Three Tips to Avoid Credit and Debit Card Skimming A Proactive Approach to Protect Your Card Credit and debit card skimming is a new method used to steal your card information. Once your information is obtained, criminals can make purchases with that card and access your accounts. Often, victims aren’t aware their information has been compromised until they review their monthly statements, a card transaction is declined, or an overdraft notification is received. Here are three ways to protect your card: 1) Monitor the Machine: Avoid ATMs at gas stations or restaurants, which are not regularly maintained, opting instead for machines at financial institutions. Additionally, if the card reader moves when you insert the card, if the security seal is broken, or if the reader sticks out past the panel, don’t use the machine. 2) Protect Your PIN: Do not give your PIN to anyone and always cover your PIN sequence with your hand at ATMs. Without your PIN, criminals cannot access your checking account. Even if you don’t see anything suspicious at the ATM, use discretion. Tiny recording devices can be strategically placed to record your PIN, so protecting it is a good precautionary method at all ATMs, including those at financial institutions. 3) Scan Your Statements: Besides reviewing your monthly statements, regularly access your account transactions online. If you notice anything unusual, notify the financial institution immediately. The sooner the company is aware of the activity, the sooner the funds can be returned to your account. Simple awareness of card skimming, as well as the above steps, are effective methods to decrease the likelihood that you’ll become a victim of the crime. If you detect unknown activity on your Integrity FCU account contact us immediately. If you have any other questions about card skimming, give us a call.
