Own Backyard The Hardwood Federation is proud

to be your representative in Washington, D.C. and one of my favorite parts of the job is communicating to federal officials about all the fantastic things the industry

does for their communities, the national economy and the environment. We are on Capitol Hill every day...even when Members of Congress are back in their home states and districts, there are still plenty of staff to educate and persuade. The Sept. 12-14 Fly-In is an opportunity for the Hardwood Federation to demonstrate the strength and diversity of the hardwood sector. Please consider attending! You can get more information on our web site.

Although not everyone can attend, there are ways that you can advocate in the place where you spend most of your time...at your own company!

A few weeks ago, a good friend of the Federation sent me an article about Jack Haessly of Haessly Hardwood Lumber Company in Reno, Ohio. Mr. Haessly invited U.S. Senator Rob Portman to visit his business...and the Senator accepted, stopping by on Thursday June 1 for a visit with Mr. Haessly and the 75 people he employs.

Elected officials at all levels welcome the opportunity to meet their constituents and learn more about the people and the businesses in their states and districts. This is also a wonderful way to educate those that have

a tremendous amount of information coming at them every day. The sounds, smells and activity of a saw mill stay with you...and will be recalled long after the visit is finished. Note that the Senator referenced his visit several more times during his June tour of Ohio and will no doubt continue to do so both at home in Ohio and in Washington.

I know a number of other hardwood businesses also work closely with their political representatives and are making a difference in the way policy impacting the sector is made. But the more the merrier...and the more impactful...so I encourage anyone with pride in their operations (which is pretty much everyone from my experience over the last five years) to think about following the Haessly lead and inviting your Senator or Congressman (state or federal) to personally witness the great work you do every day.

Now is the time! Members of Congress will be on their August recess soon and most will be crisscrossing their states looking for opportunities to meet with constituents and generate positive press. This is also the perfect time to make your thoughts and concerns clear to those who vote on the policies that have significant and far-reaching impacts.

The Hardwood Federation can help with advice for hosting such a visit, helping you make connections with federal offices, provide talking points and answer any questions you may have.

Outlook

Sources on the West Coast are reporting a steady and predictable market for their hardwood lumber products.

Winter was slow to exit the Northern California region according to one salesman who works at a large distributor. He said some years the weather just doesn’t cooperate and the snow made it hard to meet deadlines for shipments into Canada. His best selling species right now are poplar, maple, and cherry, with alder and oak following right behind.

A source in Oregon says he has seen steady prices so far in 2017. Their distribution hasn’t seen much change from 2016. Spring market was similar to 2016 and as the weather warms up it is getting busier.

One Washington contact says that a lot of his customers were cautious as the year started because they weren’t sure how things would play out in the first few months. It’s started to pick up and his millwork customers are currently buying a lot of poplar and white oak.

Some Highlights:• According to a new report from the World Bank, the

global economy is strengthening, rebounding from recent challenges and assisted by better manufacturing and export data. It sees worldwide GDP growing 2.7 percent and 2.9 percent and 2.2 percent growth in 2017 ad 2018, respectively, up from 1.6 percent in 2016. Canadian manufacturing grew strongly in May despite pulling back from a six-year high in April.

• Mexican activity rebounded slightly in May but remained subpar.

• Chinese manufacturing activity contracted for the first time in 11 months.

• Japanese manufacturing continued to expand modestly in May.

• Manufacturing activity in the emerging markets expanded at its weakest pace in May since September.

- excerpted from Moultray, Chad, Ph.D.,DBE. “Global Manufacturing Economic Update - June 8, 2017.” | NAM. National Association of Manufacturers.

• In the United states, manufacturing activity remained bright, even as some reports indicate a slowing in growth from earlier in the year.

