    Mentoring and Ministry

    Daniel Medina

    Summer, 2012

    Introduction

Outside of my time of family and work I serve and volunteer as the Youth Pastor atTrue Vine Pentecostal Church. Our church is currently in its 7thyear and we aretransitioning from Home Missions status to a Matured Church status. What this meansis that our church has been around longer than 6 years and has demonstrated continualgrowth. I have been serving the youth for the last 6 years and I am very passionate about

leading them into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ through the power of the HolyGhost. My role within the youth group is to minister the Word of God, lead them inevangelism and create events that build Christian fellowship. When my wife Kristina and Ifirst began we had about 6 youth and now we have around 20; needless to say the youthgroup is expanding and growing. We have seen youth come and go but our main goal is tosee them grow and be spiritually transformed. The challenge my wife Kristina and I nowface is how to make time for work, family and other things while meeting the needs ofevery young person effectively. With that in mind I would like to utilize the older youth thatwe have, who are in their College and Career years and create a youth board that wouldhandle some of the responsibilities that my wife and I are currently in charge of. This wouldbe done for 4 main reasons:

To delegate more responsibility to those youth who want to get involved byteaching them to serve based upon Biblical principles found in Matthew 20:25-28.

This would allow me to focus on some of the greater aspects of ministry.

To propel youth from a place of being ministered to, into a place of active ministry.

Allow for older youth to mentor and serve the younger age youth that we have.

This change has been on my mind for the last 5 months or so and I have been putting it offbut I feel that its the right time to get it done. It is crucial for this innovation to take place in

order for greater growth to take place in the ministry and to equip the youth to serve(Jordan, 2006 p. 38).

    Planned Intervention

As I previously stated I would like to create a youth board that is made up of 4 youth. Theyouth I have in mind have the basic Biblical knowledge and understanding down prettywell. What I plan to do is bring them all together and begin with the persuasion anddecision steps in the diffusion process in order to gauge how each feel about the board and

whether they would like to join. The meeting will simply determine which youth will forma positive or negative impression of the innovation (Surry & Eli, 2001). This wouldcommunicate to me how each youth feels about being a part of the board and to see if theysupport their role within it. During the end of the meeting each youth will need to make adecision to adopt or reject the innovation (Surry & Eli, 2001) of the youth board. During

the persuasion and decision meeting I will introduce what role and responsibility I wouldlike each youth to actively perform in the ministry. They are as follows:

Two youth responsible for leading worship during every youth service. This also

includes multimedia that is used. (Melanie and Daniel)

One youth to take over and coordinate youth events and activities. (Will)

One youth to take over and coordinate fundraising efforts. (Elizabeth)

The youth board will actively minister and serve other youth as well by taking anotheryouth assigned to them and personally mentoring them. The youth board members will

also be a voting body in which every member will get to vote about important issues thatimpact the youth group. Important issues include how fundraising money is spent, whereand when to take youth retreats, adding any new board members and what events toattend within the Colorado District.

If all the youth make the decision to join the youth board then we will move ahead andbegin to implement process of the board. Well will then try it out for a while to see howeveryone fits in their role and how it positively impacts the other youth. After a trial periodof 2 months the youth board members will either confirm their role or decide to resign. Ifany decides the role is not right for them the board will vote to add a new member.

Since we have youth service every Thursday night we will meet as a youth board afterwardduring the following dates. I will guide each meeting and evaluate the progress of the youthboard by gauging each members level of commitment through discussions. Meetings willalso serve as time for any issues or ideas to be discussed.

    Evaluation

To evaluate the success of the youth board I used several indicators that allow me todetermine whether the innovation of the youth board is having a positive impact.

    Worship

    Team/Media

o Songs and media must be aligned to the core values of ourorganization.

o Creativity needs to evident in an effort to get all youth involved in away that increases interaction between youth. An example would besome form of an icebreaker.

    o

Media created and songs chosen then presented for approval. Thiscould be done formally and informally.

Events o Events are planned in a way that ensures Biblical standards are notcompromised in any way.

o New events are planned consistently and presented for approval on aweekly basis. Events are planned on a three month calendar.

o Events are planned to create unity and Christian fellowship.o After approval, events are to be placed in the church bulletin with all

of the essential information for parents.Fundraising: o Fundraising efforts initiated without my assistance.

o At least one monthly fundraiser takes place and is announced to

youth and parents two weeks in advance in the church bulletin.o Creativity must be evident in an effort to get youth and parents

    involved.

    Mentoring

Aspecto Youth board member actively reaches out the youth they are

ministering to them in order to try and build a sense of unity, fellowship and trust.

o Frequent contact maintained between mentor and youth. Could bedone through a phone call, email, Facebook. Church time will be

utilized as well.o Board member should try and take time out of their schedule to

spend time with the youth they are mentoring, at least once a month.o

Board member should address any questions about the Bible, as wellas taking time to help lead them in prayer during service.

    Findings

The creation of the youth board is having some good results but there have beensome unexpected problems that have hindered its progress. On the positive front, ourworship and media team is performing tremendously. Since the implementation of theyouth board there have been 4 new songs that have been introduced into our youthservices. The creativity and media has skyrocketed since Melanie and Daniel took over.Ibelieve it is due to the fact that youth know what peaks the interest of other youth. Due totheir efforts, the unity and depth of worship in our youth services has demonstrated

growth. Our fundraising has experienced some success and I expect it to continue to

succeed. Since the implementation of the board there has been one fundraiser. A bake salewas recently held for Sheaves for Christ and we successfully raised nearly $300 dollars. Wehave many other fundraisers planned for the rest of summer that include a carwash, a rootbeer float sale and a yard sale, just to name a few. Elizabeth has done a great job stayingfaithful to her commitment and has demonstrated a true desire to help lead the youthgroup.

Event planning has not been successful the way that I anticipated it to be. Will, is ayoung man with exceptional character but his church attendance has diminished ever since

he moved to the mountains. At first, Will would plan events based upon the criteria andthings were going well. Our first event was a youth mixer with other groups at BoondocksFun Center. It was great, the parents were notified in the bulletin, the youth showed up andwe had a great time. However, since then Will has only been to church a couple of timesbecause he works late or does not have the gas money to drive. We still communicate withWill but I feel that in order to be an effective role he needs to have a physical presenceamong the youth. Planning out youth activities is one thing, but it is more important to befaithful to church. I have decided to take back over the events planning for the time being, which is frustrating because I did not foresee this happening. I am deciding about askinganother youth to fill the role and holding a vote within the youth board. However, I amhesitant because I want to make sure it will have a lasting effect. I also want the position to

maintain its sense of importance and meaning in the eyes of the youth.

The mentoring and ministry aspect of the youth board is making steady progress inour youth group. Daniel, Melanie and Elizabeth have done a good job of making themselvesavailable to their assigned youth. I have personally taken on the role of ministering to theyoung person who Will was working with to ensure that he is ministered to. So far ouryouth board members have done a good job of setting some time aside to personallymentor their youth. Daniel has actually begun a small Bible Study with Jonathan about
