Rev iew of 2014

RhonddaIt has been a busy few months at Apple Tree Stores with groups, courses, talks and Christmas celebrations.

Training Courses In October there was a Confidence Building Course, followed by an Assertiveness Course (provided by WEA), both of which benefitted service users immensely. This was followed up by an Everyday First Aid Course provided by the British Red Cross with all participants more confident in knowing how to help someone in need.

Art & Craft Group

Our Art & Craft Groups has been busy in the lead up to Christmas creating some wonderful Christmas decorations, garlands, stockings and a tiled snowman to name but a few.

Walking GroupThe Walking Group had a new participant joining us at the picturesque Clydach Lakes and will hopefully recommence in the spring (when the weather improves).

Talks & Sign Posting Age Connect came and gave a talk about the service it provides for our more mature service users. Service Users were interested to find out more about the services they provide such as hospital discharge service, benefit checks and a nail cutting service.

Christmas Celebrations On Tuesday 9th December our annual Christmas Meal at The Greenfields was enjoyed by all who attended. Some left feeling like they could impersonate Father Christmas, as the meal was plentiful and left them feeling a lot bigger than before they ate.

On Thursday 18th December we had a Christmas celebration at the centre, with a buffet and lots of festive chatter. Everyone left with smiles on their faces.

World Mental Health WeekRev iew of 2014

The RCT Mental Health Partnership once again worked together from Friday 3rd October to Friday 10th October to put on an array of informative events in the aim to promote services and reduce the stigma attached to having a mental health problem. On the 10th of October each year The World Health Organization joins in the celebration of World Mental Health Day. Established in 1992, the Day is celebrated at the initiative of the World Federation of Mental Health and the WHO supports this initiative through raising public awareness on mental health issues and promoting discussion. For 2014, the theme of the day was “living with” schizophrenia (Mental Health Foundation, 2014).

The programme through Cwm Taf was as follows:The Main Event in RCT was held at Hawthorne Leisure Centre- which included information stalls, flower arranging, Zumba and art and craft sessions as well as a fantastic exhibition piece by Interlink and Spectacle Theatre describing what schizophrenia was, showcasing people’s personal experiences of schizophrenia and drama workshops expelling myths and showing participants what it was like to hear voices which was also a main feature in the Merthyr Tydfil main event too.

“I was surprised how much there was to learn about schizophrenia and found it really educational, especially talking to someone who had lived with schizophrenia since adulthood.Reading peoples stories was I real eye opener I came away with a real insight into schizophrenia.”- SP’s account of what she learnt from visiting the main event in Hawthorne.

art and craft work of the service users and hearing the talented music group play live and demonstrations of the tools and information www.mentalhealthsupport.co.uk. It was great to see Councillor Mike Forey at the Aberdare Open Day ones again supporting the work of New Horizons.

• Quiz at Ton Pentre Football club. The annual quiz jointly organized by New Horizons and RCT CBC was once again a success with different organizations such as Rhondda Housing Association, Gofal and Adref bringing teams along. Questions ranged from general knowledge, sport and popular culture with the music round again being a popular one. Boyd Clack (actor, writer, musician and Patron of New Horizons) came along to participate and support the event and was happy as usual to meet and chat with service users and organisations and gave an account of his personal experience of mental illness.

“I was impressed that I answered more questions this year and the quiz was more modern. It was nice to socialize outside of New Horizons” JD’s account of the quiz night

• The Main Event in Merthyr Tydfil held at the leisure centre is always a popular event. Similar to the RCT event it provided information stalls about local services and help and advice, activities for people to participate in and had the Interlink piece on schizophrenia exhibiting (please see RCT main event paragraph). This event is always well attended, enjoyable and informative.

Friday 10th October World Mental Health Day – Information was provided on local mental health services at the atrium in the Royal Glamorgan hospital.Look out for our annual World Mental Health Week addition newsletter later on in the year.

New Horizons’ Youth Project Aberdare 2014/2015 On Thursday 27th November members of the youth project visited The University of South Wales to attend a Time To Change event. Alongside Making Minds (Mark Smith) and artisit (Rhiannon Grey) - Jo Davies, Beckie Thomas and Gemma Lewis spoke about the benefits the Creative Challenge had on their mental health.

