SUMMARY

Few changes occurred during 1964, and the instruments op-erated with very few interruptions.

Electric power was connected to the Toolangi magneticobservatory, thus creating the opportunity for proper lightingand for the installation of heating in the absolute building.

1. INTRODUCTION

A brief description of the Melbourne Observ-atory Group, as well as the relation between the groupand the Mundaring and Port Moresby Observatories isgiven in the annual report for 1962 (van der Waal, 1966).

Few changes occurred during 1964, and theinstruments have been operating with very fewinterruptions.

Electricity was connected to the magneticobservatory creating the opportunity for proper lightingand for the installation of heating in the absolutebuilding.

Towards the end of the year it was decided thatthe author will remain in charge of Toolangi and theAntarctic observatories when the Geophysical Branch movesto Canberra in 1965. He will be assisted by C.H. vanErkelens, R.G. Toy, and a computing assistant.

Delays in typing have caused long delays inpublishing magnetic and seismic data from Antarcticstations and an effort is being made to bring this up todate. The fact that it will not be necessary to publishannual seismic bulletins from the Antarctic stations infuture will assist in catching up on the back-log.

2. TOOLANGI MAGNETIC OBSERVATORY

Observatory buildings

All observatory buildings were kept in goodorder. They were painted inside and out in March.

The electric wiring of the buildings and theinstallation of thermostatically controlled floor-heatin the absolute house was commenced in February. Somedifficulty was encountered in finding non-magneticfittings but the problem was solved and the lighting wasconnected in July and the power in August. However, thelighting in the absolute hut for illuminating theinstrument scales and circles is unsatisfactory. Thelight is not sufficiently diffused, and the installationof some kind of diffusing material under the light willbe tried.

Instruments

Recording of the D I H I and Z components of thegeomagnetic field with the La Cour variometers wascontinued throughout the year. Control observationswere made every week with the Ruska magnetometer No.4813 for D, three QHMs (Nos. 288, 289, and 290) for H I

and BMZ No. 119 for Z.

Orientation tests on the variograph were carriedout in May. It was not necessary to change the magnetposition, but the H-trace spot was repositioned so thatit will not overlap the baseline trace.

Two proton precession magnetometers were sentto the Antarctic stations at the beginning of the yearand good results were obtained. However, on return, bothinstruments required attention in the workshop, and they

were not ready for use again until the end of the yearwhen they had to go back to the Antarctic stations.

A d.c. power supply for the proton precessionmagnetometer was constructed and tested. It gave someinconsistent results at first, but appeared to be workingall right later. It was not considered reliable enoughto send to the Antarctic stations.

One proton precession magnetometer coil forbacking-off Z was re-designed and re-constructed.

The Askania declinometer that was intended togo to Macquarie Island in March gave inconsistentcomparison results and was not sent. A new T-piece forhanging the magnet on the suspension was ordered butresults were still not satisfactory. Another newdeclinometer was sent in December.

The circuits for obtaining scale values of thevariometer have been unsatisfactory for some time.These circuits are now being re-designed. The controlpanel, ammeter, batteries, and charger will be installedin the store hut and a more accurate meter can then beused without interfering with the magnetic instruments.

The Port Moresby declinometer was received forrepairs.

Instrument comparisons

Instruments used for the standardisation ofAntarctic instruments were compared with Toolangi instru-ments before they were sent down, and again after theirreturn in April. Consistent results were also obtainedwith the proton precession magnetometer.

The Port Moresby declinometer, which wasreceived for repairs, was compared with the Toolangideclinometer but the results were not satisfactory andthe comparisons will have to be repeated.

A set of three QHMs was sent to Port Moresby inOctober to standardise the Port Moresby QHMs. They werecompared with the Toolangi instruments before and afterthis.

Large scatter in the D pier differences occurredwhen doing simultaneous observations. This scatter is asyet unexplained.

Analysis of results

Normal computations of control observations,scaling of K-indices, and extraction of phenomena werecarried out.

The preliminary scale values used during theyear were: for D I 1.17 minutes per millimetre to Juneand 1.16 minutes per millimetre from July; for H I 4.57gammas per millimetre to April and 4.54 gammas per milli-metre from May; and for Z, 4.41 gammas per millimetreto February and 4.39 gammas per millimetre from March.

During 1964, eight observatory years of meanhourly values were scaled. This is two more than thedata produced by all BMR observatories in 1964.Therefore unless the scaling is speeded up it will bemany years before it is up to date. The main causes ofthe low output were scaler breakdowns and staff shortage.Breakdowns occurred throughout the year, although to asomewhat lesser extent towards the end of the year, anda considerable amount of time was lost through this.Constant shortage of staff prevented the full use of thescaler when it was in operating condition. When usedfull time one observatory year can be scaled in tenworking days.

The following observatory years were scaled:Macquarie Island 1957, Mawson 1957 and 1958, Gnangara1958, Toolangi 1959 and 1960, and Port Moresby 1959 and1960.

