Welcome to the second Institute on Higher Education Admission and Guidance, the culmination of a collaborative effort between EARCOS and the Council of Inter-national Schools (CIS). We are pleased to jointly host this new regional Asia/Pacific event. It was great last year and we know it will be a great gathering again!

This Institute is designed to connect the school and higher education communities for purposeful dialogue and networking, to enhance your knowledge of leading practices, to guide and support international students as they explore and choose their paths in higher education. We expect that you will find your time here to be well spent. Thanks to the CIS and EARCOS teams, especially the support of Joe Petrone with EARCOS, Willemijn Nieuwenhuys of CIS, and the planning committee which includes Aleka Bilan (Jakarta Intercultural School), Shaun McElroy (Shanghai American School), Jennifer Melton (International School Bangkok), Mary Adams (Pennsylvania State Uni-versity), and Jennifer Mathews (Syracuse University). And of course, we are indebted to our respective office staffs that provide support from Manila and Leiden.

We are thrilled to have over 150 universities and over 120 counselors with us, ex-ceeding our goal. The Institute will be offered annually in the future, and we hope that it continues to grow. The workshops include university admissions topics as well as issues faced by our schools across the Asia/Pacific region. None of this would be possible without the contributions of our presenters and we hope that this year’s presenters will inspire you to submit session proposals for our 2017 Institute.

Thanks to our many volunteers and to the Shangri-La for its hospitality and ser-vice in support of our students, families and schools in the region. On behalf of the EARCOS and CIS Boards and our respective members, thank you for joining us at this EARCOS-CIS Institute on Higher Education and Admission. We hope you will leave energized by what you’ve learned and the relationships you’ve built.

Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan or Wat Arun (Thai pronun-ciation: [wát arun], “Temple of Dawn”) is a Buddhist temple (wat) in Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, Thailand, on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The temple derives its name from the Hindu god Aruna, often personi-fied as the radiations of the rising sun. Wat Arun is among the best known of Thailand’s landmarks and the first light of the morning reflects off the surface of the temple with pearly iridescence. Although the temple had existed since at least the seventeenth century, its distinctive prang (spires) were built in the early nineteenth century during the reign of King Rama II.

The panelists will share tips for success and common pitfalls in both models.

FRANKO CIFIZZARI, Head of Counseling Department, Western Academy of Beijing CHAIRMAN’S ROOMANNE CORRIVEAU, Senior Associate Director, Boston UniversityUnderstanding the IB Courses: For Admissions and CounselorsThis session is designed to help admissions better understand the specifics of the IB diploma and courses and provide advice for counselors with contextualizing the student’s curriculum. Topics include: Explaining how DT, ITGS, TOK, Self-taught, and Film courses should be viewed. Examining and interpreting the differences between Language Levels in Groups 1 and 2, math levels, what ‘40 points’ actually means, the significance of bilingual diplomas, and ‘expected’ IB grades. For counselors, the focus will be on how they can help univer-sities (and students) by putting into context the students’ program, teaching, and course selection.

MARION INES KINDER, Associate Director of Admissions, Nagoya University CORUNDUMMARIKO WATANABE, Globalization Office, University of TokyoNavigating Through the Japanese Admissions JungleJapanese universities have tremendously changed their approach to doing international admissions. This session will showcase these changes in a broad overview, while mainly highlighting the uniqueness of Japanese universities. While many Japanese universities adopt a centralized written entrance exam for local students, most universities still have their own requirements and approach when it comes to international admissions. This can be very confusing to applicants and their counselors. Although academic achievements are a priority, extra-curricular activities, essays and recommendation letters still play a vital role in the overall evalua-tion process. Interviews bring together both components and therefore are critical to the selection process.
