ASK  THE  ADVISORASK  THE  ADVISORHoliday Spending Can Help Teach Children About Money

During this holiday season, you’ll likely be spending money, in various

amounts and in various ways. And you can use this experience to teach yourchildren about money management. Here are a few ideas for doing just that:• Stick to a budget. Tell your children you’ve set aside a certain amount of money for gifts and holiday events, such as hosting parties, and that youwon’t exceed it. And if you have saved money throughout the year in a spe-cial holiday fund, let your kids know about that, too. This informationshould help impress upon them the importance of sticking with a budget andsaving for a goal.• Discuss credit and debt. Ideally, you won’t have to use your credit cardsto an unusual degree during the holiday season. If you do, though, explain toyour children that using a credit card is not the same thing as “free” money, and that your goal is to pay off the card as soon as possible, so that you won’thave to pay even more for your purchases in the form of interest payments.• Compare short- and long-term goals. Explain to your children that yourholiday spending is the result of having saved for, and met, a short-term goal, but that you are also saving for long-term goals, such as retirement.Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to go into somewhat moredetail, such as describing, in general terms, the different ways you save forthe different goals. For example, for your holiday spending, you might bedrawing on money from your checking account — or, as mentioned above, aholiday fund, possibly kept in a low-risk, liquid vehicle — while for yourlong-term goals, you might be relying in part on your employer-sponsoredretirement plan, such as a 401(k). The key point to get across is that you havevarious financial goals in life with various means of working toward achiev-ing them.• Introduce your children to investing. If you’ve already brought up thetopic of saving for long-term goals, why not take it a step further and giveyour children a doorway into the investment world? Specifically, considergiving them a few shares of stock, possibly in companies with which they arealready familiar, and help them follow these stocks. One way of giving stocksto children is through a custodial account, which can be opened under theUniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) or the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act(UGMA). Keep in mind, though, that once your child reaches the age of majority — usually 18 or 21 — he or she gets full control of the money in theaccount. Plus, your gift is irrevocable.• Be generous. If you’re going to make charitable gifts, let your kids knowabout it — or even let them help pick the charities. It will show them that onepurpose of wealth accumulation is to give back to the world.

By providing some financial education to your kids this holiday season, you’ll be giving them a gift that can last long after the festivities have ended.

your tree simple by choosing one or two colors for the tree's

décor.

For kids, decorate with their favorite color. Make tissue-

paper flowers to place on your tree. All you need is tissue

paper and pipe cleaners.

For a tree that will help you remember the good times, hang

mementos that you've collected throughout the year instead

of traditional, often expensive ornaments. Choose knick-

knacks from family vacations, party pictures, favors from

weddings or showers, or kids' arts and crafts projects. Hang

holiday greeting cards from family and friends on your tree.

To turn these trinkets into ornaments, glue or attach ornament

hangers to each item. Your tree will be a reminder of the fun

shared throughout the year.

For a more international feel, use inexpensive wrapping

paper to make origami cranes -- symbols of peace. Paper

birds of all sizes will look beautiful on your tree and can be

fun project for the whole family.

Residents speak about refugee issue during meetinBY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN

MANAGING EDITOR

Issues surrounding the possibleacceptance of Syrian refugees into theUnited States was a concern amongattendees at a "town hall" meetinghosted by Rep. F. James Sensenbrennerin Menomonee Falls Nov. 21.

"Regarding the Syrian refugee(issue), thank you for your support hit-ting the pause button," MenomoneeFalls resident Jefferson Davis said. "Thenumber one responsibility of you andthe other people in Congress is to pro-tect us and our safety. I think you'redoing the right thing and you will con-tinue to do that.

A few minutes earlier BarbMesserknecht of Menomonee Falls saidshe is a member of the Good ShepherdImmigration Study Group.Messerknecht said she is "concernedabout what is happening with the ideaof accepting refugees. Every time I gettogether with people it's always aboutfear and it always comes down to reli-gion and I think we have to look at thefact that all Lutherans don't think the

same, all Catholics don't think thesame, all Muslims don't think the same."

Messerknecht asked Sensenbrenner"are you planning to work for a morefair legislation to accept refugees fromother countries?"

Sensenbrenner said that under theRefugee Act of 1980 the United Statesaccepts the United Nations definition of refugee, which is "someone who has awell founded fear of political or reli-gious persecution if they return home."

He explained that for many yearsthe United States has been acceptingapproximately 70,000 refugees per year

which fit into that definition."That is more refugees that havebeen accepted than by all other coun-tries of the world combined. There iscertainly has not been a lack of com-passion on the part of the UnitedStates," Sensebrenner said.

