3BRYN TERFEL & LISA McCUNE SING BROADWAY CLASSICS

Welcome to this special concert featuring two of musical theatre’s shining stars: the great Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel and Australia’s beloved Lisa McCune.

For Bryn, who is returning to the MSO for a mini-residency, after his triumph in Wagner and Beethoven in 2013, this concert displays his virtuosity as a performer of musicals. Tonight will be very different from Bryn’s forthcoming MSO appearance, as Méphistophèlés in Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust.

For Lisa, who has recently been celebrated for her roles in South Pacific and The King and I, there is the chance to sing other great numbers from Broadway or London’s West End.

We also welcome back another virtuoso, conductor Bramwell Tovey. He is indeed as adept at crossover as he is at communicating his vast knowledge to audiences all over the world. Later this year, Bramwell returns to conduct Handel’s Messiah – a work as far removed from the bright lights of theatreland as can be imagined.

If versatility is the gift of Bryn, Lisa and Bramwell, it is also crucial to the existence of any major orchestra. We have always been an orchestra that can adapt to the varying demands of the classical repertoire and the classics of film and stage. In each case, this is music that requires not only technical skill, but music that must be performed with respect and with love.

As we get ready to experience an extraordinary night of music, I would especially like to thank our valued partner, Arts Centre Melbourne for their important support in presenting this performance.

Enjoy tonight’s concert.

André Gremillet Managing Director, MSO

Arts Centre Melbourne is pleased to be able to join with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, our wonderful Hamer Hall resident company, to be able to co-present this performance featuring Bryn Terfel and Lisa McCune

The fine musicians of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra have always excelled in programs which take them away from their regular repertoire of orchestral masterpieces and tonight’s crossover program will be no exception, with superb orchestrations designed to make the most of the skills this fine ensemble.

As always Arts Centre Melbourne strives to present the best performances with the finest musicians and artists in our wonderful Hamer Hall.

We are especially thrilled to welcome back Bryn Terfel and Lisa McCune, who have both appeared on Arts Centre Melbourne stages before. Tonight they unite their individual personalities and their considerable talents to create a truly special partnership and take us on a journey through some of the finest Broadway Classics.

We look forward to future collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the opportunity to excite our audiences and bring this world-class venue to life.

I hope you enjoy the concert.

Claire Spencer Chief Executive Officer, Arts Centre Melbourne

Established in 1906, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has earned a reputation for excellence, versatility, and innovation. It currently performs live to more than 200,000 people annually, in concerts ranging from subscription series at Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne, to annual free concerts at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Sir Andrew Davis gave his inaugural concerts as Chief Conductor in April 2013, having made his debut with the Orchestra in 2009. Highlights of his tenure have included collaborations with artists such as Bryn Terfel, Emanuel Ax, and Truls Mørk, recordings of music by Percy Grainger and Sir Eugene Goossens, a 2014 European Festivals tour, and a multi-year cycle of Mahler’s symphonies.

The Orchestra works regularly with its Principal Guest Conductor, Diego Matheuz, Associate Conductor, Benjamin Northey, the MSO Chorus, and with guest conductors such as Thomas Adès, John Adams, Tan Dun, Jakub Hrůša, Markus Stenz, and Simone Young, as well as non-classical musicians such as Burt Bacharach, Ben Folds, Nick Cave, Sting, and Tim Minchin.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is funded principally by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, and is generously supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Her leading lady performances in stage productions have firmly cemented her as one of Australia’s greatest musical theatre assets. Lisa most recently starred in the Opera Australia and Gordon Frost Organisation production of The King and I. Her performance as Anna Leonowens earned her a Helpmann Award nomination for Best Female Actor in a Musical. Amongst her many roles, Lisa starred as Maria in the 1999 Gordon Frost production of The Sound of Music which she followed with her Green Room Award-winning performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret and the Sydney and Melbourne seasons of Guys and Dolls. Lisa recently starred on stage in Opera Australia’s South Pacific, with her performance as Nellie Forbush earning her a Sydney Theatre Award and Green Room Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.

Bryn Terfel bass-baritone

The Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel made his operatic debut as Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) for Welsh National Opera, and has since performed at La Monnaie, Santa Fe Opera, the BBC Proms, La Scala, Royal Opera House, Metropolitan Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera. Highlights in 2015 include his debut in the role of Tevye (Fiddler on the Roof) for Grange Park Opera, the title role in Sweeney Todd for English National Opera, and Méphistophélès in The Damnation of Faust for Paris Opera and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

He is known for his versatility as a concert performer, with highlights including the opening ceremony of the Wales Millennium Centre, the BBC Last Night of the Proms, the Royal Variety Performance and a gala concert with Andrea Bocelli in Central Park, New York. For nine years he has hosted his own music festival in Faenol, North Wales.

Bryn Terfel is a Grammy, Classical Brit and Gramophone Award winner. In 2003 he was made a CBE for services to opera, and in 2006 was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music.

Enriching the city’s cultural fabric, inspiring local audiences and contributing significantly to the artistic development of our own musicians through our ability to engage internationally-renowned artists remains a core priority for MSO.

In consultation with existing MSO champions and with the support of Creative Partnerships Australia’s Plus1 program, MSO has recently announced an exciting new philanthropic community of women looking to bring significant, high-profile international artists to Melbourne.

“MSO Roses has been developed to empower the many influential patrons who have expressed their desire to make a difference and play a key role in the artistic mission of the MSO by becoming involved as independent philanthropists”, says Jenny Brukner, valued MSO supporter and inaugural MSO Rose.

In 2015, legendary soprano Renée Fleming has been nominated as the first MSO Roses funded artist. Renée will be our guest of honour at a VIP event for our MSO Roses while in Melbourne in September for her only orchestral appearance in Australia. Hailed as one of most beloved and celebrated musical ambassadors of our time and one of the world’s most in-demand and sought-after artists, Renée’s appearance with MSO is indeed a coup for both the Orchestra and Melbourne.

Providing like-minded philanthropists with an opportunity to come together socially at MSO concerts and special MSO Roses events, the annual MSO Roses contribution of $5,000 (includes $500 membership plus a tax-deductible donation of $4,500) entitles you to two places at each specially organised MSO Roses event, and an additional range of exclusive rehearsal and

behind-the-scenes experiences across the year.

For further enquiries, please contact Ben Lee on (03) 9626 1248 or at [email protected]

A Rose by any other name…New initiative, MSO Roses empowers philanthropic

women who share a passion for orchestral music, a love for the MSO and the desire to make a difference.

MSO Roses is generously supported by Creative Partnerships Australia’s Plus1 program - all MSO Roses donations received by 29 May, 2015 will be matched by Creative Partnerships Australia.