• The National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported that existing home sales rose 1.1 percent in May. Activity increased in every region of the country in May except for the Midwest. In addition, sales grew for both single-family and condo/co-op units. In terms of inventories, there were 4.2 months, up from April. NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun described how levels continue to remain low overall, saying “Listings in the affordable price range are scarce, homes are coming off the market at an extremely fast pace, and the prevalence of multiple offers in some markets are pushing prices higher.” The median price for an existing home sold in May was $252,800. - excerpted from Moultray, Chad, Ph.D.,DBE. “Monday Economic Report - June 26, 2017”| NAM. News

Rural Oregon counties have been struggling financially for years due to a lack of forestry jobs and federal timber revenue. Now, a recently approved building could herald a new age for the Northwest timber industry.

It all centers around a relatively new building solution called “cross laminated timber”, or CLT.

According to a Seattle Business report, CLT is a part of a broader category of engineered wood products called

“mass timber.”CLT panels are made

from layers of wood that are glued together in a pattern perpendicular to the next, up to more than a foot thick. This results in an extremely strong and stiff material that rivals that of steel or concrete.

The panels are catching the eyes of Northwest lawmakers, who say CLT manufacturing can not only create a sustainable building solution, it can create jobs and help prevent out of

control wildfires by reducing fuels. The unique thing about CLT is it can be manufactured

from trees with diameters as small as 4 inches, well under what is typically harvested for building use. The technique can even use dead trees. Thin trees are currently too uneconomical to be harvested and forest managers often don’t have the money to clear the thickets that can clog forests and create a fire hazard.

Washington Senator Maria Cantwell recently sent a letter to President Donald Trump addressing the benefits of CLT.

“Scientists have found that using forest products in building construction could help markedly lower carbon in the atmosphere because of how sequestered carbon is stored for decades in wooden buildings,” Sen. Cantwell wrote. “Fortunately, slowing carbon emissions can go hand in hand with creating jobs in rural areas that need them.”

Framework interior (Image courtesy of LEVER Architecture.)

Sen. Cantwell isn’t the only one who sees a potential with innovative timber products.

A bi-partisan group of politicians recently introduced the Timber Innovation Act.

The bill would help drive innovation, research and development to advance tall wood building in the United States, as CLT has the potential to replace steel in high-rise buildings. The method is well illustrated by a 14-story wood apartment building in Norway called “The Tree.”

The legislation would also work to retrofit existing facilities such a lumber yards and mills in area of high unemployment to spur job creation.

The first company in the U.S. to receive certification to manufacture CLT panels is D.R. Johnson Wood Innovations & CLT based in Roseburg, OR. - Staff, Newsroom. “Could this building signal a reboot of Oregon’s timber industry?” KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2. N.p., 06 June 2017. Web. 14 June 2017.

Which is Best: Clearcut, Diameter-limit or Selective Cutting? To be clear, forest management has never been a one-size-fits-all proposition. Clearcutting favors early successional species and works well where there are ample seed sources or sufficiently established understory regeneration. Single-tree selection favors shade-tolerant species, can be used to guide forest composition and increase timber quality, and became the public’s preferred system after environmentalism took off in the early 1970s. And, there were and are lots of other practices between these two extremes designed to capture the benefits and minimize the downsides of each. - excerpted from Meyer, Dan. “Which is Best: Clearcut, Diameter-limit or Selective Cutting?” Hardwood Review Express 16 (9 June 2017): n. pag.

According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), the United States exported $8.8 billion of total forest products in 2016, slightly above 2015 totals, but 9% below the record $9.7 billion set in 2014. Among U.S. agricultural exports, only oilseeds and products; horticultural products; grains and feeds; and livestock and meats had higher export totals in 2016.

Notable in 2016, however, was that China overtook Canada as the top forest products export market, by value, for the second time on record (also in 2014),

Framework (courtesy of LEVER Architecture.)

