to further grow this project. From weekly to daily, from one van to multiple vans, from just food to clothing as well as shelter and from Malaysia to the rest of the world. This is so that one day no child would go hungry in our communities, no family would be unprotected and no individual would remain unclothed.

The Madinah Centre:Women’s Shelter
The Madinah Centre Women’s Shelter is designed to complement
existing facilities and communities by providing a second level of support by providing specialized services to assist the english speaking Muslim
community in Kuala Lumpur on issues that they are currently facing. These
challenges include dealing with social issues particularly related to families
and new Muslims.

The Madinah Centre:Charity Right
Malaysians waste 930 tonnes of food a day, equivalent to 93000 of
bags of rice. Unbeknownst to many, there are still people in our country
suffering hunger, poverty, joblessness, illness and malnutrition. The Charity Right project aims to rescue surplus
food, clothing, medical supplies and redistribute to the hardcore poor and the homeless around Kuala Lumpur.
Food rescue and redistribution is only the beginning and serves a platform for future empowerment projects for
the needy.
Women’s Resource CentreFocuses on empowering women
to be successful in all facets of their lives, by facilitating
knowledge, awareness and the acquisition of necessary skills to harness the reigns of personal
growth and success.
New Muslim CareProvides an engaging and holistic
program that creates a positive impact on the lives of those who
accept Islam and begin living as Muslims, striving to provide
support and services at every step.
The Women’s Shelter Home Aiming to provide trainings,
workshops and Qur’an classes as well as a temporary shelter and counselling services for women
who have been victimized by domestic violence, rape and
incest.

Reciting the Qur’an with Its Pure Meaning
Many a time, we find ourselves reciting the Qur’an without taking a moment to check the translation
of its meaning. Yes, we know that the recitation carries a reward for us, but would it not be more
rewarding for us to live our life according to the Qur’an? Rather than just reciting it without increasing
our knowledge? Pondering over the Qur’an will result in an increase in our devotion while reciting as
well as increasing our Imaan, and allowing us to draw nearer to Allah.
Giving Preference to What Allah Loves Over what you
Love when you are Overtaken by your Desires
Each and every one of us faces this challenge many times daily in our lives but when we subdue our
nafs and give up doing what we want to do at these moments out of remembrance of Allah we feel
good about ourselves. This encourages us to repeat this and thus draw nearer to Allah. When we do the
opposite and give in to our desires we often end up regretful and discouraged and feel far from Allah.
Doing Good Voluntary Deeds After Completing Obligatory Deeds
As is stated in a Hadith Qudsi: “My slave continues getting closer to Me by performing voluntary deeds until I love him.”
[al-Bukhari] . This can be as simple as performing the prescribed Sunnah prayers and extra Nawaafil after our compulsory
prayers, or fasting extra days throughout the year instead of fasting only during Ramadhan. It’s common practice of many
Muslims today to stick to the obligatory deeds only and feel satisfied with the bare minimum. Imagine if, at your job, you
were to go above and beyond what your boss required of you. Would that not impress them and increase their regard for
you? Now how can you imagine any less when it comes to your Creator?
Constantly Remember Allah Under All Circumstances
Our beloved Prophet (pbuh) is the perfect example of this aspect. Following what he used to say and do and what his
Companions understood is a sure way of showing Allah our love for Him. This is an aspect that many Muslims deviate
in, although their intentions may be good. For example one may choose to increase the number of raka’ah in Fajr
salaah in order to show that they love Allah more by doing extra. However, we cannot exceed what the Prophet and
his Companions did in showing their love for Allah since they were indeed amongst those who loved Allah the most. 2

