■ If its walls could talk, what talescould they tell of the romantic encoun-ters consummated within the centu-ries-old bosoms of Venice’s HotelDanieli – a grand hostelry created bybringing together no less than threeone-time, side-by-palaces.

Few of us do not know of one ofthe most famous of these love stories,that of Greek shipping tycoon AristotleOnassis and opera’s Maria Callas,brought together at a party organisedat the Danieli by American gossipcolumnist and party-guru, Elsa Max-well in 1957.

And while Onassis was nearly twodecades her senior, and both of themwere married,

Onassis immediately began show-ering Maria with attention. But it wastwo years before he made an auda-cious move: he invited the singer tojoin him on his luxury yacht for a threeweek’s cruise of Greece and Turkey… taking along his own wife, and in-viting Maria to bring along her hus-band.

To the horror of their spouses andother guests also on board, Onassispurposely did little to hide his feelingstowards Maria, and somewhere intothe second week she admitted to “fall-ing head over heels in love,” confess-ing that she and Ari had consummatedtheir love aboard the yacht.

And bizarrely, Onassis asked Cal-las’ husband if he would agree to adivorce, so that he and Maria couldmarry.

When that marriage did come

With its $10 price-tag its worthconsidering by the case, particularlyas its showing plenty of potential tocellar well through until 2016 or so; orenjoy now with that rack of lamb, beefand Guinness pie or even aged sirlointopped with a chimichurri sauce.

What had begun as a romantic en-counter between millionaire and op-era star in the Hotel Danieli had de-generated into soap opera. But it wasn’t the only grand emo-tional entanglement woven into thehistory of the Hotel Danieli, that hadoriginally been built as those three pal-aces in the 1400s by the flamboyantDandolo family – themselves noslouches when it came to partying.

In fact hotel records include anentry: “today, tAugust 28, 1498, hasarrived the Prince of Salerno... a mostbrilliant reception was given, greatfestas held in his honour, and his suiteof forty-four persons lodged in thePalazzo Dandolo...”

In 1805 hotelier Giuseppe Dal Nielrented the palaces and converted theminto a hotel, giving it his nicknameDanieli, and later acquiring the build-ings outright.

Many of the original sweeping stair-cases, saloons and some apartmentsoriginally created by Dal Niel and oth-ers before him have been preservedto this day, as well as stuccoes andfrescoes from the 16th and 17th cen-turies and portraits and heraldic shieldsof the Dandolo families.

And it was in one of those apart-ments, now the Hotel Danieli’s Room10, that another famous – or infamousdepending on your point of view –couple once frolicked.

The French writer George Sandwhose real name was AmantineLucile Dupin, married into high soci-ety by way of the Baron CasimirDudevant, but quickly scandalisedthat society by regularly dressing as aman – and, horror of horrors, smok-ing tobacco in public.

After quarrelling over behaviourthat her husband saw as not befittingthat of an upper-class lady, GeorgeSand walked out and moved to Pariswhere she soon ignited more scandalby becoming the lover of aristocrat,novelist and poet, Alfred De Musset.

The two decided to leave Paris,and being unable to decide betweenRome and Venice, tossed a coin.Venice it was.
