Program Outline: Bedford is a Registered Training Organisation. Bedford delivers accredited training and non-accredited training, including distance learning. Program Outline: Provides local learning activities for people over the age of 16. The program focuses on non formal non-accredited learning and the development of foundation skills for those who have difficulty in accessing formal education, training and employment.

Adult Community Education Program (ACE)

Organisation running the program: Christies Beach High School and Southern Vocational College

Program Outline: Subjects leading towards SACE Certificates at years 11 & 12; A number of VET certificates; An adults only SACE completion program (SAIL); and a large number of subjects at bridging level which can help students reconnect with education and learn valuable skills to enhance their employment prospects and life skills.

Location of program: Christies Beach High School

Maximum participants: Depends on the subject chosen

Cost Involved: School Card Scheme. Those not covered by School Card will pay about $33 per semester per subject as well as any material costs for such things as timber if they are doing the Furniture Construction course.

Education Minimum: No special requirements. The Adult Manager will discuss each student’s circumstance on enrolment and work with them to choose an appropriate course at an appropriate level.

Organisation running the program: DECS (Department of Education and Children’s Services)

Program Outline: Alternative education settings for students who are unable to access mainstream education settings for a variety of reasons. Small classes, negotiated curriculum and some SACE/VET pathways are offered. Bowden Brompton Community School (BBCS) is a South Australian DECS Community School working with students who have been unable to effectively access education in traditional schools. The majority of students have experienced significant trauma issues in their lives. Trauma refers to complex family breakdown issues, mental health issues, as well as welfare, social and juvenile justice complexities in student lives. Our students are ‘at risk’ of not completing their schooling and engagement and retention of students is therefore of major importance. BBCS students are dealing with complexities in their lives that alienate them from or engagement with traditional mainstream schooling models.

Bowden Brompton Community School

Organisation running the program: Community Partnerships @ Work Inc

Program Outline: Can the Can is a restorative justice initiative for young offenders involved in illegal graffiti, in partnership with SAPOL and local businesses. Can the Can utilises students’ interests in aerosol art as a medium to engage them to develop a range of skills relevant to learning. In addition to learning aerosol art techniques and principles of design, the 20 session program will also focus on building social skills, a sense of belonging and self-esteem through a community service project (Community murals).

Career Development Service

Organisation running the program: Southern Adelaide South Australia Works is supporting a Career Development Service for residents of the Cities of Holdfast Bay, Marion, Mitcham and Onkaparinga in 2010 and possibly extending to 2011.

Program Outline: Fantastic opportunity for people who have no idea of what career they wish to get into - or for those needing help to develop a career pathway or develop job search skills.

Location of program: Arranged with Career Development Service provider

Maximum participants: Ongoing intake

Age Range: 17 – 64 years

Cost Involved: This service is free for participants who meet the eligibility criteria above. The CDS provides funding for provision of the required services/support to one of 10 approved Career Development Service Brokers listed below. Over 40 years DOME; All ages SA Career Consultants, Cream of the Crop, Vector Consultants, Perfect Pathways, Ability Edge Education, Careers with Spirit, People Magic, Positive Goals and Solutions, Halsley Consulting.

Organisation running the program: Industry Initiatives

Program Outline: CareerStart SA offers opportunities for young people to apply for traineeships, cadetships and apprenticeships in the South Australian State Public Sector.

Location of program: Level 4, 11-29 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

Maximum participants: The program offers over 600 placements in public sector agencies.

Age Range: For mainstream applicants the age range is Traineeships 17-24, Cadetships 17-24 years, no age requirements for apprenticeships. Please contact us for further eligibility criteria.

For the following target groups Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, person with a declared disability, person who is or has been under state care, long term unemployed (12 months or more), person with status of migrant or refugee, parent returning to work (after 2 years out of the workforce) and mature age (40+) applicants the age range is Traineeships 17-28, Cadetships and Apprenticeships have no age requirements.

Program Outline: This program aims to break down barriers between younger and older people that are often based on inaccurate or fearful stereotypes and also has a focus on crime prevention. Delivery is over 10 sessions and covers: SAPOL crime prevention programs, Police and the community, victim awareness, criminal behaviour and community impact, team work, communication and problem solving skills, community project and crime prevention strategies.

Organisation running the program: Fusion Australia

Program Outline: The program in 2010 is about connecting young people through car maintenance/mechanics, computer building, hair and beauty (girls), inter personal relationships and work experience (SACE accredited). They will work with trades people, youth workers and employers in such a way that they learn from one another & grow to appreciate each other.

