Mehendi Designs - traditional to contemporary

Since times immemorial mehendi or henna has been symbolic of fertility and denotes the love between the couple and their families. It is considered auspicious, preventive-medicinal and customary for brides in India to have it on. Gayatri’s wedding was no exception, amongst the many pre wedding events was the traditional henna ceremony. Along with the lively ambience of her house, celebratory music had filled the air. Folk songs and Bollywood music befitting the occasion had everyone on their toes minus the clapping, obviously! Then of course, the spotlight was on the professional mehendi artists who kept working their magic on the guests as well as the women of the house.

Variety of heena styles have always been popular with women. So her family, friends, neighbours too were selecting from the usual famous, intricate, feminine, alluring, pretty designs like the peacock, florals, paisleys, leaves, vines, geometric shapes – lines, circular, chequered, gods, doli, ambis, dulha-dulhan, all celebrating the rich Indian cultural practice. From simple borders to elaborate applications from fingers till elbow and from feet to knees, it was all about living it up while wishing happy married life to the couple getting into holy matrimony.

Spoilt with choices between the Indian, Arabic and African styles, there were huge variety of delicate, contemporary and fusion designs on every lady’s hands. Some proved to be more experimental than the others and got embellishments to further decorate the ornamental patterns, few even went through the albums to opt for colourful alluring artistic samples - complete with stones and glitter. Last but not the least was the special moment when Gayatri got Rajesh’s initials inked on her palm. It was integrated seamlessly into the design so that when the latter searched for it, it would be anything but a cakewalk!
