MenEngageAllianceNewsBrief:July2016NewsfromtheAllianceMenEngageAlliancee-dialogueexploresprospectsandchallengesofmakingworkwithmenandboysgendertransformativeMenEngageAllianceinAprilfacilitatedacriticalonlinediscussionamongkeyconstituentsonarangeofstrategicandpracticalquestionsrelatedtoengagingmenandboysandtransformingmasculinitiesinthewomen’srightsandgenderjusticefield.Participantsfromallcornersoftheglobe–134peoplefrom41countriesregisteredfortheevent–cametogetherforalively,thought-provokingdialogue,sharingexperiences,concerns,lessonslearnedandrecommendationsaboutpartnership,accountabilityandtransformativework.InJuly,theAllianceissuedareportsummarizingkeydiscussionpoints,trendsandrecommendationsthatemergedfromthee-dialogue.Itexploreshowthisworkmightbe(come)gendertransformativebychallengingstructuresandpoliticizingworkwithmenandboys,buildingpartnerships,addressingthequestionoffunding,workingbothtogetherandindependently,workingwithfaithleadersandwithboysandyoungmen,improvingmonitoringandevaluationand,importantly,buildingnetworksforchange.MenEngageAllianceGlobalBoardandstrategicplanningmeetingschartthewayforward
MenEngageAllianceBoardmembersandrepresentativesfromUNandotherpartnersmetinVårdinge,Sweden,duringJune21-23forboththeAlliance’sannualBoardmeetingandastrategicplanningmeetingtoplotthewayforwardforitsnextstrategicperiod,2017-2020.Bothofferedasnapshotofavibrant,growingAllianceintransition,itsmembershipupto699organizationsandindividualsacross66countries,connectedvia36countryandsixregionalnetworks,itsinfrastructureincreasinglyformalizedandinterconnected.TheBoardmeetingnotedtheJanuaryincorporationoftheGlobalSecretariatasanindependent

…andatWomenDeliverConferenceonSDGsandsupportingwomenandgirls’SRHRAlmost6000peoplefrom169countries–thelargestgatheringforgirls’andwomen’shealthinrightsinthelastdecade–cametogetherforWomenDeliver’s4thGlobalConferenceinCopenhagen,Denmark,duringMay16-19.ItsfocuswashowtoimplementtheSustainableDevelopmentGoalssothattheymattermostforgirlsandwomen,withaspecificfocusonhealth–inparticularmaternal,sexual,andreproductivehealthandrights–andongenderequality,education,environment,andeconomicempowerment.TheInternationalPlannedParenthoodFederation(IPPF)representedtheAllianceattheconferenceinthepersonofJameelZamir,DeputyProgramsDirectorforIPPF’sSouthAsiaoffice.LeadersfromotherAlliancemembers,includingPromundoandSonkeGenderJustice,alsospokeonpaneldiscussionsabouttheroleoffathersinwomen’sandgirls’healthandequality;thepoliticsofpleasure,sexualityandhumanrights;deconstructinggenderthroughsexualrights;andthepromotionofequitable,nonviolentfatherhood,amongothers.MenEngageAlliancestatementonOrlandonightclubshooting‘ThecollectiveheartsoftheMenEngageAlliancegoouttothevictimsoftheOrlandonightclubshootingandmourntheirandtheirfamilies’profoundloss.Wecondemnthisterribleactofviolence.‘WestandinsolidaritywithLGBTQIcommunitiesinOrlandoandeverywhere:thearcofhistoryisbendingtowardthefulfillmentoftheirrights,andnothingwillchangeitscourse.‘WeasanAlliancerededicateourselvestochallengingandtransformingthecultural,socialandgendernormsthattoooftenactivatehatred,violenceanddiscrimination,andweurgentlyaskourleadersandfellowcitizenstodolikewiseinboththeirprofessionalandpersonalconduct.Failuretoactisnolongeracceptable;atthispoint,it’snodifferentthancomplicity.’

MenEngageEuropemembersreceiveEUfundingtosharebestpracticesonworkwithboystopreventsexualizedharassmentandviolenceMenforGenderEquality(Sweden),Emancipator(Netherlands)–bothMenEngageEuropemembers–andGreatInitiative(UK)havereceivedDaphnefundsfromtheEUforatwo-year-projecttocollect,developfurtheranddisseminatebestpracticesfromtheregionwithinthefieldofworkwithboystopreventsexualizedharassmentandviolence.Theprojectwillmakeitpossibleforgroupsoftrainersandpeereducatorsfromthethreepartnercountriestomeetandexchangeexperiencesonbestpractices,aswellastoimplementactivitiesonthegroundineachcountry.Associatepartnerswhowillcontributetheirownexperiencesandknowledgeaswellasparticipateinthefinalconferencein2018arePoika(Austria),Dissens(Germany),Conexus(Spain)andStatusM(Croatia).ThefindingsandlearningsthroughouttheprojectwillbesharedwithinthewiderMenEngageAlliancenetwork.
MenEngageAfricapartnersinEastAfricaholdworkshoponSGBVinconflictsettingsMenEngageAfricapartnersinEastAfricaandfaith-basedorganizationsmetinKigali,Rwanda,inAprilforatwo-dayworkshoponaddressingsexualandgender-basedviolenceagainstwomenandgirlsinconflictandpost-conflictsettingsinAfrica.Workshopgoalswere:toincreaseawarenessofconflictspastandpresentinAfricaandtheireffectsoncitizens,especiallywomenandgirls;tobuildcapacitytoconductadvocacyinandoutsideconflictzonesandhowtoreportanddocumentGBVinresource-andinfrastructure-constrainedconflictzones;tocapacitateMEApartnersonhowtomobilizethefaith-basedsectorformeaningfulinterventions;andtofamiliarizeparticipantsoninternationalprotocolsrelatedtoconflict,includingUNSCResolution1325.MorenewsfromMenEngageAfrica:
