Driving for QuAlity CAreDriving for Quality Care is a nationwide petition tour and grassroots initiative to urge President Obama, the United States Congress and America’s Governors to take immediate steps to preserve and protect America’s long term and rehabilitative care services so that every U.S. senior and disabled citizen can access the quality care they need, expect and deserve.

The tour, sponsored by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living, will hold more than 60 petition-signing events for the media and the general public in 40 states to provide patients, residents, family members, caregivers and citizens across America the chance to voice their concerns about Medicaid funding shortages that threaten access to quality care and could jeopardize crucial health care jobs.

In addition to building grassroots support via a 4ft x 60ft traveling petition, Driving for Quality Care will empower citizen activists online by providing

the opportunity to sign the petition, write their legislators, recruit friends via email and social media, share personal stories, and follow the tour’s progress - all from the interactive website, http://www.drivingforqualitycare.com.

America’s nursing, rehabilitation and assisted living providers remain committed to maintaining and enhancing quality care and services for the residents, patients, and communities they serve. Driving for Quality Care is a cause intended to make that goal a reality.

We hope you will join us in this important effort to raise awareness and build support to make adequate funding of Medicaid and Medicare a top health care policy priority.

gooDseArCh & gooDshopDid you know that you can help St. Benedict’s raise funds just by searching the web and shopping online? At GoodSearch.com, each time you make a search, they’ll donate a penny. If you shop online at GoodShop.com, there are more than 600 merchants that will donate a percentage of each purchase to St. Benedict’s! Just type in St. Benedict’s Health Center under “Who do you Goodsearch for?” We all know that a penny isn’t much, but hundreds of pennies start to add up!

Newport 50cc Scooter, courtesy of Dan Porter Motors and St. Benedict’s Health Center. There are also two trips included this year! One includes 2 round-trip airline tickets from Dickinson to Denver, Colorado, courtesy of Great Lakes Airlines. The other includes 2 round-trip airline tickets from Bismarck to Las Vegas, Nevada, courtesy of Allegiant Air. Both trips include $250 spending cash for the lucky winners! Tickets are for sale at St. Benedict’s, and will also be available at Autumnfest.

We’d like to thank our wonderful volunteer committee, heading up this year’s festivities: Jeannette Berger, chair; Irene Hamilton, bake sale; Joan Sickler and Renae Sticka, ethnic meal; Millie Wanner and Kathryn Jilek, Liturgy; Gayle Bren, decorations and craft sale; Mary Agostini, cake Walk; Veronica Mann, Chair Emeritus. We’d also like to extend a big thank you to the individuals who step up to help with baking, setup, serving, and take-down. We appreciate all your efforts in making this day such a fun and successful event!

When the holidays arrive, many families want to share

a meal at St. Benedict’s. We want to accommodate

everyone and allow all residents to have the

opportunity to host their families. We ask that you

please give at least a 1 week notice when coming to

St. Benedict’s for holiday meals. You can make

arrangements by calling 456-7242 and asking for

Activities. Thank you.

Holiday photo opportunities will once again be available for residents this year. When details have been arranged, residents will be informed, and family members will

receive information by mail.

ChAnges for soCiAl serviCesWe would like the family members of current residents to be aware of a change that will be implemented on October 1st. New Federal regulations mandate that we ask every resident, during their quarterly assessment, whether they would like to speak to someone regarding returning to the community. While this change may create some confusion at first, social services will do what they can to guide residents, and their families, through the process. For further information, please contact Donalda Binstock, Director of Social Services, at 456-7242.

holidayThe holiday season will be upon us before we know it, and we’d like to offer a few gift suggestions for those with loved ones at St. Benedict’s and Benedict Court.

• Musical DVDs, movies, or home videos

• CD or cassette players with music, books on tape, or old time radio program CDs

• Photo albums or laminated photos

• Large print playing cards

• Jumbo puzzle books

• Warm winter clothing, such as robes, winter apparel, or new slippers or non-skid socks

• Stationary, envelopes, and stamps

• Gift certificates for St. Ben’s Coffee Shop or the Beauty Shop

If you have ideas of your own that you are unsure of, please feel free to contact a nurse or social services for their suggestions. Please remember that if you bring apparel, it will need to be marked. Also, please keep in mind that gifts are recommended over gifts of food. However, if you do choose to bring in gifts of food items, please bring them to the unit nursing station so that they can be labeled and dated correctly.

philAnthropy - more thAn A tAx DeDuCtionPeople sometimes refer to their neighbor’s charitable contribution as just a tax write-off. But what they don’t understand is that the donation is a gift, not an exchange for a100% tax write-off.

It’s important to recognize the selfless giving by an individual, not as a self-benefit in the form of a tax deduction, but as an act of love. That’s not to say that giving is not self-satisfying. On the contrary, philanthropy can be one of the most self-satisfying acts a person can perform, because giving feels good.

And the amount of the gift is not as important as the

gift itself. In fact, those who have the least, make the greatest sacrifice.

Mother Teresa said, “If you give what you do not need, it isn’t giving.” That’s a good lesson in philanthropy.

For further information, please contact Jon Frantsvog at (701) 456-7242 or [email protected].

CulinAry CornerThe Culinary Services Department has been teaming up with the Activities Department to create some very interesting and fun activities for our residents. In June, they held a luau, with palm tree decorations, leis, shell painting, beach ball toss, and fun food such as fruit kabobs. They’ve also started having a weekly cocktail hour! Every Friday, many residents can be found in the Living Room, enjoying a fun non-alcoholic drink before supper starts at 5:00 p.m. Other fun activities have included:

• A “County Fair” with funnel cakes

• Sweet Corn on the Cob feed, where residents helped with husking corn

• Cookie of the month club, featuring a new cookie each month at snack time

• National cupcake day - residents and children decorated their own cupcakes

• High Tea with Mrs. North Dakota and other ND Royalty, complete with finger sandwiches, mini-cheesecakes, and cream puffs
