MENTOR TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES

MEETING WITH THE STUDENT Proper orientation and preparation will make this conference a meaningful experience for both company and student.

Please cover: Job Skills Handbook: How to use it. This handbook covers resume writing, cover letters, interview

questions, reasons for rejection, making an impression, dress, manners, attitude and the job application. Included are examples of resumes, cover letters, and follow up letters. They are organized in a manner that provides an easy template for the student to follow.

Portfolios: Approve all student interview/portfolio materials in advance. (*Very important) Dress and Behavior: Discuss proper dress and behavior at the conference Professional Expectation: Discuss the expectations the employer will have of the student Career Conference Overview: Give an overview of the conference to give students vision and

perspective Company Materials: Discuss that materials will be available and how they can help the student

make contact with a potential employers after the fair Interviews:

Discuss the proper approach, greeting, and bringing closure with the interviewer Role-play an interview with the student in advance to enhance the conference experience and to

build confidence Speaker Sessions: Discuss how students will be expected to attend them when not interviewing Follow-up Letters:

This is a requirement for each company a student interviewed with and what information is needed to complete this task.

today’s workforce

CAREER CONFERENCE OVERVIEW Students will have registration packets containing their career conference materials the morning of

the conference. Students will proceed to the chapel where they will be given instructions and explanation on the

passport. This year we are expecting approximately 40 companies to participate and each will have 8

interview time slots. Students will have the opportunity for additional interviews with companies of their choice.

Each student will be scheduled to interview once. Students are encouraged to schedule additional interviews with companies of their choice; this is also a requirement to complete the passport.

Each student is to come prepared with resume and materials for at least two interviews. The interview session times will be 20 minutes in length. Students should check in with the company for their interview ten minutes prior to their scheduled

time. *Please impress upon the student the importance of this check in and the completion of their scheduled interviews.

Students will receive a stamp in their passport for completion of each interview.

Companies will provide a table with a combination of employment, company, and industry materials.

Students will be expected to visit at least 20 of the business tables and encouraged to visit more. Students will receive a stamp in their passport for each table they politely and professionally visit. There will be 3 motivational speakers with 4 sessions each. Students are expected to attend 2 out of

3 speakers. Students will receive a stamp in their passport for attending each of the 2 speakers sessions

assigned to them. The last 1 ½ hour is a wrap up session with a keynote speaker, door prizes, and lunch. As students enter the closing session they will turn in their passports to their Mentor Teachers for a

drawing and attendance purposes. *Only completed passports will be eligible for the drawing prizes.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION AND EXPECTATIONS Interviews: Each student will interview at least once. Students may schedule additional interviews

if they wish with companies who have additional openings. Speaker Sessions: Students are required to attend the two speaker sessions that they are assigned

to. Company Booths: Students will visit at least 20 fair booths during the career fair. They are

expected to be polite and wait their turn to ask questions of the employers at the booths they visit. Keynote Speaker: There will be a 20-minute keynote session at the beginning of the conference to

motivate students to participate. There will be a short keynote speaker at the wrap up session at the end of the career conference.

Passport to Your Future: Students are expected to complete and turn in his or her career conference passport. Completed passports will qualify students for drawing prizes. Students will need to have several areas stamped in their passport:

1 stamp for the interview session 1 bonus stamp for an additional interview 20 stamps for booth visits 2 stamps for the 2 assigned speaker sessions 1 stamp for completing the on-site evaluation

Closing Speaker: There will be a 20-minute keynote session at the end of the conference to wrap up what students have learned. During this time students will:

Receive final instructions Participate in a drawing for prizes Receive a lunch Prepare to catch their buses back to their home school

STUDENT INTERVIEW PREPARATION (Refer to the “Interview Preparation Worksheet” in the Student Preparation Packet)

A professional portfolio for the interview should include: Portfolio cover Generic prepared cover letter Please review each letter to see that it contains the proper and appropriate information, and correct

information Resume Career Conference teacher evaluations from two teachers of their choice. A copy of the student’s transcript. Any certificates and awards may be copied and included (optional). Letters of recommendation from the community (optional). A reference sheet (each student should have a separate sheet in their portfolio that includes three

references. To be complete, a reference should include: Name with correct spelling Proper title

Complete address that includes city, state, and zip code Phone number with area code E-mail address (optional but helpful)

MENTOR EXPECTATIONS PRIOR TO THE CAREER CONFERENCE To ensure that the student: Has a clear vision of the conference and what is expected of them Understands the bus schedule and timelines Portfolios are prepared and approved Questions are answered Understands how and where to pick up materials Knows their interview times

MENTOR EXPECTATIONS DURING THE CAREER CONFERENCE? Attend the conference for the day Check in your students when they get on the bus and to give them their packet Report your student attendance to Kendra Schadel at the Center Booth upon arrival from 7:50 a.m.

– 8:00 a.m. Ensure student have a clear understanding of expectations, timelines, and what they need to bring Provide supervision for areas during the day. Please sit with your students at the opening and

closing sessions. Advise the student when and where you will be located so they can find you during the day. Supervise all students by roaming throughout the building.

MENTOR EXPECTATIONS AFTER THE CAREER CONFERENCE To review the interview evaluation sheets with the student and provide feedback. Assistance with student follow-up letters. Letters should be turned in no later than March 30, 2013.

You should approve them before they are mailed. Students should provide the appropriate envelopes already typed.

Again this year, the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce will partner with high schools from the Auburn, Enumclaw and Kent school districts to present the Greater Auburn Community Career Conference on Tuesday, March 27, 2013. This event will be held at Emerald Downs in Auburn.

The Career Conference is designed for junior and senior students. This year the Career Conference will host 300 students from the three local school districts. It is an honor to participate in this event. I have your student in my class and believe it will be a valuable experience. The students will receive the following benefits from participation:

Prior to the Career Conference, students will work with their faculty mentor on such things as proper dress and behavior, cover letters and resumes as well as follow-up letters, interviewing techniques and questions to ask of the employer. The faculty mentor will help prepare students to get the most out of the day.

The Career Conference is well planned to maximize student exposure to careers and development opportunities. The day will include:

50 business fair booths where students can meet with representatives and receive company information Students interviews with two companies Keynote speakers Motivational speakers
