Program Outline: Provides local learning activities for people over the age of 16. The program focuses on non formal non-accredited learning and the development of foundation skills for those who have difficulty in accessing formal education, training and employment.

Organisation running the program: Christies Beach High School and Southern Vocational College

Program Outline: Subjects leading towards SACE Certificates at years 11 & 12; A number of VET certificates; An adults only SACE completion program (SAIL); and a large number of subjects at bridging level which can help students reconnect with education and learn valuable skills to enhance their employment prospects and life skills.

Location of program: Christies Beach High School

Maximum participants: Depends on the subject chosen

Age Range: 16+

Cost Involved: School Card Scheme. Those not covered by School Card will pay about $33 per semester per subject as well as any material costs for such things as timber if they are doing the Furniture Construction course.

Days Involved: Monday to Friday

Duration: Most subjects last for a semester but can be continued for a full year

Education Minimum: No special requirements. The Adult Manager will discuss each student’s circumstance on enrolment and work with them to choose an appropriate course at an appropriate level.

Organisation running the program: DECS (Department of Education and Children’s Services)

Program Outline: Alternative education settings for students who are unable to access mainstream education settings for a variety of reasons. Small classes, negotiated curriculum and some SACE/VET pathways are offered. Bowden Brompton Community School (BBCS) is a South Australian DECS Community School working with students who have been unable to effectively access education in traditional schools. The majority of students have experienced significant trauma issues in their lives. Trauma refers to complex family breakdown issues, mental health issues, as well as welfare, social and juvenile justice complexities in student lives. Our students are ‘at risk’ of not completing their schooling and engagement and retention of students is therefore of major importance. BBCS students are dealing with complexities in their lives that alienate them from or engagement with traditional mainstream schooling models.

Program Outline: Can the Can is a restorative justice initiative for young offenders involved in illegal graffiti, in partnership with SAPOL and local businesses. Can the Can utilises students’ interests in aerosol art as a medium to engage them to develop a range of skills relevant to learning. In addition to learning aerosol art techniques and principles of design, the 20 session program will also focus on building social skills, a sense of belonging and self-esteem through a community service project (Community murals).

Career Development Service

Organisation running the program: Southern Adelaide South Australia Works is supporting a Career Development Service for residents of the Cities of Holdfast Bay, Marion, Mitcham and Onkaparinga in 2010 and possibly extending to 2011.

Program Outline: Fantastic opportunity for people who have no idea of what career they wish to get into - or for those needing help to develop a career pathway or develop job search skills.

Location of program: Arranged with Career Development Service provider

Maximum participants: Ongoing intake

Age Range: 17 – 64 years

Cost Involved: This service is free for participants who meet the eligibility criteria above. The CDS provides funding for provision of the required services/support to one of 10 approved Career Development Service Brokers listed below. Over 40 years DOME; All ages SA Career Consultants, Cream of the Crop, Vector Consultants, Perfect Pathways, Ability Edge Education, Careers with Spirit, People Magic, Positive Goals and Solutions, Halsley Consulting.

Days Involved: As required for each individual.

CareerStart SA

Organisation running the program: Industry Initiatives

Program Outline: CareerStart SA offers opportunities for young people to apply for traineeships, cadetships and apprenticeships in the South Australian State Public Sector.

Location of program: Level 4, 11-29 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

Maximum participants: The program offers over 600 placements in public sector agencies.

Age Range: For mainstream applicants the age range is Traineeships 17-24, Cadetships 17-24 years, no age requirements for apprenticeships. Please contact us for further eligibility criteria.

For the following target groups Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, person with a declared disability, person who is or has been under state care, long term unemployed (12 months or more), person with status of migrant or refugee, parent returning to work (after 2 years out of the workforce) and mature age (40+) applicants the age range is Traineeships 17-28, Cadetships and Apprenticeships have no age requirements.