The “Creative Challenge” funded by Time To Change and facilitated by Making Minds ran for members of the New Horizons Youth Group and it aimed to improve people’s mental health through creativity and to tackle mental health stigma and discrimination. Participants were involved in a variety of sessions including poetry, lyric writing, storytelling, digital storytelling, mask making and batik. Members of ‘Wicid’, Rhondda Cynon Taf’s youth information and advice service and a University student interested in art therapy were also involved in the project.Below is Gemma’s account at the University:“The event held by time to change was very informative, and interesting. It was really good to share what we did as part of the creative challenge. It was good to hear what has been done by others to break down the stigma which is around with mental health and also to hear what plans they have to try and challenge some more of the stigma”.

Jo, Gemma and Beckie are pictured standing next to their displayed art work at the University of South Wales.

Pyrography E3+ are currently providing activities in Pyrography (wood burning) Monday 12th Jan to 9th Feb 5pm -6pm for the youth in Aberdare. One of the young people is enjoying the activity so much that they have even bought their own kit off e-bay. Below are some of the images they have created.

In the run up towards Christmas staff asked service users to give constructive feedback on the services so that we could identify what we are doing well and also how we could improve. Service Users could enter anonymously or submit their name. As a gesture of thanks for those who entered there was a prize draw of a £30 Asda voucher (which was won a member who attends the Aberdare Youth Project). Thank you to everyone who took part.

Below is a summary of what was asked and the findings:What do you like about New Horizons’ Services?

The main findings for:Cynon - Friendly atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, welcoming, making friends, local, being able to be themselves and talk to people.

Rhondda- People feel that there is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where they can be themselves in New Horizons, and not labelled by their condition and friendly staff.

What is the most important to you about our services?

Cynon - There is no discrimination, you can talk to people and go on courses, knowing that there is someone there that you can talk to and that you have support.

Rhondda - That it a safe, supportive, non judgmental place where you can attend courses, get worries off your chest, have some independence and meet with people who care.

What don’t you like about New Horizons Services?

Cynon - Mostly can’t think of anything but would like longer opening times or extra days, the peer support at Hirwaun again, Hirwaun being until 4pm instead of 3pm and to be able to distinguish between the staff and service users.

Rhondda - Most people can’t think of anything they don’t like about our services, only issues raised are wanting to come more often but not being able to drive and waiting for people to arrive for courses.

What else could we do to improve our services in New Horizons?

Cynon - Most people didn’t have any suggestions but those who did said being more flexible.

Rhondda - would like greater funding for art & craft, more courses and informative talks, counselling and Depression Busting /Confidence Building courses, to create a ‘Friends of New Horizons’ to get funding for courses and activities.

Any other comments about our services?

Cynon- The comments for this were - grateful for their help and have given me hope for the future, No other than Brilliant, Keep up the good work and I feel the services are very good and should stay as they are.

Rhondda- That people have used the service more and more, that it is a lifeline and that it is vital it continues to offer hope with mental health. Illnesses and that the current NHS system is insufficient.

Christmas Carol Service On Friday 28th November New Horizons held our annual carol service at St LLeurwg’s Church Hirwaun.

The story of the nativity was read and the music group alongside some special guest performed carols. Patron Boyd Clack also gave a performance of a beautiful song he had written as did his partner Kirsten Jones who read, alongside members of New Horizons, part of the nativity story. It was lovely to see some of the Hirwaun community attend the event. Events such as this go a long way in the fight against stigma and show the talents of those that attend New Horizons.

New Horizons would like to thank everyone who attended and took part in the service especially the music group and volunteers Graham and Matthew Jefferies who worked very hard in the run up to the service to ensure it’s success.

Below is an account of the carol service by volunteer Graham Jefferies:

“The Christmas carol service went well this year, everyone enjoyed. Jason Samuels and Clive Williams started with a lovely instrumental piece followed by the rest of New Horizons music group, playing two nice carols. There was some very nice Christmas poems read out. The service lasted around one and a half hours everyone had a really good time and look forward to next year. Well done staff and helpers for all their effort.”

If you are experiencing mental health problems and have an interest in joining the weekly music group every Tuesday 1pm -3pm please contact the Aberdare resource centre.

Time to Change Pledge

On Thursday 4th December New Horizons was proud to be part of the event and witness the Cwm Taf University Health Board and both Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council signing of the Time To Change pledge on the behalf of it’s 21,000 workforce and listen to the inspirational speakers.

