God’s Work, Our Hands
Inside this issue: Membership Expectations
I greet you in the name of the One who can do all things but fail!
A few years ago (before we changed the Constitution to the new direction of Congregation Council to a role of visionary), the then Congregation Council began a discussion about church membership. The question to be discussed was something like, “What does it mean to be an active member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church”. I can tell you for certain, it was a discussion that lasted several meetings. When it was all said and done, the Congregation Council agreed unanimously. A decision was also made to place the statement on the church website for all the world to see, especially people looking to become a part of Lord of Life. You’ve seen the following:
Members’ Expectations of Each Other
Members of this congregation embrace the Lord of Life Mission Statement
by making a covenant with God and with each other to follow God’s WORD,
WILL, and WAY faithfully.
• Worship Weekly
• Grow in Understanding God’s WORD, WILL & WAY through Scripture Study
• Actively Participate in the Ministries of the Church
• Thank God Through Financial Gifts (Strive to Tithe)
• Pray Daily
• Reach Out to Others in the Church and Community.
The majority of the above statement also appears each week in the weekly bulletins for both worship services.
This bold and powerful statement is first and foremost about mutual accountability! The definition of mutual is: “directed by each toward the other or the others”. And likewise, the definition of accountability is: “an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions”. These statements reflect the expectations we have of one another because we have them of ourselves first as individuals. And they are for all who hold membership in the organization known as Lord of Life Lutheran Church. They are not part-time, some time, when it feels right, when I have time, or when I feel like it. They are expectations!
I invite all members of LOLLC to spend some intentional time reflecting on the work of the then Congregation Council. There was no time line placed on these expectations. There was no trial period or testing period. They boldly proclaimed, “This is who we are”. How about you? Is this your understanding? Is this your expectation of yourself and therefore of others? The time to get on board is now. Jesus might say it this way, “The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a church……”.
In the name of Jesus, Pr. Skip

How to Spread the Word at Lord of Life
Do you have information, an event, or upcoming project to share with Lord of Life? Here
are some great ways to share your information.
Thursday E-blast and/or Sunday LeafLet: Email your information to Kelley Harbert
([email protected]) by 12:00 pm on Wednesday in order for your
information to be included in the upcoming E-blast and/or Sunday LeafLet.
Monthly Newsletter: Deadlines are usually 4-5 business days before the upcoming
monthly publication. Send finalized copy and photos to [email protected].
Pre-service Announcements: Email Jim Tarsi ([email protected]) and Denise
Sheehan ([email protected]) by 12:00 pm on Saturday, the day prior to be
announced. Please try to avoid telling them your announcement a few minutes before
the service begins. And also let them make all announcements when possible to keep
that time period concise on Sunday mornings.
On all submissions, remember, it is best to submit your information as early as possible
before the deadline to make sure they are included!
Be mindful, that the above communication avenues usually only reach Lord of Life
members. As disciples of God, who wish to reach out and be all inclusive, there needs to be
an invitation to others outside the church and in the community. If you wish to post on the
Lord of Life Facebook page, please send the item to Denise Sheehan. If you wish to
communicate items in Next Door to the community around Lord of Life, please email the
information to Kelley in the office. Remember that Lord of Life is an inviting congregation
and wishes to share all events, classes, celebrations and worship with anyone that wants to
share in God’s love and Word.

Christian Education Opportunities EDUCATION NEWS CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CONTINUES AT 9:30 AM ON SUNDAYS. Youth classes will meet in their usual
places. Adult Education will have 3 classes to choose from. Join us for Adult Sunday Education!!
ADULT OFFERINGS FOR FALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
BY HEART: AN EXPLORATION OF THE SMALL CATECHISM. This study will generate conversation about the biblical and historical context of the catechism, its link to the church’s faith, its connection to Luther’s life and your life today. Great for longtime Lutherans as well as those newer to the Lutheran faith. This class will meet in the Café.
For Women - BEFORE AMEN. Max Lucado explores the very heart of Biblical prayer by offering hope-filled prayers that will help you turn your heart towards the One who longs to speak with you. Prayer is the most necessary and most basic expression of our faith, yet we struggle to do it daily. We are not alone, make a point to join this group and open the doors of communication with our God. This class meets in the office conference room.
ENGAGING OTHERS, KNOWING OURSELVES: A LUTHERAN CALLING IN A MULTI-RELIGIOUS
WORLD. This book invites us all into conversation by challenging us to reflect on our past, learn from our present, and envision the future to which God is calling us. The heart of the book is the real-life case studies of inter-religious relations unfolding in a variety of ELCA ministry contexts. They encourage us to understand that our questions, doubts, and failures are as important as our answers, convictions, and successes. They challenge us to embrace that while there are a variety of responses to religious plurality, our common response is rooted in our Lutheran vocation – our response to God’s love in Jesus Christ. This class meets in the Sanctuary.
TUESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY continues its study of THE GOSPEL OF MARK. We gather each Tuesday evening, 6:30-8:00 p.m., in the café for prayer and study. The Gospel of Mark is the central focus of the gospel readings beginning with the new church year in Advent. Bring your Bible and join us!
THURSDAY MORNING STUDY GROUP - Meets at Target Store (Lakeline) snack area at 9:45am. Study: " Breaking Free From Fear ". Look forward to seeing you all. Praise the Lord! Marge Kretschmar [email protected]