Punching of hourly mean values from Toolangi1934 to 1937 was completed in March and the automatictyping of this data was completed in May.

During the year the Silliac Computing Centrechanged to 'open shop' and it became necessary forobservatory staff to go to Sydney to complete the out-standing computing. This was done by B.G. Cook and J.C.Branson in September, and most of the outstanding workwas done during this time. Because of this, the reductionand automatic typing of the Watheroo 1948 to 1958 meanhourly values was virtually completed. The reduction andautomatic typing of Macquarie Island 1955 and 1956 wasalso completed. A carbon ribbon put on the typewriterin place of the normal inked ribbon improved the typingconsiderably.

Several years of previous baseline adoptions forAntarctic stations were revised to remove discontinuitiesbetween years.

During the year a large computing system wasinstalled for the CSIRO in Canberra and other capitalcities. In Canberra a CDC 3600 was installed and in eachof the capital cities a CDC 3200 has been or will beinstalled. These computers will be available to the BMR.As the Geophysical Branch is moving to Canberra in 1965the CDC 3600 will be used. To do this, writing of Fortranprogrammes suitable for this equipment was commenced andcertain sub-routines had been successfully tested by theend of the year. The present 5-hole tape used can be readby the new equipment but the output will be in 8-hole tape.Therefore some equipment will have to be modified andsome new equipment has been ordered to enable automatictyping of the output. Programmes will generally be oncards and card punches will also be purchased.

It is proposed to punch all control observationson cards, compute them on electronic computers, and storethe results on magnetic tape. Recomputation, because ofchanges in parameters such as instrument corrections,temperature co-efficients, etc., which is very timeconsuming, can then be done on the computer.

A manual card punch will be purchased for eachobservatory, so that punching of absolute observationscan be kept up to date. In the meantime tables were pre-pared to simplify the QHM computations.

Miscellaneous projects

Dr J. Mainstone, from the University ofQueensland, came to Toolangi in June to repair themagnetic tape pulsation recorder that is installed atthe seismic observatory. Calibration with a rotatingmagnet was attempted but was unsuccessful because ofa fault in the time marking.

The USCGS, co-operating with N.A.S.A.,commenced scaling of magnetograms at 2.5-minute intervalsfor selected periods and observatories. The Toolangiand Antarctic observatories are among the ones asked toco-operate. Microfilm copies of Toolangi magnetogramsare being sent to the USCGS, Washington (World DataCentre A) every month, and those of the Antarcticstations as soon as they are returned and preliminaryparameters have been determined.

Some tabulations of hourly mean values basedon these scalings, in the form of computer print-outs,have been received. The 2.5-minute scalings can also beobtained on magnetic tape; at first it was thought thatby using these, hourly scalings of the magnetogramscould be eliminated, but on closer examination of theproblems involved it was decided that applying correctionsto the tape data, such as changes in baseline values,instrument corrections, etc., would be more work thanhourly scalings and computing with the correct parameters.

Requests

Requests for copies of magnetograms, hourly,monthly, and other magnetic data were received from anumber of local and overseas sources. At the request ofthe Department of Civil Aviation one of their compasstheodolites was calibrated at Toolangi.

3. TOOLANGI SEISMIC OBSERVATORY

Observatory buildings

The seismic observatory buildings were maintainedin good order.

Early in the year evidence of vandalism wasfound around the observatory and it was necessary tosurround the site with a security fence. A chain wirefence was constructed and completed late in the year.

The access road to the seismic site was gradedand some gravel put on in a few places. As expected,this proved insufficient; the gravel was washed out againsoon afterwards.

No information was received from the Departmentof Works about the test hut which was to be constructedduring this year.

When the seismic vault was designed it wasexpected that the exposed concrete south wall would besufficient insulation to prevent daily changes intemperature inside the vault. However, although the wallis not exposed to the sun, daily changes in outside

temperature are conveyed by the concrete, setting upconvection currents inside the vault. These currentscause the long-period seismograph to drift to and fromaking analysis of earthquakes difficult. To solve thisproblem it was proposed to build another wall aroundthe exposed side, leaving a cavity between the walls,thus insulating the vault properly. Funds for thispurpose were put on the 1964-65 estimates and it isexpected that the wall will be constructed in 1965.

Instruments

The following seismographs were operated atToolangi Observatory during the year:

Benioff short-period, N-S, E-W,Z components,

Sprengnether long-period, N-S,E-W components,

Columbia long-period,Z component,

Milne-Shaw long-period,E-W component,

When inspecting the long-period galvanometersuspensions it was found that they were in very badcondition and new suspensions were obtained from themakers in the USA. The bottom suspensions were all rightbut two of the three top suspensions were unusable andmore had to be ordered. The seismograph was calibratedwith the old suspensions and it will be re-calibratedwhen the new ones are fitted.

The present emergency power supply is insuff-icient to keep the seismographs operating during powerfailures. Additional units capable of operating theequipment fully for 11 hours were being planned and shouldbe installed during 1965.

