CHAMPIONSHIPRECORDS
1939 — 2015
FIFTH EDITION — 2015
INTRODUCTIONThe following pages contain, as far as I can ascertain, the winners and runners-up of all Men's and Boys' New Zealand domestic competitions since the inception of our sport up until the completion of the most recent season. At this time I have not been able to document all runners-up prior to 1958, but hopefully some of that information will become available in due course. Remember, too, that between 1945 and 1949 the Beatty Cup was decided on a challenge basis.Earlier listings of the various championship winners have generally been assembled under a trophy banner, ie winners of the Beatty Cup or the Bensel Cup. While that method served the purpose admirably at the time, changes — notably sponsorship and different tournament formats — make that approach, in my opinion, more cumbersome. Many trophies were re-allocated and sometimes superceded, and on occasions reappeared in a different role, which sometimes made it difficult to follow just what competition/format they were being awarded to. I have therefore opted to list competitions continuously from the beginning until, in some cases, they were eventually discontinued altogether and note, as best I can, the various stages trophies were awarded or discarded. With most age-group categories I have added explanatory notes, which hopefully make clearer the evolution of the various grades. These days our "official records" largely ignore the days before Under-19, Under-17 and Under-15 grades, but I think it is important to ensure the records are maintained as accurately as possible right from the beginning of those grades which played such a huge part in building our sport in the '60s.For this updated Second and subsequent editions of the records I have added all relevant individual batting records covering all grades from the time I have been able to establish they were first awarded. In some cases awards initially carried tournament sponsors' names, but with lack of clarity around later award names I have opted, in most cases, to not record the trophy name. Batting records follow on immediately after their relevant tournament category. Also, on the last page, I have included records of the New Zealand Players of the Year from their inception as the Bank of New South Wales awards in the 1968-69 season. Unfortunately tracing the winners has not been as clearcut as it probably should have been because of the haphazard way of recording resuts in annual reports when awards were often not able to be published prior to their presentation and subsequent listings recorded the wrong year. Consequently we cannot establish, with certainty, the 1982-83 and 1983-84 winners when John Vaughan & Co had the naming rights. Their involvement with the "Player of the Year" awards should not be confused with their sponsorship of "Player of the Tournament" awards in the same years. Any information welcome. While I've tried to ensure the accuracy of these records by double checking wherever there was a doubt, I'll be surprised if there is not a slip-up somewhere. In a few places listings vary from previously published records and where I have come across a conflict I have referred to NZSA annual reports, old programmes or newspaper reports and even my own favourite publication, "Softball Scene". However, I am keen to receive feedback from anyone who can enhance the accuracy of this material. In the interests of brevity I have opted to assemble men's and women's records in separate documents, both of which I have forwarded to you. I have also chosen to colour code the two genders to save any confusion and accordingly RED denotes Women's and Girls' grades, while GREEN identifies Men's and Boys' grades.Note that the identifying colour also denotes the beginning of a new grade, while the colour Black marks a change in name/classification/age within that section. Example UNDER 19 BOYS and SENIOR SCHOOLBOYS.

UNDER 19 BOYSThis tournament evolved out of the original Senior Schoolboys Tournament which was first played in 1963. In 1981 the tournament became an age limit event for Under 18 Boys and a new tournament, Under 16 Boys, was added to the national calendar. The 1985 national tournament held at Fowlds Park in Auckland moved to an under 19 age limit because of New Zealand's intention to enter the under 19 Junior World Championships for the first time that year. The age limit reverted to under 18 for the 1986 tournament played at Logan Park, Dunedin, but from the 1987 event played at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt, it has been contested as an under 19 tournament. The Hutchings Cup, awarded to the runner-up from 1980, was originally awarded to the Second Division winner from 1976.

NATIONAL JUNIOR SCHOOLBOYSFirst played in 1959 at the Polo Ground, Miramar, Wellington. Played in conjunction with the Girls' tournament until 1968.Tournament discontinued after 1969, but resumed in Lower Hutt in 1974 as an invitational tournament hosted by Hutt Valley. Interestingly all four tournaments, Boys' and Girls' Junior and Senior were played in conjunction in Auckland in 1964.Became Under 15 Boys in 1980, Under 14 Boys in 1981 before becoming North and South Island Under 14 in 1982. Became North and South Island Under 15 in 1995 and has remained that way.Tournaments became "open" to entrants from either island in 2000, with the proviso that associations that wished to enter the "other" island tournament must also field a team in their own island fixture. In the 1999-2000 season the Annual Air New Zealand Awards, announced at the AGM, were inaugurated. They covered the categories of Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, Umpire of the Year, Scorer of the Year, Administrator of the Year and Personality of the Year. Category winners received a return fare within New Zealand and the overall winner (Softballer of the Year) receiving a double (later single) return fare to Australia. The separate awards were made for three seasons before all awards were merged in 2003 and the winners named at the AGM or on an appropriate occasion.
