Executive summary

Beauty and personal care continues to grow in 2015Beauty and personal care in Australia witnessed moderate growth in 2015, with the strongest-performing categories being sun care, skin care and colour cosmetics. Value sales have been driven by constant new product innovations and the demand for niche and premium beauty and personal care brands, which are seen as aspirational and highly effective. Premium beauty has been supported by the arrival of Sephora in 2014, with the beauty specialist retailer now operating three stores in the country. Within the mass price segment, a high level of discounting continues to hamper value growth, with strong competition among supermarkets, discount pharmacies and discounters.

Social media influences beauty and personal careSocial media has a strong influence on beauty and personal care in Australia, with consumers, particularly from the younger generation, increasingly living their lives online. Social media acts as a cost-effective, brand-building tool for companies, allowing them to increase brand-awareness, share beauty tips and announce new product launches. Many companies have built a strong base of social media followers, supporting growth and encouraging brand loyalty. Social media is impacting consumer behaviour, with consumers frequently sharing their product experiences and looking to achieve the perfect and flawless look in images they share. An obsession with image and a desire to look photo-ready at all times has led to manufacturers launching products targeting this trend.

Procter & Gamble to merge with CotyBeauty and personal care in Australia is dominated by international players including Procter & Gamble Australia Pty Ltd, L’Oréal Australia Pty Ltd, Unilever Australia Ltd and Colgate-Palmolive Pty Ltd, which benefit from having strong portfolios of well-established brands and economies of scale. In 2015, Procter & Gamble and Coty Australia Pty Ltd entered into an agreement to incorporate the former’s fine fragrances, colour cosmetics and hair care business in Coty in a transaction worth approximately US$12.5 billion, with the changes to be effective from the second half of 2016. The transaction will see Coty enhance its value share in these categories and have a stronger standing in overall beauty and personal care in Australia.

Natural and active ingredients feature in NPDSManufacturers were active in new product developments in 2015, with new launches crucial to maintain consumer interest in the highly competitive market. Natural ingredients continue to feature strongly in new launches, as well as products featuring active ingredients and products for sensitive skin. The “selfie” trend is resulting in consumers looking for products to give them a flawless finish, with manufacturers launching products with features such as blurring, airbrushed and flawless finish.

Beauty and personal care to be driven by new innovations and claimsThe forecast period performance of beauty and personal care is expected to be driven by innovation, with new products to feature breakthrough claims, multi-functionality and new delivery formats. Furthermore, an ageing population will support growth in beauty and personal care as consumers look to maintain a youthful appearance through high-quality beauty brands. Competition is expected to intensify over the forecast period, as beauty specialist retailers continue to expand in presence, supporting growth among niche and premium brands. Discounter Aldi may gain share in the mass segment as it looks to expand in South Australia and Western Australia.http://www.euromonitor.com/beauty-and-personal-care-in-australia/report

NUMERACY

Complete the following questions. You can use a calculator or write down your workings in this booklet.

8. You want to buy some new office equipment for your salon. You need the following items (costs are provided below):

Multifunction printer $399

New computer $899

Monitor $259

Cordless telephone and answering machine with two handsets $210

How much will all of these items cost?

9. You are thinking about putting the items on interest free. You can currently purchase these items and have 24 months interest free. Assuming a $5 a month account fee, how much money would you need to put aside each month to ensure the debt is paid prior to the 24 months’ interest-free period expires? Round up to the nearest 10 (ie $50, $60, $70 etc).

10. If you do not pay the debt before the 24 months are up, you will accrue a 21% interest rate on the outstanding amount. Imagine that you pay off most of the amount but have $310 left after the interest-free period expires. How much interest will be added to this balance and how much will you then need to pay back?

How many appointments can you fit into your day?

12. On Tuesday morning, your 1.30 client calls and asks if you can shorten their appointment to 45 minutes as they have had something unexpected come up in the late afternoon.

Your 2.30 client had already cancelled their appointment. You decide to call your 3.30 client to see if they would like to come straight after your 1.30 client. They are happy to come earlier. What time will this client arrive?

13. You decide that you will leave early and go pick up some supplies. You will need 30 minutes to clean up the workplace before you leave. What is the earliest time you will be able to leave the salon, if your client’s appointment takes a full hour?

14. It will take you around 25 minutes to get to the supplier. They close at 5pm. How much time will you have to get your things before they close (assuming you leave at the time you noted in part b)?
