Born: September 12, 1880Died: January 29, 1956

H.L. Mencken is best known for his biting commentary on subjects ranging from politics to literature to the everyday mores of the “Booboisie.” Getting his start at the Baltimore Morning Herald, Mencken eventually moved on to the Baltimore Sun. In 1908, Mencken became a literary critic for The Smart Set, a defining voice of what came to be known as “The Jazz Age.” He later went on to help found The American Mercury.
