What is HDV?• HDV is a new video format that records High Definition

pictures onto a standard DV tape media, offering significant enhancements over the DV format on which it is based.

• HDV is a convenient and cost-effective step up to the benefits of High Definition acquisition, providing an ideal migration path from DVCAM for videographers, independent film- makers, corporate and other professional users.

• Offering simple connectivity via i. LINK, HDV is the perfect partner for a variety of PC-based non-linear editing solutions from Sony and other vendors.

HDV – Format Positioning•What is Sony HDV?

• Sony HDV camcorders and VTRs record 1080 line resolution. They feature an on-board downconverter, allowing output of either HD or SD signals for seamless integration into any existing production infrastructure.

• Sony is able to offer HDV/DVCAM/DV recording and playback on the same HDV camcorder or VTR.

• The size and weight is comparable with DVCAM, making Sony HDV products compact and easy to use.

Page 6: Mel Medina Senior Product Marketing Manager Professional Video Broadcast Production Systems Division Sony Electronics

HDV – Format Positioning• Entry level HD (High Definition) solution

• HDV format is positioned different from (lower than) HDCAM• Picture Quality, Performance, Price range• Easy to incorporate HDV into an HDCAM environment via an external

converter.

• HD quality as added value onto current DVCAM• HDV products are positioned as the top end of the current DVCAM line-up• SD to HD easy migration is offered with sufficient flexibilities

• HDV / DVCAM / DV switchable recording• Built-in down conversion from HD to SD• Utilizes existing DV cassette media• Utilizes existing i.LINK (IEEE1394) based infrastructure
