BATON ROUGE, LA 3

MERCY’S CAMPAIGN FORMALLY BEGINS TODAY! OUR LADY OF MERCY Catholic Church is proud to announce the inauguration of the Traditions for Tomorrow Capital Campaign. Ais campaign will raise funds for the most pressing elements of our Master Plan.

FIFTY YEARS AGO, Monsignor Frey led a community campaign to raise funds for a new Church Sanctuary. Many of you may also remember the campaign 25 YEARS AGO conducted by Fr. Moroney for a modest expansion of the school. As our community and surrounding area continue to experience positive growth, it is time once again to launch a Capital Campaign to support our growing needs, continuing with the traditions of Our Lady of Mercy’s role as a treasure of Sacramental life and grace.

KEY COMPONENTS of the expansion include a new Gym and Early Childhood Center for our students as well as a new Mercy Ministry OPce. Furthermore, we plan on re-purposing the current oPce space to better accommodate a variety of ministries and for the improved accessibility and safety of our campus. It is an exciting time for our parish family!

OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS, you will receive information about the campaign from the pulpit, through the mail, in the bulletin, at campaign receptions and from your fellow parishioners. We ask that everyone give their fullest attention and cooperation to the eXorts of the campaign.

DURING THIS CAMPAIGN, taking place in the Jubilee Year of Mercy, all parishioners will be asked to oXer their true sacrificial gi[s of stewardship and prayer in order to ensure our success.

All Parishioners will be Invited to a Campaign Reception IN THE COMING WEEKS, every Mercy family will receive an invitation to attend one of a series of campaign receptions. At these receptions, Fr. Cleo and members of the Campaign Committee will be on hand to discuss the various needs of our parish and how we, as a parish family, will address these needs. Ais is your opportunity to learn firsthand about the campaign, ask questions, receive your campaign materials and meet with your fellow parishioners.

BECAUSE THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TIME in the life of our parish community, we ask that all parishioners take the time to attend a reception. Invitations will continue to be mailed over the coming weeks. Please RSVP as soon as possible so that we can plan for your attendance. Aank you! Our Lady of Mercy, pray for us!

THIS IS RECRUITMENT WEEKEND!

As will be explained during Mass, this weekend is Volunteer Recruitment Weekend for the Traditions for Tomorrow Capital Campaign. Over the coming months, we will be reaching out to every parish family to spread the word about the campaign. We need your time and talent to be successful

With a parish of our size, we need many volunteers to assist with phone calls, receptions, visiting fellow parishioners, and preparing mailings. Ke more people we have involved, the easier our task will be! We need your enthusiasm to help get others involved! Do you want to make new friends and help strengthen our parish? Sign up today and simply return the card found in your pew in the oPertory basket or to the oQce as soon as possible!

In Sympathy to the Families of

Remembering Mercy at the Death of a Loved OneAt the death of a loved one, many choose in lieu of flowers to encourage friends and family to make a donation to a special charity or cause. Our Lady of Mercy has nourished the spiritual life of so many parishioners and those throughout the Diocese who come here. A Memorial GiC to our parish and school is a wonderful way to acknowledge the lives of our beloved dead with a giC of loving generosity to the church that has been such a spiritual home. Ms. Deanie Smith can discuss beautiful ways for you to remember your loved one.

Consider adding a planned gi. in your last will and testament to remember Our Lady of Mercy.

CATECHISM CORNER

What is an Indulgence? An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.

An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead.

.e Punishments of Sin

To understand this doctrine and practice of the Church, it is necessary to understand that sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives us of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the privation of which is called the “eternal punishment” of sin. On the other hand every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or aYer death in the state called Purgatory. [is purification frees one from what is called the “temporal punishment” of sin. [ese two punishments

must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin. A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain.
