• MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) are semiconductor devices that include moving parts in the µm - mm rangeand use a photolithography process for manufacturing. A MEMS pressure sensor is a device for pressure measurementof gases or liquids. It converts a pressure into an electric signal.
Supply chain positioning of pressure sensors:
• MEMS pressure sensor chips are made of silicon (front-end manufacturing), generally assembled with an ASIC chip, and packaged in first-level packaging (back-end manufacturing). Second-level packaging adds further electronics, robust housing, and connectors. In this report we only consider first-level packaging’s value, and not 2nd-level, module value.
• Exceptions: for TPMS, we consider TPMS’ SiP value (pressure sensor + accelerometer, RF, MCU), and for applications that integrate chips directly in second-level packaging (automotive HVAC or oil, etc), we consider a theoretical first-level packaging value.

• Green mobility regulationsspurred growth for variouspowertrain pressure sensors
• Consumer market is blooming due to new use cases that are thriving (e-call, etc)
• Nothing significant has happened in the medical domainfor pressure sensors
• TPMS adoption in China was slower than anticipated
• We revamped the ASP of consumer pressure MEMS slightly upwards, as we had underestimated them in the past
• We revamped downwards the ASP for Engine oil, Automatic transmission oil, EGR and HVAC in automotive, because for these applications there is no 1st-level housing. The sensor die goes directly to 2nd level packaging (transmitter)
• We re-estimated the Defense & Aerospace market downwards, as previously the number of pressure MEMS per aircraft was too high

Covid-19 pandemic was unpredictable, therefore, 2018 vs. 2020
report forecasts are different accordingly
131313
Due to the unprecedented Covid-19 situation, some of the various devices, applications, markets, etcthat we monitor inYole are expected to show significant declines, with respect to 2019.
Since this is a one-time event, represented as a « glitch » in our graphs for 2020, we will show at everyforecast graph simultaneously two CAGR numbers:
• CAGR20-26 (CAGRN-1→N+5): N is the base year, with the CAGR going from N-1 up to N+5 (typicalYole forecasts) → the CAGR in this case will be necessarily big for markets/applications thatsuffered in 2020. Therefore, this won’t represent well the market dynamics which are drivenby global market trends pre-existing and out-living covid.
• CAGR19-26 (CAGRN-2→N+5): N is the base year, with CAGR going from N-2 up to N+5 → in thatcase, the CAGR is closer to describing the actual market dynamics, effectively smoothening out the2020 glitch.
While the CAGR20-26 will give an outlook of how quick the growth will come back after covid-19, wewill mainly refer to CAGR19-26.
The fundamentals won’t change, simply: CAGR20-26 > CAGR19-26

PRESSURE SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES
Main pressure sensor technologies
Technologies are segmented primarily by pressure range.
MEMS technologies are definitely the technology of choice for low-pressure applications thanks to MEMS’ low cost andsmall size
For medium pressure, MEMS compete mostly with ceramic
For high pressure, MEMS compete with thin-film. However, MEMS are limited to 1,000 bars, whereas thin-film can go toseveral thousand bars.

PRESSURE SENSORS
Different pressure sensor types
Pressure sensor type depends on the application.
Differential:
o Measure the difference between two pressure points (P1 and
P2)
o Widely used for flow measurement
Gauge:
o A special type of differential measurement: one side of the
diaphragm has built-in atmospheric pressure as a reference
Absolute pressure sensor:
o The reference pressure is 0 bar
o This is the most common pressure sensor type

MEMS PRESSURE SENSOR - APPLICATIONS
Maximum pressure, by MEMS application
Pressure range is an important criteria for market segmentation and technologies’ positioning.
Low-pressure applications: automotive (powertrain, safety), consumer, medical, avionics air data. MEMS technologies lead.
Medium-pressure: automotive (powertrain, safety, comfort), industrial, avionics. MEMS compete with ceramic and thin-film.
High-pressure: industrial & avionics. MEMS compete with thin-film.
