In the Editor’s 14aiI(Editor’s Note: When Juth

Hibberd Smith was here for herparents’ $ixdeth Wedding Anniversary, we asked her to write

a letter, some time when shead a moment to spare. We’renrc you will enjoy her responseaswedid.)Dear Connie:

You can’t Imagine what?leasUre it gave me to comeback to Weidman and meet somany old friends, finding cvelyone looking so well andcontented. Frances is her owndear self, and with her I feltthat only a short time hadpassed Instead of (heavens!)35 years.

After the excitement of thereceptions, ours and Dr. Clarks’had died down, Nelson and Itook our first tip to NorthernMichigan. Except for. rain atMackinac, so that we onlysaw the bridge through a mist, the weather was beautiful, butoh! so cold! Every morningthe car was encased in.thlck.ice,. and we ran the engineduring breakfast to melt it sowe could drive.

We stayed all night in Maui-sing at the Greenland Motel(is this a plug? ). The hostess-.-.I shall always love her--broughus coffee and toast and a bigdish of homemade jelly, •on atray, right to our room. Thatcertainly got THAT day oftto a good start.

We visited several of thebeautiful waterfalls in thatvicinity. Munising Falls, andMiners Falls, are both ratherremote, but if you’re wearingyour walking shoes you don’tmind.

We also went to Taquamenonwhere we saw the only wildlife of our whole trip. Therewas a whole family oL rabbits, maybe several families, Idon’t know, pasturing on thelawn. They seemed fairlytame, so like a real tourist Itied feeding them. Nelsontook my picture giving acookie to a rabbit, and do youknow, the ungrateful beastbit me! I’m glad it wasn’ta bear. I guess, though, had

it been a bear, I wouldn’thave been feeding it!There was only one thing on

the tip that caused me woe, andfor that, Connie, there oughtto be a law! In fact, Ithinkthere is.

Wherever we went, in allthat beautiful country, where itit Is so quiet you can hear yourown heartbeat, and so beautifulyou feel like you are in church- -everywhere you see emptybeer cans and bottles. Obviously, there are not enoughforest rangers to police thegreat forests every day, but myquestion Is, if the sightseershave the strength to carry thefull cam into the parks thenwhy can’t they carry the emptyones out? Why must they clutter the landscape with theirbeer cam, cigarette packets, gum wrappers, candy wrappers, pretzel and potato-chip bags?

We find it convenient to carry a package of kitchen garbage bags, the waterproof kind. Each night a used one Is discarded--and It’s usually fullof junk we have accumulatedduring the day--and at leastI don’t have it on my conscience that I have scatteredIt to the four winds.

I know, many people do thisalso--but there are so manywho don’t.

It was a wonderful five daysand 1400 miles. We enjoyedit tremendously, but no morethan our visit to Weidman.

Give my love to your mother, Connie. Kindest regardsto all.

Last Sunday afternoon theDeerfield- Weidman MYFsponsored a color tour for oldermembers of the church. It

have been more perfectfect weather and although onlythee cars made the tol4enthusiasm of the group morethan made up for the lack innumber. Most of us DID have“four eyes” but even so, oneneeded a half dozen pairs to

• be able to see all directionsat once to enjoy the blaze ofcolor. After many miles oflovely scenery in a large blocksouth and west of Weidman,

the group was brought back to- the church basement where

the young people and someof the mothers and fathers hadprepared a lovely lunch, withtables prettily decorated withyellow tapers and bouquets ofautumn flowers.

After the lunch, there wasa Singsplration and severalspecial •numbers given by someof the MYF.

when one hears and reads somuch about juvenile delinquiucy that the other side of thepicture should be shown andcredit given to the many outstanding things many of ouryoung poeple are doing today, contributing to many activitiesin church, school and othercivic enterprises.

Speaking as one of those whoenjoyed the thoughtfulness of

V

the young people, let us allnot be so quick to criticiseand a little quicker to letthem know how much weapprove of the nice things theydo.

Eight members of the MYF,accompanied by two adults, attended the District YouthRally at fremont Sunday aftersoon and report having avery nice time.