PRAYER & HEALING SERVICE
The Worship Team was recently asked to look into holding Healing Services. We’ve received this request several times over the years and decided to move forward. Since this is a new type of service at Lord of Life, we wanted to give an explanation for why this is a part of our Christian life.
The ELW hymnal includes a service for Healing. Quoting from the ELW: “Here all who sense the need for God’s healing in any aspect of their lives may join in prayer for others and themselves. Here each person may come to receive a word of blessing and prayer. Here each one may also receive a physical gesture of healing: the laying on of hands, which may be accompanied by anointing with oil. These signs, first given in baptism, tell us again that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who is health and salvation for the whole world. In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific community nor does it promise a cure. Rather, the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and peace, and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.”
We will hold Healing Services quarterly – in January, April, July, and October – on the 3rd Sunday of the month either at 12:30 or 6:00. We will add a fellowship opportunity before or after all services. The services will be from Holden Prayers around the Cross.
In response to our survey, January and July will be at 12:30; April and October will be at 6:00. Our first service will be held on Sunday, October 15 at 6:00 PM.
We hope you will be able to join us and participate in this special service. If you have any questions, please contact Deb Grunska.

Please email or call the before Oct. 23. Include your name, the person’s name, and if it’s for remembrance for someone who has died r honoring as a saint.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
On Saturday, September 23rd
a team of Lord of Life volunteers participated with Habitat for Humanity in a repair project. It was a beautiful warm day with a few clouds in the morning. We had a great time as we worked side by side with a couple of other Texas work groups.
The home owner, Ms. Perez was thankful for the painting of her home. She has lived in her home for over 30 years and raised four beautiful children there. Her son arrived later and assisted with some of the painting.
Thank you to the participants: Denise Sheehan, Bryce Sheehan, Dick Fink, Deanna and Mike Brown, Rachel Brown, Mike Kamensky, James Longworth, Lorraine Baines and Felicia Wachsmann, and our lunch leader: Diane Saegert . It is because of all of you and your love for God’s Kingdom that this event was a huge success.

LORD OF LIFE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
September 21, 2017 6:30pm
Present: Dave Smith, Carol Gaskamp, Mark Waggoner, Pr. Skip Wachsmann; quorum is present
Vice-President Dave Smith called the meeting to order and opened with prayer and a devotion on forgiveness.
Minutes from the August meeting were accepted as distributed.
The focus of discerning prayer continues to be:
• Where is LOLLC to be in Five Years?
• What will LOLLC look like in Five Years?
• How do we get there?
Old Business
• Youth Ministry: Pr. Wachsmann updated the Council on work of the youth ministry.
• RRISD Community Work: Pr. Wachsmann reported that the program is going very well. One parent thanked him for providing a
safe place for her son.
• Stem Program Status: Pr. Wachsmann reported that the program is going well. Since the program is Monday-Thursday, the STEM
staff have agreed to set up the space for Sunday School at the end of the program on Thursday, and the Sunday School staff ready
the space for the STEM program after Sunday School on Sunday.
New Business
• Dave shared a Google map aerial view of the property, and discussed how such a map can be used to sketch out different uses of the
property. Pr. Wachsmann clarified the property boundaries on the map. Dave will work with his resources to get a more detailed
aerial view for the next council meeting.
• Church Financial Audit: Pr. Wachsmann shared the wording from the LOLLC constitution regarding the requirements for an annual
audit which also specifies the make-up of the audit committee, and specified that council appoints the audit committee. Council
agreed to appoint the finance committee to conduct an internal audit. Dave Smith will communicate this request to the Finance
Committee.
• Approve New Members: Council approved transfers of Pamela Campbell from King of Kings Lutheran Church (LCMS), Round
Rock, TX and Barbara Carter: transferred from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (LCMS), Cedar Park, TX (Gaskamp moved,
Waggoner seconded)
• Nominating Committee: Pr. Wachsmann shared the wording from the LOLLC constitution regarding the composition and
appointment of the nominating committee: 3 lay members with only one from the Council; Council appoints the committee. LOLLC
practice has been that the Council VP serves on the nominating committee. Dave will request Kelley to use the e-blast to begin
soliciting nominating committee members. Goal is to have the nominating committee appointed at the October Council meeting.
• Assessing the Past to Plan for the Future: Pr. Wachsmann shared materials from the 2013 ministry review, cottage meeting notes,
and Pr. Alan Watt’s Interim Pastor report for the Council to review as a starting point for affirming the vision the Council has for
LOLLC future. The group decided to hold a council retreat
in October without Pr. Wachsmann, to be facilitated by an
outside person, to further discuss LOLLC vision and
strategize how to lead the congregation into living that
future.
9/24/17: Ad hoc Council meeting following services, with quorum
present (Duarte, Smith, Waggoner, Gaskamp, Wachsmann). Met
in Executive session.
