Jan 7 – Nov 16, 2012Narrated by Academy-Award® winner Morgan Freeman, Born to be Wild is an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. This film documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them—saving endangered species one life at a time. Stunningly captured in IMAX, Born to be Wild is a heartwarming adventure transporting moviegoers into the lush rainforests of Borneo with world–renowned primatologist Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas, and across the rugged Kenyan savannah with celebrated elephant authority Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick, as they and their teams rescue, rehabilitate and return these incredible animals back to the wild.

This exhibition has been made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Bison: American

Icon was organized by the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana.

The National Endowment for the Humanities presents

An NEH on the Road Exhibition

Jan 28 – May 25, 2012Few animals conjure the power and symbolic

presence of the North American bison. Whether painted on a tipi or an artist’s canvas, minted on a nickel, or seen grazing at Shelby Farms

and yellowstone National Park, the image of the bison stirs in us deep loyalties to the North

American landscape. Wild and fundamental, the bison is a familiar part of our shared heritage.

The Bison: American Icon explores the meaning and significance of this iconic creature for the Plains Indian culture of the 1800s through the

commercial and national symbol of the present. Along the way, The Bison charts the dramatic

changes that occured to the creature and its habitat, and to the people who depended upon it for daily existence. The exhibition also illuminates

the human response that eventually led to the bison’s preservation as a species and a symbol

in the twentieth century. The Bison includes Plains Indian artifacts, contemporary Native American

art, popular culture items, small models and sculptures, and some natural history materials.

In association with The Field Museum, Chicago and the university of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

FOSSIL TOOTH DONATION

David Powell, a student at The Kings Daughters School in Columbia, Tennessee, found this tooth while on a field trip to the Duck river. David has an avid interest in paleontology, so he immediately realized that this tooth was not from a modern animal. He and his parents, Patricia and George Powell, took the the specimen to the McWane Science Center in their hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. The staff there identified the fossil as bison latifrons, a huge ice age bison that became extinct sometime between 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. Because David found the fossil in Tennessee, he thought that it should go to a museum in Tennessee. He chose the Pink Palace. We are very happy to add it to our collection. < David Powell giving his fossil find to Pink Palace Conservator roy young

B O A R D O F t r u s t e e s

The first months of the year are always difficult. The holidays are over, the weather, unpromising. Valentine’s Day is okay, but the only other thing to look forward to is President’s Day. enough said.

Two thousand twelve will be different, though. Whatever the weather, there will be many wonderful things going on at the Pink Palace Family of Museums. First, the IMAX® film Born to Be Wild opens January 7. This film won five Giant Screen Cinema Association Awards including Best Film for Lifelong Learning. In it Morgan Freeman narrates the story of valiant people who rescue orphaned orangutans and elephants.

At the same time, we will be offering a unique exhibit, Bison: American Icon. On its own, this traveling exhibit would be great. Our staff has augmented it with seldom seen Plains Indian artifacts from the Field Museum in Chicago and the university of Pennsylvania Museum. Truly, no one will ever see all of these artifacts in one place again.

And, as the Pythoners always said, here is something completely different: the Seed Swap at Lichterman Nature Center January 28. It is a chance to exchange seed stock with others, seeds you can soon plant and tend. After all, Spring will come, and winter will end.

Thank you!

Steve Pike, Director of Museums