THREE of South Wales’ biggest service providers and employers have joined forces to end the stigma that still, all too often, surrounds mental health issues. By taking the Time To Change pledge, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Councils and Cwm Taf University Health Board are vowing to continue their work to offer open, honest and supportive workplaces in which people can manage mental health conditions without stigma or discrimination. With one in every three people in Wales believed to be affected by long-term or short-term mental health issues in their lifetimes, it is clear that – as the largest providers of employment and services – the partner agencies’ approach to mental health will have a huge impact on a large proportion of the population in the region. By taking the pledge, they are committing to continuing ongoing work to support employees (who are also residents) and also aspiring to embed action plans and organisational cultures across all three agencies, where mental health issues are not shrouded in secrecy or shame. The ultimate aim is for people to feel supported to be as open as they want to be about their mental health issues and the support they need. Senior leaders at all three of the organisations already work innovatively – together as a partnership and individually with their own workforces and communities – to effectively manage mental health issues and ensure people talk about mental health and do not shroud it in secrecy and stigma. Taking the pledge is the latest stage in that ongoing work and commitment. Time To Change is being delivered across Wales by the nation’s three largest mental health organisations, Gofal, Hafal and Mind Cymru and aims to open up the conversation around mental health, stripping away stigma and giving individuals and organisations tips and support on managing mental health – and what they can do to help.

w w w . n e w h o r i z o n s - m e n t a l h e a l t h . c o . u k10

Time to Change Pledge continued Cllr Mike Forey, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Partnerships, and Mental Health Champion, said: “Mental health issues can affect anyone at any time. The chances are, each and every one of us knows or has known someone who has suffered from mental illness. “As the largest employer in the county borough, the Council has, at a minimum, a duty of care to each and every one of its employees by promoting health and wellbeing to create a workplace where issues are prevented and, also, providing care and support to those who need it the most. “But we want to go further than the minimum, which is why we have pledged to Time To Change, creating an environment where there is no stigma, secrecy or discrimination. By harnessing the efforts of three of the largest service providers in the region, we are aiming to make a huge impact with this commitment.” Maria Thomas, acting Vice Chair at Cwm Taf University Health Board said: “Our organisations collectively employ more than 21,000 staff across Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Signing this pledge today is our public declaration that we will all step up to tackle mental health stigma and discrimination both within our organisation and the wider community.” “Within the Health Service we have seen the stigma of ill health, particularly conditions such as cancer being challenged which has led to attitudes being changed. As a result more people are seeking help earlier and outcomes have improved. We want the same for everyone experiencing a mental health problem.” More about the Time to Change Wales pledge

The Time to Change Wales pledge is a public declaration that we want to step up to tackle mental health stigma and discrimination. We will commit in an action plan to taking actions that are realistic and appropriate, which will lead to a reduction in discrimination within the three organisations and the wider community. More organisations stepping up to make the organisational pledge means more noise is being made – helping to break the silence around mental health. Imagine if every organisation in Wales made a public pledge to tackle stigma: employers big and small, councils, universities, football clubs, places of worship, charities… that would send a powerful message that mental health is something that can be talked about, and that stigma and discrimination are not welcome.

National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH)

NCMH is a research organisation aiming to help develop better diagnosis, treatment and support for people affected by mental health conditions in the future.

Researchers at the centre are working to find out more about the causes behind mental illness, from genetics and biology to psychological and environmental factors.

To help achieve this they need people to participate in their research. Taking part is easy and involves a brief interview with a trained researcher who will also take a small blood sample and leave you with some short questionnaires to complete in your own time. The whole process takes less than an hour and can even be done in your own home.

To find out more about volunteering with NCMH visit www.ncmh.info/help-us or phone 029 2068 8401.

Join the thousands in Wales working towards better mental health.

The National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) is working to learn more about the causes of mental health problems such as bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia.

Over 4000 people from across Wales have taken part in the centre’s research and scientists are calling for more people to volunteer so they are able to help improve diagnosis, treatment and support in the future.

Taking part is quick and easy – it involves a short interview with a trained researcher, giving a small blood sample and completing some brief questionnaires in your own time. The process normally takes less than hour and all the data provided is stored securely and anonymously.

“By giving under an hour of your time, you will be helping to make life better for people with mental health conditions in the years to come” said NCMH director Professor Ian Jones. “As well as being quick, taking part is confidential and painless, and it can even be done in your own home.”

Anyone of any age with experience of a mental health condition can take part in the research, with previous volunteers aging from 4 to 96 years old.

Even those without lived experience of a mental health condition can take part through the centre’s Plus One scheme – this allows family and friends to help too. Their information can help scientists make important comparisons in their research.

You can volunteer by visiting www.ncmh.info/help-us or texting TIME to 60777. You can also contact the centre on 029 2068 8401 or email [email protected] for more information.
