Vintage race cars in the final turn in front of the grandstands
The weekend began with dinner at the Karl Strauss Brewery in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. Not all of the racing fans joined us for dinner but they were there in the "tent" Sunday morning.

I want to comment that the group was smiling even when the photos were not being taken.
President Michael, David Coomber and the Kruse's arrived bright and early to set up the tents and our MBCA banner. Michael's Limo was loaded with snacks, drinks and other comfort items. Mercedes-Benz automobiles and drivers began arriving later in the morning and continued most of the day. A positive feature of this outing is that one can come and go at will and even come back and enjoy the shade if you want. It was just a short stroll of a few hundred feet to the grandstand to watch the races and then return to the shade of our tent and refresh one's body for the next race.

and rest. Elizabeth is our youngest member with her own name tag. I was completely amazed to see her and her Dad going around looking at cars and even looking under the hood. She seemed quite interested
and was even asking questons. Who knows she may be a Formula One driver some day!

There is a car show on both Saturday and Sunday so one has two chances at winning an award and a victory lap. The show is open to any car and just about every make model and configuration is there including many highly modified automobiles. This is the only active military airfield in the U.S that is shut down for two days every year for vintage car racing and a car show. Who knows how long this will continue. If you have an interest please join us next year.

This is a Sturevant Automobile. Sturevant only built cars from 1904 to 1908. It is difficult to tell what year this
one is but, it has been modified a great deal and has a very early V-8 engine.
A huge plus for the SpeedFest is that the pits are open to the public and one may wander through the pits and talk to the mechanics and drivers. They are very friendly and are open to questons. The majority of the drivers are close to social
security age. The race teams range from a well financed group to just a Mom and Pop operation.
1916 National and a photo of a National that won an Elgin endurane race in Illinois. This national has a 6
cylinder 303 cubic inch engine producing 51 HP and an aluminum body. A NATIONAL WIN THE INDY
500 IN 1912

The Company President, Auther Newby was one of the four founders of the Indy 500 Speedway. A National won
the Indy 500 in 1912 with an average speed of 78.2 MPH and holds the record for the largest engine ever to race
in the Indy 500 with 409 cubic inches. The Mercedes and National race cars share a bit of history in this 1912
race. Ralph De Palama driving a Mercedes led the race for 196 laps when the engine suffered a cracked piston
with 2 laps remaining. De Palama and his riding mechanic pushed the Mercedes across the finish line to finish in
11th! In 1915 De Palama won the Indy 500 driving a 4.5 liter Mercedes Gp

Our fall tour is planned! Sign up now for this gem of an event. The Birch Aquarium, La Jolla is a premier venue in our fine city. Tickets are $18.50 and senior (60+) are $15.50. Birch parking is free.
After enjoying the sea life, we will go down the road a piece to the Kaiserhof located at 2253 Sunset Cliffs Blvd in San Diego where we will have an Oktoberfest lunch. We may order off the menu so no need to send money. The Kaiserhof is located about 10 miles (30 minutes) from the Aquarium. Bring your Mercedes-Benz, your smile and be prepared to enjoy a fine day on the
coast. If you have not been to the Birch Aquarium it is well worth the price of admission, and it is very educational. If you have not been there recently it is time to visit it again and see the new additions.

This is the Sixtieth Anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America and the Fifty-ninth Anniversary of the San
Diego Section. If these two events are not a reason for celebration then we do not know what is. The San Diego
Section is one of the oldest Sections in the MBCA. I think we are the number two or three earliest chartered
sections in MBCA.
We are going to celebrate these significant occasions with lunch it the Bluewater Boat House in Coronado, CA.
The boathouse was built in 1897 as the Boathouse for the Del Coronado Hotel and was converted into a
restaurant several years ago. We will meet up at the boathouse at 11:15 a.m. on November 6, 2016. There is
free parking for over 100 Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
There will be many unique door prizes awarded and a special treat for any new
member that joined us this year. Additionally there will be something special for
anyone that has been a member of the MBCA for over 10 years. This going to be a
great party folks, I kid you not.
Here are the particulars. The menu starters are your choice of New England clam
chowder or Caesar salad. Entrée selections include, a Cheeseburger with all the
trimmings and fries, Tilapia topped with lemon caper sauce, seasoned veggies, and
green rice, Fish and Chips with coleslaw and fries or Panko Shrimp, six large
shrimp, with coleslaw and fries. Dessert is a choice of Bread Pudding with vanilla ice cream or key Lime Pie.
Coffee and ice tea are included.
All this for only $36.00 per person including tax and tip. There is no need to make your menu
selection now. You may do that when you are seated and have your refreshment.
