The spring play and final show of the 2015-2016 season, The Country Wife, features not just one, but three student designers. They were given the theme of “Modern Baroque” by director Christian Boy. Senior Theatre Art and Studio Art major Brenna Frost (‘16) designed the set for her Theatre senior thesis (model pictured center). Frost was excited for the opportunity to design a Mainstage show after her experiences working in the Scene Shop and Costume Shop, along with her classroom experience in the department. Christian Boy was incredibly influential during the process of designing as both a director, professor and mentor. Frost states, “He always encourages me to be better and to seek out knowledge.” Senior Communication Studies major Emily Laitinen (‘16) designed the sound for the “Modern Baroque” themed show. She explains that her designs were a challenge in combining both classical and techno music to modernize the sound, “It was very humbling because it was really difficult to set a classical tune to dubstep beat. Classical music does not like to be set to a specific beat per minute, which is exactly what a dubstep beat needs.” Junior Theatre Art, Heritage & Museum Studies and Classical Studies major Melissa Thurn (‘17) has designed every costume piece in the show (pictured upper and lower center), beginning her research last year: “Even though I knew we couldn’t have a period accurate show, I first started to research fashion from the late seventeenth century to understand what the silhouettes, colors, and fabrics were like as if we were actually setting the show in 1675. Then I turned my attention to translating these elements into a modern adaption.” Christian Boy, Steve Johnson, Katie Curry, and Bryan Duncan make up the professional faculty design team at Concordia. When asked who has been their most influential mentors through their time at Concordia, each of the student designers enthusiastically included all the names of the professional faculty. Coming Up for Concordia Theatre APO & SAGA Present the 3rd Annual Drag Show Fundraiser

Alpha Psi Omega hosted its 3rd Annual Drag Show on Saturday, March

12th in the Centrum. Student volunteers performed as drag kings or

queens and lip-synced to a song of their choice onstage.

When asked about his experience, first year student Sean Fee

(pictured left) said, “You would think you’d feel self conscious, but

it is completely exhilarating.” This was

his first time in drag, and he explained

that this experience provided him

with a newfound respect for drag

queens, “gluing down my eyebrows

took a good hour at least.”

Audience members enjoyed giving

tips to the performers while onstage.

All proceeds were donated to

Kaleidoscope, and over $700 was

raised for the organization.