Goals: Helping year 8 to 10 students discover their vocation and interests, Preparing students for work with development of personal, team, safety and work skill, increasing their connection with mainstream education

Location of program: 2010 we are using facilities at Reynella East High School

Maximum participants: 4 - 6 students per class

Age Range: Years 8 – 10

Cost Involved: $50 per day per student for a semester

Days Involved: Wednesday girls program; Thursdays boys program

Duration: Semester 1 and 2 each year. 9am til 2.30 pm per day.

Length of Funding: We do not have funding. Students pay part of the costs, the other is covered by donations and fund raising.

Program Outline: This is an innovative and highly engaging program that provides young people with positive learning experiences while creating their own skate board. Create a Sk8 aims to provide young people with skills in goal setting, planning a project, the practical use of maths and art and an understanding of the benefits of physical activity. All students leave the program with a skate board and helmet.

Location of program: This program is available state wide; however travel expenses would need to be included for rural areas.

Program Outline: Case management support with training in getting your Learners, White card (OH&S for Building sites), Senior 1st Aid, Cert 1 Vocational Preparation. Working with other service providers to offer Real Skills which is a life skills program incorporating cooking, cleaning, rental training, life/career coaching, mini makeover, resumes, interviews skills, networking and support etc (see Real Skills entry).

Location of program: Fleurieu Peninsula (Yankalilla, Victor Harbor and Goolwa)


Age Range: 15 - 24

Cost Involved: To be eligible a young person cannot be working or studying fulltime. There is a small fee charged for training if working/studying or with another service provider.

Creating a Better Tomorrow

Program Outline: Fun, interactive workshops will focus on well being, respect and empowerment to make positive choices during this time of change for students and their families. The students will be supported by Aboriginal staff from the regional office, primary school staff and most importantly, the Year 8 mentors, teachers and ACEOs from participating high schools. A range of guest speakers including Aboriginal community members will also participate.

students to get involved in a series of half-day workshops about being prepared for a solid start to high school. The workshops will provide extra opportunities for students to celebrate where they are at right now and to get ready for change.

Organisation running the program: Multiple Solutions

Program Outline: Multiple Solutions offers programs designed to help make looking for work and keeping your job easier. We offer a range of services including: resume development, job search support and skill development, career planning, access to training, volunteer work and work experience and ongoing support in the workplace.

Location of program: Brighton, Christies Beach, Glenside, Mount Barker, Woodville, Elizabeth and Modbury

Age Range: 15 - 65

Days Involved: Monday – Friday 9-5 (Business Hours)

Duration: The program duration varies for each participant depending on their needs.

Education Minimum: Multiple Solutions accept participants with any level of education

Length of Funding: Job Seekers are funded for up to 18 months to find work. The program will be reviewed at 18 months and can be extended for another 6 months through a program review process. The program can also be extended to provide ongoing support once the participant is employed.

How will this program support young people transition to further education, employment and/or training Multiple Solutions assists young people with a smooth

transition from school into the workforce and or further training by allowing students to register with Multiple Solutions while they are still at school.

FAME

Organisation running the program: Christian Brothers Oceania Province

Program Outline: FAME works to re engage each young person with education and learning, on a pathway towards re integration with mainstream education or entry to vocational training and employment. FAME works with disengaged youth and those at risk of disengagement to develop an effective learning environment that includes independent learning plans for each student. The format is flexible and geared to the specific social and educational needs of the young person. All education is accredited through partnerships with DECS, The Catholic Education Office, Christie Beach High School and Open Access College. For young people who have engaged in an independent Learning Plan and are turning 16, FAME also runs a program called Open Access Kids(OAKS) that supports maximum flexibility in a ‘mentored open access’ format. This supported individual learning can take the student to full Year 12 standing with certification by FAME and Open Access College.

Holiday Recreation Programs


Program Outline: Re-Engage can tailor recreation and engagement programs to be held over school holidays, which are identified as one of the higher risk times for young people to engage in destructive activities. All programs are planned in partnership with the participants and are based on the interests of the group, for example: aerosol art workshop, skate-boarding, movie days, fishing trips, ten pin bowling, ‘come and try’ sports days, mini master chef, op shop tours …. Participants are involved in making group lunches that consist of healthy food choices.

