Meeting new people from the community is kind of our thing. Favorite new restaurant? Let us know. We love trying new places. Have a charity or fund-raising event or block party coming up? Call us. We’ll get the word out.

Future issues will highlight this community’s local history, architectural landmarks, schools, business profiles and more. Remember, this is your own custom magazine, so we welcome your contributions, ideas, and encourage your participation.

Willett Travel, a Frosch Travel Company, may be the oldest business in Studio City, but with professionals like Tama Holve in action, the firm still has its finger on the pulse of the diverse travel needs

of local leisure travelers and professionals. Holve has been in action as a sales consultant since 1978, and purchased the agency with a partner in 1987.

Based on the goal of always doing what was in the best interest of their clients, Willett Travel grew from a staff of 9 to 65 since its founding in 1943, helping WWII veterans get transportation home after their service. It ultimately became the largest woman-owned company in the San Fernando Valley.

“I initially enjoyed the other jobs I held, but eventually tired of them,” recalls Holve. “However, when I entered the bustling travel industry, I found ‘boring’ and ‘travel’ were simply impossible words to meld! The world is constantly changing, and above all, my work is like solving a puzzle. It’s difficult at times, but with the client’s appreciation fueling the process…the feeling of accomplishment is incredibly rewarding.”Holve affirms that she prefers a long term relationship with a client rather than a one-off project. To accomplish this, she is honest with the client in advising him on when to spend less money, when to invest more money, and planning the best itinerary for the specific locale being visited. A trip, under her watchful eye, should be about the value received, not the money spent. Even in an era where it’s assumed that the internet is displacing travel agencies, she insists there is no substitute for a travel agent who adds personalized input to the trip planning process.“If you’re so inclined, research travel possibilities online to see what’s of interest to you, noting pricing and inclusions,” she suggests. “However, before you purchase, seek out a professional travel consultant for advice. You really have nothing to lose and a world of possible gains. The fact is that the people who travel the most are still using our services, and travel agencies still issue 70 percent of airline tickets!” “Another way of putting it is that (online businesses) will sell you anything, and whomever is on the other end won’t care if it really fits you or not, or if the fabric isn’t the quality it appears to be online. In other words, we won’t sell you just anything,” she continues. We want your trip to be the right fit, and have you as a client for life.”Holve suggests compiling your bucket list of places in the world they wish to see, and plan trips to places furthest and toughest on your body first. “One never knows how our bodies may change. Longer plane flights and rougher roads may get more difficult to endure with time. Our bodies may grow less tolerant of lumpy beds. For these reasons, you shouldn’t put off things for too long,” she says, adding, “Some of my favorite trips are backpacking in the High Sierras and sleeping on the ground, but I also treasure gorgeous hotels in great cities. There’s a time and place for everything.”Holve also argues it is never too early to get children to cultivate their own passion for travel.

“My favorite childhood memories include annual driving trips to Catlin, Illinois, summer camping and one train trip to San Francisco. We’ve travelled with our children, and continue the family tradition with our grandchildren. This helps them became more understanding of others, and more resilient in challenging situations because they had these experiences out of their comfort zone. I’ve often said that they’ll remember those trips more than they would a new chair in the living room.”Holve, who has been married to husband and fellow Valley native Greg (who practices dentistry in Valley Village) for 46 years, definitely passed their love of travel to their adult children Taylor, in Santa Barbara, and Vanessa, who lives in San Diego.

Holve encourages families to disconnect from the norm and explore life outside of their usual surroundings. “Unplug from the world online and introduce your children to experiences that challenge them physically, intellectually and socially,” she advises. “Think about what you did with your parents when you traveled with them as a child.” Here are tips to ensure the road ahead is a smooth one:• The little ones might need “time outs,” or a blanket on the floor of a

restaurant to fall asleep early.• If older children whine, remind them they are making memories, and tell

them about your own experiences traveling with your parents.• Don’t plan sightseeing family vacations with younger children at the same

pace you’d go without them. • Go for a comfortable combination of what’s familiar and what’s new when

traveling with children. Look into renting beautiful condo on the beach, having familiar breakfast food in the fridge, and an easy convenient place for them to nap while you read overlooking the ocean.

• To keep your finances in check, consider all-inclusive resorts, cruises, trains, or tours to avoid unexpected expenses. A week-long vacation to an exotic tropical island can cost less than Disneyland!

• Pack little surprises (such as games, puzzles, treats and toys) as rewards on a plane flight…one per hour for behaving well! For more information on how to plan the perfect summertime family or couples’ getaway, contact Tama Holve or her team at [email protected] or 800-994-5538.

While some goals take a lot of hard work, other opportunities that can change your life are those you run into when you’re not looking for them. In the era of

online dating, Danny and Marissa Seeman met each other at a bar in Manhattan Beach. Years later, when walking with Danny’s brother and sister in law, they stumbled into and fell in love with a property on Longridge Ave in Sherman Oaks they would buy four years after that day.

“What I like about Sherman Oaks is that there is a great balance between city life and suburban life,” muses Danny. “There is walkability, restaurants and stores that are independently owned and unique, as well as a lot of city amenities without heavy traffic and other inconveniences. We often walk around the hills near our home a lot as a family on the weekend, or go to nearby parks like Beeman.”

The couple also has learned through the years that the right mix of stability and serendipity can make for a rich, fulfilling family life. It can also help a family deal with whatever curves life throws at them.

