Shindō Musō-ryū (神道夢想流) is most
commonly known by its practice of jodo, is
a traditional school of the Japanese
martial art of jojutsu, or the art of wielding
the short staff. The technical purpose of
the art is to learn how to defeat a
swordsman in combat using the jō, with
an emphasis on proper combative
distance, timing and concentration. The
system includes teachings of other
weapon systems which are contained in
Shintō Musō-ryū as auxiliary arts (Fuzoku
ryuha).
Araki Ryu has been described as grappling with weapons. The tech-niques of the ryu employ similar principles as in Greco-Roman wrestling: speed, flexibility and explosive force.
Toda-ha Buko-ryu is a martial tradition which specializes in the use of the naginata. Its highest teachings center around the kagitsuki naginata, a weapon with a small cross-bar, against both sword and spear.
Takamura ha Shindo Yoshin ryu (高村派新道楊心流) is a sogo bujutsu or comprehensive martial art founded by Kuroda Clan retainer, Matsuoka Katsunosuke. The Shindō Yōshin-ryū syllabus is heavily influenced by two different lines of Yōshin-ryū, the Akiyama Yōshin-ryū (Tenjin Shin'yō-ryū) and Nakamura Yōshin Koryu (Totsuka ha Yōshin-ryū). Its weapons syllabus is descended from Hokushin Itto ryu, Jikishinkage ryu and Matsuzaki Shinkage ryu. Shindō Yōshin-ryū waza generally emphasizes evasive tactics expressed with very high levels of speed and precision.
