What is the GPS Compliance Requirement?

The United States Postal Service has announced the new GPS data requirement that will be incorporated into the postal network highway contract routes. The requirement may be retroactively applied to existing contracts as an addendum. You may be receiving the PS Form 7406 with the specific language of the requirement which must be signed and returned to the USPS by September 10th. The addendum is binding. The USPS is targeting November 15th, 2010 for network wide implementation across all affected contracts.

What does it mean to contractors?

Contractors must acquire and implement a GPS on-board system on their vehicles or GPS capable phone solution. Either solution must be capable of generating a compliant stream of data that is automatically transmitted to the USPS web services. Not every GPS system will comply with the requirements and if you have an existing system, please check with the USPS if it is on the list of certified solutions.