Program Outline: ICAN stands for: Innovative Community Action Networks

Flexible Learning Options (FLO): Overview: To provide intensive learning and personal case management for secondary aged young people (12-19yo) disengaged from schooling, to get them back into learning so as to attain their SACE or Certificate II and make a successful transition to further education, training & employment. Approach: This model is based on a case management approach working with schools to develop an individualised Flexible Learning Plan for the young person. Programs may also be funded through targeting groups of FLO enrolled young people. Funding: $6,810/yr Generated through a FLO enrolment. Critical dates: Term:1 DECS staffing Census date

Primary School Enrolment: Overview: To provide intensive school based learning and personal case management support for disengaged children in Year 6 and 7 so that they are better engaged in learning and make successful transitions into Year 8. Priority will be given to Commonwealth NP PS schools. Approach: This model is based on a case management approach, working with schools, family and other agencies to develop an individual learning program for the young person. The key in this model is to support the development a pattern of engagement and attendance. Keep Safe Stay Cool

Organisation running the program: Southern Primary Health (Noarlunga) – Noarlunga Health Village

Program Outline: Keep Safe Stay Cool (KSSC) is a peer education/community development project which works with young people to prevent Domestic Violence and promote Healthy Relationships. Every year KSSC trains young people (aged 14- 23yrs) to become peer educators who, with the support of a health worker, go into school classes to educate young people on Domestic Violence, Gender Roles, Human Rights and Healthy Relationships. Year 11 students can obtain 2 SACE units by participating in the program as a community studies option. Young people from the wider community are welcome and eligible to apply.

Location of program: Noarlunga Health Village

Maximum participants: KSSC aims to recruit approximately 10 new peer educators each year. Young people are encouraged to stay in the program longer than 1 yr.


Cost Involved: No. After the 1st year of training & presenting is complete, peer educators are offered a small financial reimbursement.

Days Involved: Training Thursdays 4-8 pm. Once training is completed young people are expected to attend fortnightly planning meetings after school hrs. Peer education sessions are run during school hours.

The workshops won’t replace transition days usually run by each high school, but will provide extra opportunities for students to celebrate where they are at right now and to get ready for change. Fun, interactive workshops will focus on well being, respect and empowerment to make positive choices during this time of change for students and their families.

In South Australia the NDCO Program is delivered in partnership with the University of South Australia and TAFE SA Adelaide South

Program Outline: The National Disability Coordination Officer (NDCO) Program assists people with disabilities, learning difficulties, medical conditions and mental health issues to transition from school and the community to training, VET, TAFE and University and from there to employment.

The NDCO can provide information, coordination and referrals to individuals with a disability, and their parents and associates, and link them with appropriate local service providers and support services. The NDCO can also assist service providers such as schools, training providers, employment brokers and employers by providing information, resources and establishing links between service providers that assists in provision of better services for people with disabilities. Activities that raise awareness of the barriers people with disabilities face in education, training and community life can be provided as can professional development.

Program Outline: Young people at risk of being likely to exit education within six months would benefit from this 1 to 1 career development support. Each young person will have 3 initial sessions and ongoing support for up to 6 months (depending on needs). The program is delivered by an accredited Career Development practitioner, experienced in working with this cohort. Program includes: Career Assessment (ACER), Life & Career Coaching, Individual Learning Plan, Transition Plan, resume writing, phone techniques, job search, interview skills, personal grooming, work experience preparation and placement, job mentoring.

Organisation running the program: Quality LinCS

Program Outline: Quality LinCS manages and coordinates with public and private Registered Training Organisation (RTO’s) over 50 part time, partial and full certificate courses for students in the region.

Location of program: A variety of locations – usually hosted on site with the appropriate RTO.

Maximum participants: Varies depending on each course.

Age Range: 15+, but younger students can be negotiated.

Cost Involved: Most courses have a cost attached to them; price is dependant on the course chosen.

Days Involved: Most courses operate one day per week, the day varies. There are a few short courses offered.

Duration: Most programs are delivered over 1 or 2 Semesters. Short courses are usually 1 week in length.

Education Minimum: Some programs are only directed at Year 11 and 12 students whilst the majority are available to all Year levels.

SCAEP

Organisation running the program: SAIL (Southern Alliance Innovation Learning) Consortium – 6 Southern Secondary Schools with Wirreanda High School as the lead school in collaboration with Mission Australia – Learning Unlimited.

Program Outline: SCAEP is an alternative education program for young people who are disengaged from mainstream school. The program offers a flexible approach to learning through the collaborative development of Individualized Learning Plans which focus on meeting the specific needs and interests of the participants. The primary aim of SCAEP is to motivate young people to re-engage in education through the provision of accredited individual and group learning opportunities that focus on literacy, numeracy, vocational education and life skills, including personal development and recreational activities.