The voltage regulating section of theclock failed in December and for a few days theuncontrolled. During the repair the timing wasfrom the Synchronome pendulum clock, which gaveresults.

A d.c. power supply to operate the Synchronomeclock and the time mark relays was designed.

The proposed vertical seismograph with a visualrecorder (helicorder) was set up in the Melbourne Observ-atory for testing. It was intended that the seismographwould remain at the Melbourne Observatory, while thehelicorder would be installed in the Observatory office,the two being connected by a telephone line (fire alarmline). In order to comply with P.M.G. regulations it wasnecessary to prevent any possibility of high voltagegetting onto the telephone line, and therefore a modulatorand demodulator were constructed in the workshop so thata carrier could be used to transmit seismic signals.This equipment was tested and the drawings submitted tothe P.M.G. for approval. The tests were satisfactory andoral approval was obtained from the P.M.G. by the end of

the year. However, because of the projected move of theGeophysical Branch to Canberra and the uncertainty ofthe future location of the Toolangi Observatory office,it was decided not to continue with the project at present.

When Mr Michel of Lamont Geological Observatoryvisited the Toolangi Observatory in April he suggestedthe installation of the recording micro-barograph whichwas received with the seismograph. However, there is noplace available for the photographic recorder.

Analysis of records

Analysis of all earthquakes for distributionwas continued throughout the year.

The trial period for the automatic handling ofseismic data by the International Seismological Summaryusing mark sense cards from a limited number of stationswas completed. A new organisation; the InternationalSeismological Research Centre, which replaces the I.S.S.,has commenced the project on a permanent basis. AllBureau stations have now been asked to co-operate. Marksense cards can still be used, but the data which can beentered has been extended. However, punch cards can alsobe used and a hand punch has been ordered.

It was noticed during the year that severaltimes seismic data from Toolangi and Antarctic stationswere missing from the USCGS earthquake data reports,apparently because the data were not received in time tobe included. Because of this, much more time thannecessary was required to check earthquake data beforesending them to I.S.R.C. It was therefore decided to sendearthquake data to the USCGS four times per week insteadof twice, as was done before. Since this was done no datahave been missing from the data reports.

The Lamont Observatory has requested the originalseismograms from the long-period instrument and thesewill be sent after analysis and copying on 16-mm film.

Miscellaneous projects

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority isplanning to set up a seismic array in northern Australia.It will consist of two lines of short- period seismometers(dillmore type). The lines are at right angles and crossnear the ends of each. About ten seismometers will beinstalled in each line, extending over about 25 km.

It was suggested that after about two yearsthe establishment might be handed over to the BMR.

In the meantime a U.K.A.E.A. party was inAustralia to do a noise survey of the propOsed sites inthe Northern Territory. and Queensland, and the authorjoined this party for about three weeks in March. Thesites tested were at Tennant Creek, N.T., and near Duchessand Mary Kathleen, Queensland. The site at Tennant Creekappeared to be the most suitable. However, it is under-stood that the authorities May reconsider the siting ofthis installation.

4. ANTARC.TIC OBSERVATORIES

Separate reporta are written about the operationof the Antarctic observatories.

At head office, P.J. Gregson, who was observerat Macquarie Island, and I.E. Black, who was observer atMawson, analysed the observations made at these stationsduring 1963. The seismograms were checked and re-analysedwhen necessary and the results listed for publication.

As the data will be processed by I.S.R.C. oneyear after the event, most of the data from' the Antarcticstations can be punched every year at head office, but atew months will have to be done from telegraphed data afterthese are checked with the UBCGS data reports.

It is pr*psed that I.S.R.C. bulletins will bepublished soon alter'the data are processed'and'it,willtherefore not be 'necessary to publish annual AntaAticbulletins.,

Magnetic phenomena were abstracted and distributed.

High latitude stations have been asked to scalehourly ranges of H and D (Ft-index). An accuracy of tengammas is suggested. It was first intended that themillimetre values should be scaled by hand and punched oncards to be converted on the computer. However, it wasdecided that this scaling could be done at the same timeas the scaling of hourly mean values and, with a suitableprogramme, the data can then be extracted from the tapeand converted on the computer.

The usual ordering and preparation of stores andequipment for the Antarctic observatories was done.Stores for Wilkes 1964 left from Melbourne in January andstores for Mawson 1964 were sent to Fremantle early inFebruary. Stores for Macquarie Island 1965 and Mawson1965 left Melbourne in December.

. 5. DARWIN SEISMOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY

Recording at the temporary seismic station inDarwin with the three-component Willmore seismograph wascontinued throughout the year..

The two recorders' that were in Melbourne forrepairs were returnediA the beginning of the year andhave been operating satisfactorily since then.

Large numbers of earthquakes from a distanceof about 5° have again been recorded.

Some drilling for a suitable foundation for theseismic piers at the Manton Dam site was done early inthe year but this was stopped when funds were exhausted.Later, additional funds were made available and in Decembera site was prepared for further drilling by bulldozing.Drilling was expected to commence again in January 1965.