He further explained the UN defini-tion excludes economic migrants. Hesaid "it obvious to me that SyrianChristians do fit under the definition(of refugee)." He said the interviewingof refugees occur overseas. If religiouspersecution is claimed, there can beways to check that out.

"Obviously, in the ISIS controlledparts of Syria, that can't happen,"Sensenbrenner said.

Sensenbrenner said that the FBI

Director James Comey and the NationalIntelligence Director James Clapper didsay the were concerned with ISIS infil-trating people who were applying forrefugee status in comments that weremade before the Nov. 13 Paris terror

attacks.Sensenbrenner said that on Nov. 18

the House of Representatives approveda "pause" in the program to take inSyrian refugees fleeing ISIS to allow theSecretary of Homeland Security, the FBIDirector and the National IntelligenceDirector to take steps to make sure thatrefugees coming into the United States

were properly vetted."That is something I think is essen-tial to make sure the refugee programsurvives," Sensenbrenner said.

He added that the Obama adminis-tration suspended the Iraqi refugee pro-gram for six months in 2011 when itwas found there were six terror suspectswho were resettled through that pro-gram. He said the pause in acceptingSyrian refugees is "a reasonable step."The refugee program for Syria and Iraqwill be resumed under this bill as soonas the President and administration setup the type of screening so that thethree officials I just mentioned will beable to sign off on individuals who arecoming in the country."

Sensenbrenner further stated he will

examine how the screening of refugeeswill occur. When there were refugeescoming to the US from Poland andEthiopia, Sensenbrenner took a trip toEurope where he observed refugeesbeing interviewed.

Later, Susan Schneider of Menomonee Falls said the "pause" in theSyrian refugee program is importantand potential refugees need to be prop-

erly vetted."But I don't we need to g

board," she said.Sensenbrenner said when t

ting process comes up, he will observe how it is done "and decision for myself."

Davis also asked Sensenabout an estimated 11 to 12

people from Mexico who are country illegally."At some point we've got t

handle on that and I know you'lright thing. I think it's going tochange in the White House to gdone," Davis said.

In response, Sensenbrenn"the way to get a handle on thisthrowing the book at employebreak the job by giving jobs toimmigrants."

Sensenbrenner said busineshire illegal aliens often pay in cdon't pay Social Security, wocompensation or state and taxes.

"We've got to look at the emwho break the law because th

magnet to bring more illegal imminto the country," Sensenbrenne

He added that "obviously weable to have a mass deportatiophysically impossible. I don't twould be morally correct becausof these people have children wborn here and are United States based upon the fact that they win the United States."

Falls Patio Playerspresenting 'Christmas Carol'

"And the Tradition goes on..." FallsPatio Players again performs thebeloved version of Charles Dickens' clas-sic "Christmas Carol". The sets aregoing up and Patio Players are measur-ing for costumes. Two of their very own

members, the late Carol Klose and thelate Jack Strawbridge, collaborated towrite this musical version, whichencompasses French and English carolsas well as many original songs. It hastruly become a family tradition, of which, Menomonee Falls can be proud. We are also excited to be celebratingour 50th season.

The director of this year's Falls PatioPlayer production of "Christmas Carol"told the story of how it came to be:

"I remember well the moment JackStrawbridge began the process of creat-ing his “Christmas Carol”. The PatioPlayers Board of Directors was meeting

to select shows for the following sea-son, and the production we’d hoped tostage, “Scrooge!”, became unavailable.Once the idea was put forth to createour own version of the classic DickensChristmas story, he was off! Jack, alongwith Carol Klose, his wonderful and tal-ented friend, put countless hours intoadapting the story and rearranging andcomposing music so that his belovedPatio Players could continue with a val-ued tradition. The production evolvedover time, including a revision by CarolKlose and Melissa Bloch-Meier severalyears ago, but the heart of the originalremains. I now see another generationof performers taking the stage, eventhe grandchildren of some of the origi-nal actors. The little girls who play Fanlook forward to the day they mighttake the role of Christmas Past orIsabelle. Men (and women) trade storiesof how tall they were when they final-ly graduated out of the Magic Minutesoldier dance! Both Carol and Jack havepassed on, but the legacy of their cre-ation will remain in the bonds of

friendships formed between the hun-dreds of children and adults who havebeen a part of this show, whether onthe stage or behind it."

Shows are at North Middle Schoolauditorium on N88 W16750 Garfield Dr.in Menomonee Falls. Performances areon Friday, December 4th at 7 pm,Saturday, December 5th at 3 & 7 pmand Sunday, December 6th at 1 & 4pm. Tickets can be purchased on-line atfallspatioplayers.com or on the 24 hrinformation line@ 262-255-8372.Adults/Seniors are $10 and Studentsare $8.