Program Outline: Bedford offers a school to work transition programme where students can enter the work environment for a short period to assist them in determining their vocational future. Students will gain experience in job application, interview skills and working with others. Bedford can offer work experience in a wide variety of vocations such as Hospitality, Horticulture, Furniture, Cleaning and Packaging and Light Assembly. During the work experience placement, students are given the opportunity to gain employment in the department of their choice, while continuing to finish their schooling.

Location of program: Bedford offers work experience placements at all metropolitan and regional SA funded outlets (Panorama, Lonsdale, Pooraka, Pt Pirie, Kadina, Mt Gambier, Millicent, and Pt Lincoln).

Maximum participants: Numbers of students are negotiated with each specific department.

Age Range: Students must be enrolled in school, however the minimum age to work and be trained at Bedford is 16 years.

Cost Involved: No cost, however students may have to provide their own safety boots

Program Outline: SORT offers an intensive case management service for young people who are disengaged from the education system and are having difficulty staying at school home. Caseworkers assist clients to remain in school, find alternative education or training, address self esteem, confidence, bullying, mental health, learning, and family issues and assists to increase their involvement in the community.

Program Outline: This program aims to empower students to have the skills, ability and confidence to advocate for themselves and others to gain positive outcomes for all involved. Program Outline: Target Work is a practical skills training program based on construction projects for students and youth with a career focus on trades including, brick paving, bricklaying, carpentry, metal work, landscaping & irrigation.

Program Outline: Vocational Training Courses and “Short Courses” are intended for students who may want to follow certain vocational pathways and find that their school doesn’t cater for this, or they want to increase their exposure to training in specific vocational areas. Program Outline: CP@W is licensed to deliver and support young people using a range of Career Assessment tools and programs, for example; ACER Self Directed Search (SDS). SDS is an ideal resource for individuals at risk who have not been able or willing to focus on investigation of career pathways.

Program Outline: Programs will be offered at Onkaparinga Youth Services – Aldinga for 8-18 year olds focussing on Recreation, Arts and Culture. There will also be a reference group for the centre which young people can participate in and have a say about types of programs are offered.

There are a number of rooms which are available to hire to organisations as well as private users. These range from a fully equipped workshop, a group room and a meeting/counselling room.

Organisation running the program: Wirreanda High School

Program Outline: A full time program designed to assist young people, disconnected from mainstream schooling, to engage with a flexible curriculum suited to individuals through a Flexible Learning Plan (FLP). The program aims to deliver accredited training, personal development programs and employment assistance, as well as assist students to complete units of SACE Stage 1 & in some cases Stage 2.

Program Outline: This program is delivered in a workshop and is project based where participants select a piece of furniture to complete during the program. They will learn a range of skills in working with wood and to use a range of hand tools, and will learn employability skills such as communication, team work, problem solving, planning & organising and self management. The program’s sessions are designed to motivate and develop self-esteem, increase engagement in meaningful learning and develop social skills. Workshops will be delivered by a qualified Carpenter and Youthworker.

Young Mums C.A.F.F.E

Organisation running the program: Southern Fleurieu Health Service

Program Outline: The project is directed at improving the health, self esteem, parenting capacity, employability/economic status, and personal growth potential of pregnant or parenting young women living in the Southern Fleurieu region, within a framework of comprehensive health, educational, social and community services.

The project is thus focussed on 2 major issues – young women, employment, and working life; as well as young women dealing with the issues of pregnancy and parenting at a young age and the problems associated with these.

Location of program: Based in Victor Harbor, but service the Southern Fleurieu region.

Youth Connections

Organisation running the program: WORKSKIL Inc

Program Outline: Youth Connections aims to provide assistance to young people who may be having difficulty reaching their full potential. Assistance is provided on a one-to one basis and group work is also available. Participants are at risk of not successfully completing year 12 or transitioning to further education or training options. Service includes Assess the needs and develop a plan of action to achieve goals. Be available for support, guidance and encouragement. Refer, coordinate and advocate with other appropriate services within the community on their behalf. Provide information about appropriate options that are tailored to individual needs like: general and specialist counselling services, personal development courses, education and training options. Support with referrals or applications, or suggest other possible solutions, if facing a short term crisis. Advocate or liaise with other services in regards to needs, or school in regards to education.

Also offer regular fun, youth focused events and activities available to all disengaged 13-19year olds in the Fleurieu region. Offer drop-in and visiting services access at our Youth Centre centrally located in Victor Harbor next door to Employment Options office.