Love of AllahFamiliarizing Yourself with Names and Attributes of Allah
As humans we tend to indentify each other through qualities such as “that kind man” or “this generous
woman” and by doing so we are separating and distinguishing them from the normal standard. How
then will it be with Allah who is far above and beyond anything we can imagine? Knowing His qualities
and understanding their implications allows us to create a connection with Him and enjoy a closeness
with Him that we could never have with a stranger whom we knew nothing about.
Doing Ibadah in the Last Third of the Night and ending that by
Asking for Forgiveness and Repenting
When we love someone or something we go out of our way to show it. We make extra efforts to ensure that it
is known that we love that person or thing. Knowing how hard it is already to wake for Fajr, which is obligatory,
imagine the love we must require in order for us to give up our sleep and the comfort of our beds to simply do
something extra for Allah. What better way is there for you to prove your love for Allah than by making this
effort when the rest of the world is sleeping? It is like having a personal, private meeting with Him.
Sitting Amongst the Beloved of Allah
Sitting with the people of knowledge not only benefits us through speech, but also allows us to learn from
their actions and mannerisms. Isn’t it obvious that we have two ears and one mouth therefore we should listen
twice as much as we speak? In today’s culture of Twitter, Facebook, and IM, we are always ready to comment
on anything and everything whether we really mean it or not. If we were to add up all that we say (or type),
measuring what was beneficial to others or what wasn’t, what would our balance look like?
Keeping Away from Everything that Comes between the
Heart and Allah
The heart should always remain clean and pure, free from sin and the disobedience of Allah. Making
sure that our intentions are solely to please Allah grants us sincerity and honesty in our dealings and
actions, and helps us avoid cheating or unjust transactions. Don’t ever lose hope and trust in Allah, no
matter what thoughts run through your mind. Never let your thoughts discourage you from turning to
Allah and asking him to pull you out of your situation and make you excel in worshipping Him.
Observing Allah’s Kindness, Goodness and Bounties, Both
Hidden and Open
When we simply stop and take a minute, or two, or ten, to ponder over everything that we have been blessed
with by Allah and how helpless we are, we can’t help but feel a tremendous gratitude towards Him. Sometimes
things just “go our way” and we can’t explain how or why but the “pieces just fit.” We tend to forget that this is
from Allah and then when things fall apart we feel upset and wonder why Allah burdened us and fail to see the
strength we gain from these tests.
The Heart Being Soft, Subdued and Meek before Allah
Someone with a soft heart demonstrates compassion, sympathy and empathy. They are caring and considerate
and feel things strongly. They are not proud and above helping others no matter what the situation because
they realize that everything they have is from Allah. They do so with sincerity and true genuine feeling. They
are not afraid to cry when they see or hear about something sad. They turn constantly to Allah for help and trust
Him completely knowing that they alone can do nothing.
When I was growing up, like most kids, I had always thought of death as something that happened to
other people’s relatives and of course, old people. But when I was in 5th grade, one of my best friend’s house was destroyed by a landslide and she lost her little sister in that tragedy. It changed my perception of death totally.
I remember that Sunday morning when my mom got the phone call. I was utterly shaken and didn’t know how to react because death was so foreign to me. My friend’s mother who’s just lost her daughter was crying but was composed as she was hugged by those who gave their condolences. I tried very hard to look as sad as possible like everyone else but my eyes gave me away. I saw a close friend of the deceased and I remembered how empty her eyes looked too, and I knew she was in a state of shock and confusion just like I was. The second we began to leave, I broke down into tears.
Being the eldest of 7 at the time, I was always surrounded by my siblings. Even though there are many of us, we would always notice if one of us was absent. Realizing that death meant that it would rob us from each other felt like a boulder in my chest. The loss would mean a complete removal of that person from existence; their physical body, their voice, their breath and even their shadow. It was mind-boggling to the 11 year-old mind of mine. I thought about where they would go after death, what would happen to them, who’s going to keep them company, considering they will be all alone... I had
a lot of questions. As I retired to bed that day, I felt a genuine fear of death, now that I knew that it was the most real thing that could happen to anyone. Indeed, for Allah says, “Verily every soul shall taste death...” [Ali ‘Imran: 185]
I started to think about death often, and realized how big of a fact of life it was, and knew I had to grow up.
I’d known a girl whose father passed away and in the same week, her uncle did too, and the next few weeks, her own mother. When her mother spent her last hour in the hospital, I was there, watching her slip in and out of consciousness. The devastating moment forced all other matters to evaporate from being my concerns. “This dying woman could be me or anyone of us”, I had thought. As I stood there, painfully waiting, I read the Quran louder, and harder if it was even possible, as if to plead to Allah to spare her. I was 15. It was terrifying and it introduced me to a whole new level of sadness. I, being only a friend, felt that my wounds were violently being ripped open and stitched up again only to be opened again! SubhanAllah. The idea that someone you have always known all your life vanishes from being, leaving a useless skeleton of a body for nobody’s benefit was something I never contemplated on before. I swear by Allah that it is His Divine protection that was what’s preventing the girl from being damaged as a result of the tragedies that were befalling her.
The next few deaths were of a dear teacher, my own grandmother, a classmate and recently, a friend’s mother whose death
affected me deeply. It is mainly because the loss has left my dear friend with no choice but to play the role of a mother to her younger siblings. This means sleepless nights and constant worrying about the family and feeling alone. All the burden a mother usually carries was transferred to her, forcing her to be both emotionally and physically strong. I can only pray for Allah’s Mercy to never leave her.
Despite these incidents, death still stays as foreign to me as I first woke up to its reality. We are scared of the things we have no knowledge about. No one has lived to tell of their experience, and there’s no running away from it, for Allah states, “Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!” [An-Nisa: 78]
To most of the youth, death is something you only think about when you grow old and it’s not worth worrying about because life is short. Such thinking is contradictory to what the Prophet (pbuh) said; “Truly smart is the person who controls his desires and prepares for the life after death.” Death is but a harsh reminder for all those who are still alive and breathing!
As the biggest consumers of entertainment, the youth are the most targeted group of brainwashing campaigns. A lot of songs promote the superficial idea of spending one’s youthful years by forgetting reality, drinking and basically enjoying all the fun you can have in this life. Little do we realize that these pleasures are only momentary and they divert us away from the reality of death and accountability. The Prophet (pbuh) reminded us to “Remember much,

that which cuts off pleasure: Death, since no one remembers it in times of difficulty, except that things are made easy for him, nor mentions it at times of ease, except that the affairs become constricted for him.”
Real reminders such as death are such a blessing because they remind us of how Allah wants us to live our lives prepared for the life after it. The best of mankind (pbuh) himself told us to “Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller on the road.” We should always think about how we would spend our last day, our last moments, down to the last seconds of this lifetime. If we do not pay heed to these reminders as we ought to, it would
be like missing the one-way flight out of a forsaken land.
Being the most vulnerable age group in society, the youth needs to be educated on the realities of life just as how they are being ‘educated’ by the industries of fashion and music. Since these markets appeal to them and have earned a spot in their lives, there has risen a need for a bigger movement to exist for the purpose of expelling these false notions, thereby providing more meaningful comfort, help and company, catering to the real needs of the youth. Let Solah be their source of comfort, Jannah be their ultimate desire, and Allah’s displeasure be what they fear most.
We spend a lot of time for the beautification of the physical body that will rot away when the soul departs from it. It’s time we realize that the beautification of the soul is what’s going to pay off, for it secures us a good spot in the Hereafter.
Let us not be like those who will plead with regret as mentioned in this verse: “Until when death comes to one of them, he says: ‘My Lord, send me back again so that perhaps I may act rightly regarding the things I failed to do!’” [Surah al-Mu’minun: 99-100]. So before death comes knocking at your door, weigh out the best of both lives and choose wisely.