The nation’s tallest wooden high-rise will soon take shape in Portland, Oregon. Funded by a $1.5 million-dollar award from the U.S. Tall Wood Building Prize Competition, the innovative timber building, named Framework, will be built from domestically sourced and engineered wood products. LEVER Architecture designed the mixed-use high-rise as a beacon of sustainability with its use of low-carbon materials, green roof, and resilient design. Framework, which is expected to complete construction in late 2018, will likely be the nation’s first timber high-rise building with wood from the ground-floor as well as the first with exposed wood in North America. The building is also expected to use significantly less energy than a traditional building of similar size and function with energy savings of 60 percent when compared to code and water savings exceeding 30 percent compared to code. Framework is also expected to result in 1,824 tons of carbon dioxide emission offsets, equivalent to taking 348 cars off the road for a year. - Wang, Lucy. “Nation’s tallest timber building to rise in Portland.” Inhabitat Green Design Innovation Architecture Green Building. due primarily to growth in hardwood lumber, but also to rising hardwood and softwood log shipments. Additionally, U.S. hardwood lumber exports accounted for 26% of total forest products exports in 2016, up from 23% in 2015. - excerpted from Burbeck, Tony. “U.S. Forest Product Export Values in 2016” Hardwood Review Express 16 (16 June 2017): n. pag.

Re-introduced by Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-AR), the Resilient Federal Forest Act of 2017 (H.R. 2936) is a comprehensive bill streamlining NEPA and providing

emergency fire funds. Expanding upon provisions from the 2014 Farm Bill, the bipartisan bill provides new categorical exclusions to the Forest Service, reduces unnecessary NEPA and ESA bureaucracy for a wide variety of projects, and gives the Forest Service access to emergency fire suppression

funds. It also includes an innovative pilot program to test binding arbitration as an alternative to costly litigation, and provides authorization for 16 and 17 year olds to work in family run logging businesses.

Extend Your Vision When Moving Fast Yesterday afternoon I met with Jim Merryman, CEO

of Oregon Freeze Dry. OFD, as they are now known, is a 53-year-old, 500 employee, food processing company with their headquarters in Albany, OR. OFD enjoys an almost never heard of 70+% market share of their adventure meals, Mountain House.

At precisely 1:30pm, Mr. Merryman's Executive Assistant, Becky, met me at the front desk and took me into Jim's office. Jim greeted me warmly. He openly told me about his leadership team and the strategic planning training program the company sent 75 of their leaders through this past year. He told me how the company is shifting from supplying commodity ingredients for other companies to making their own Mountain House brand their first priority. This decision was a major departure from the strategy they have followed for over 40-years. His 5-legged stool marketing strategy is designed to ensure that when one market is down, the other four legs will support the enterprise's growth and success. Their new "in-house products first" strategy has been so successful that they are now building a second operation in upper New York to accommodate their growth and be closer to priority customers.

Jim told me his belief in training and education is an extension of his ongoing personal development. Jim has an

unusual hobby of driving NASCARs that he equips and tunes himself. Driving at 120 MPH it seems natural to look down

at the road just ahead. Through coaching to be a better driver, he has learned to look out over the hood, far down the road. He said 'I thought I was looking well ahead, like the average golfer

thinks they have great follow through.' His coach helped him see how he was limiting his vision.

I seldom meet company owners who understand the importance of "looking out over the hood," who understand that success requires their sight extend beyond this quarter, this year, or even this decade. For most managers, the development of people for the long-term success of the enterprise is a distant second to the emergencies and urgent demands of the moment. They

don't seem to understand that the development and growth of their leadership team is essential for them to enjoy the checkered flag and take the winning lap season

after season.At 2:10pm Jim said,

"Larry, I want to continue this conversation when we meet again and look forward to our leader's involvement in Turbo's Leadership Development

Lab. I must go to my 2:15pm appointment now. I meet all new hires personally, from floor sweeper to quality assurance chemists. A new employee meeting is my next appointment." We rode down on the elevator together and said our goodbyes.

Wow! I wish you could hear all the excuses I have heard for not getting out on the floor, visiting job sites, meeting and connecting with all the players on the team.

I left this meeting knowing I had been with a truly engaging leader.
