As concerns about the country’s housing access and affordability grow, Mercy Housing Mountain Plains focuses on bolstering services and updating our properties to ensure long-term affordability. For the first time, we began offering Resident Services at two properties in Rapid City, South Dakota, adding several new programs across the region while expanding upon existing ones. These have proven successful in building greater stability and hope for our residents.

Among the many property upgrades we completed last year, the most noteworthy is a major renovation at Holly Park Apartments in Commerce City, Colorado. Funding was provided by the Strong Families Fund, a unique pay-for-success model combined with tax-credit syndication that expands Resident Services. Mercy Housing Mountain Plains is committed to high-quality affordable homes and effective programs that enrich residents’ lives to the highest degree.

ola was homeless for much of her life after escaping an abusive relationship as a teen. She stayed at every shelter in the Denver metro

area. It created a constant struggle in her life, but 11 years ago she found a home through Mercy Housing and her life transformed.

“I kept opening, closing, locking, and unlocking my door when I arrived at my apartment. I couldn’t believe I had a home. I’d dreamed of this all my life,” Lola explained when asked how it felt to get her own place.

Since she uses a wheelchair and is on dialysis, Lola needs access to public transportation. Her apartment is in the heart of Denver, allowing her to easily catch the bus to healthcare facilities. Lola doesn’t just get by, with the access and ease of her residence she’s able to pursue personal growth — something impossible to do while living in a shelter. She’s pursuing her GED, proudly stating that, “I may not be young, but this is important for me, it’s a lifetime goal that I have to take care of.”

She never forgets the pain of homelessness and loves helping others — sharing her passions for crocheting and cooking for those who are homeless every chance she gets. Lola began leaving warm clothes for those who are homeless on a tree in downtown Denver. Her good idea and kind deeds were noticed, and the practice has spread across Denver. Lola continues to try to help in any way possible.

“I just want to help get more young women off the streets, so they won’t have to go through everything that I did. I really like giving back and am looking for ways to give even more.”

Mercy Housing Mountain Plains (MHMP) is a regional office of Mercy Housing, Inc. (MHI), a leading national affordable housing nonprofit that serves tens of thousands of people with low incomes every day. Founded by eight communities of Catholic sisters in 1981, and with operations in 41 states, MHI has 36 years’ experience developing, preserving, managing, and financing affordable housing. MHI’s subsidiaries further the organization’s mission: Mercy Housing Management Group (MHMG) offers professional property management and Mercy Loan Fund (MLF) finances nonprofit organizations.