Program Outline: This program aims to break down barriers between younger and older people that are often based on inaccurate or fearful stereotypes and also has a focus on crime prevention. Delivery is over 10 sessions and covers: SAPOL crime prevention programs, Police and the community, victim awareness, criminal behaviour and community impact, team work, communication and problem solving skills, community project and crime prevention strategies.

Program Outline: The program in 2010 is about connecting young people through car maintenance/mechanics, computer building, hair and beauty (girls), inter personal relationships and work experience (SACE accredited). They will work with trades people, youth workers and employers in such a way that they learn from one another & grow to appreciate each other.

Goals: Helping year 8 to 10 students discover their vocation and interests, Preparing students for work with development of personal, team, safety and work skill, increasing their connection with mainstream education

Location of program: 2010 we are using facilities at Reynella East High School

FAME

Organisation running the program: Christian Brothers Oceania Province

Program Outline: FAME works to re engage each young person with education and learning, on a pathway towards re integration with mainstream education or entry to vocational training and employment. FAME works with disengaged youth and those at risk of disengagement to develop an effective learning environment that includes independent learning plans for each student. The format is flexible and geared to the specific social and educational needs of the young person. All education is accredited through partnerships with DECS, The Catholic Education Office, Christie Beach High School and Open Access College. For young people who have engaged in an independent Learning Plan and are turning 16, FAME also runs a program called Open Access Kids(OAKS) that supports maximum flexibility in a ‘mentored open access’ format. This supported individual learning can take the student to full Year 12 standing with certification by FAME and Open Access College.

Program Outline: ICAN stands for: Innovative Community Action Networks

Flexible Learning Options (FLO): Overview: To provide intensive learning and personal case management for secondary aged young people (12-19yo) disengaged from schooling, to get them back into learning so as to attain their SACE or Certificate II and make a successful transition to further education, training & employment. Approach: This model is based on a case management approach working with schools to develop an individualised Flexible Learning Plan for the young person. Keep Safe Stay Cool

Organisation running the program: Southern Primary Health (Noarlunga) – Noarlunga Health Village

Program Outline: Keep Safe Stay Cool (KSSC) is a peer education/community development project which works with young people to prevent Domestic Violence and promote Healthy Relationships. Every year KSSC trains young people (aged 14- 23yrs) to become peer educators who, with the support of a health worker, go into school classes to educate young people on Domestic Violence, Gender Roles, Human Rights and Healthy Relationships. Year 11 students can obtain 2 SACE units by participating in the program as a community studies option. Young people from the wider community are welcome and eligible to apply.

Location of program: Noarlunga Health Village

Maximum participants: KSSC aims to recruit approximately 10 new peer educators each year. Young people are encouraged to stay in the program longer than 1 yr.

Cost Involved: No. After the 1st year of training & presenting is complete, peer educators are offered a small financial reimbursement.

Program Outline: The National Disability Coordination Officer (NDCO) Program assists people with disabilities, learning difficulties, medical conditions and mental health issues to transition from school and the community to training, VET, TAFE and University and from there to employment.

The NDCO can provide information, coordination and referrals to individuals with a disability, and their parents and associates, and link them with appropriate local service providers and support services. The NDCO can also assist service providers such as schools, training providers, employment brokers and employers by providing information, resources and establishing links between service providers that assists in provision of better services for people with disabilities. Activities that raise awareness of the barriers people with disabilities face in education, training and community life can be provided as can professional development.

Program Outline: Bedford offers a school to work transition programme where students can enter the work environment for a short period to assist them in determining their vocational future. Students will gain experience in job application, interview skills and working with others. Bedford can offer work experience in a wide variety of vocations such as Hospitality, Horticulture, Furniture, Cleaning and Packaging and Light Assembly. During the work experience placement, students are given the opportunity to gain employment in the department of their choice, while continuing to finish their schooling.

Location of program: Bedford offers work experience placements at all metropolitan and regional SA funded outlets (Panorama, Lonsdale, Pooraka, Pt Pirie, Kadina, Mt Gambier, Millicent, and Pt Lincoln).