Danny, an L.A. native, who came of age in Northridge and went to USC, continues to operate his family’s European car parts manufacturing business with his brother. His late father and grandparents proved to be excellent role models of ingenuity and perseverance.

“My father was an avid car collector and enthusiast, and saw the need to manufacture parts that were not widely available. He started getting things made in Asia, and it went from there,” Danny says. “My grandparents were Holocaust survivors, moving to New York from Amsterdam with my father, who was three months old at the time. They later moved across the country to Denver, San Jose, and L.A.”

Danny’s grandmother is a particular source of pride for the couple, as her resilience and can-do attitude constantly inspires them.

“My grandma is 95 and lives at the Jewish Home over on Reseda and Victory,” he says. “As she worked with my father throughout the years, she got into different aspects of the automotive parts business. She still likes to be involved, so my brother and I bring her to the office every Monday, where she files and does other things around the office to stay sharp.”

Marissa, a native of Portland, Oregon, came out to Los Angeles

Listening To Their Hearts

after graduating from the University of Arizona with a BA covering entrepreneurship and marketing. Though she did not have a set career in mind, she managed to build one

anyone would envy. Her first job was in media

representation with Katz Media Group. Knowing

she had a passion for events combined with her marketing

background, she left Katz and went into event marketing, coordinating events for Fortune 500 companies like AT&T, Home Depot and Frito Lay.

She then went into business development and marketing for TheKnot.com, a wedding web site company where she helped retailers like Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Macy’s increase their online wedding registry business. She then moved over to email marketing at Cheetahmail. As a Client Partner, Marissa, worked with Foot Locker and SuperValue to optimize sales via their online marketing channels.

After Marissa gave birth to Raegan, now 4, she whole-heartedly embraced her role as full-time mom. However, after the birth of second child Carter two years ago, her life would change in unforeseen ways. Today she’s a budding and passionate activist for families affected by the Cytomegalovirus or CMV. After Carter did not pass his first post-natal hearing tests, the couple brought him to various institutions across the city (including UCLA, Children’s Hospital, USC and the John Tracy Clinic) for further tests to determine what caused Carter’s moderate hearing loss and global developmental delays.

“When Carter was four months old, I took him to UCLA for a follow-up ABR test to see if there were any changes in Carter’s hearing loss,” she recalls. “I didn’t expect for there to be any changes, but the worst case scenario became our reality. Carter’s brain was not responding to sounds as loud as an airplane engine. His hearing had progressed and he was now completely deaf. I called Danny, distraught and frightened about Carter’s future. Within 30 minutes, he called me back after exhaustive web research. He found out I may have contracted a virus called Cytomegalovirus when I was pregnant, which may have caused Carter’s hearing loss.”

Once another test results confirmed CMV was the cause, and it may have spread through bodily fluids during Marissa’s pregnancy, the couple set out to learn everything they could about it.

“What’s unique about Carter’s situation is that he was born asymptomatic,” she explains. “So he wasn’t tested for CMV despite it being the leading non-genetic cause of hearing loss. If he had, we could

of given him an antiviral drug to lessen the severity of his hearing loss and stop it from attacking his brain. CMV is often spread from a young child’s saliva or urine to a pregnant mother. If I had known about the risks of CMV while pregnant, I would of taken precautions with my toddler. I also would of asked to be tested, which is a simple blood test. Though I will never know the exact cause, I am committed to speaking with physicians, state agencies and expectant mothers to encourage screenings for CMV during pregnancy and immediately after birth.”

Today, Carter goes to eight therapy sessions a week to help improve his mobility and his ability to communicate with his family and the outside world. Marissa is not only grateful for the support from other families living in the community, but also the therapists, medical professionals and other special-needs moms whom she credits for helping her realize the strength she did not know she had.

“We love Carter for who he is today, and not for the possibility of what he will achieve in the future,” Marissa affirms. “For example, we strongly believe in teaching Carter sign and spoken language and allowing him to choose which language he wants to use, or a combination of both.”

In addition to raising both their children in the Jewish tradition, Danny and Marissa also believe in immersing the entire family in all the wonderful things Sherman Oaks and the Valley have to offer families, including the recent CicLAvia event.

They are also encouraging Raegan to participate in a variety of sports, signing her up for gymnastics classes at L.A. Valley College and swimming at the Jim Herrick Swim School. While she excels in her classes at Sunnyside Preschool, her teachers have let Marissa and Danny know their doors will be open to Carter.

“Sunnyside Preschool is not a public special education preschool that is required to meet Carter’s needs, but they want to support him anyway possible to make it the right fit. That’s exactly what I love about our community. Knowing that your son with disabilities is welcome with open arms into a safe, loving, creative environment is priceless.”

Fall may be a ways off, but the Seemans are already looking ahead to October, where Marissa can strut her event planning prowess for annual Halloween bash their neighbors will enjoy. It’s an elaborate undertaking, where the 10-20 invited families will dress up, bring their wagons, walk around the neighborhood and return to the Seeman home for a major monster mash. Danny, meanwhile, is already gearing up the family for a July 4th trip to San Diego that will involve friends, fun, BBQ and of course, lots of swimming.

wwa daily goal that they all work hard to achieve. Having the right person in each post and making sure that each one is on the same page with her philosophy produces a working environment that is productive, smooth, peaceful, positive, dynamic, and energetic.

Perhaps part of Dr. Cory’s success as a dental practitioner can be traced back to her upbringing. She grew up in a loving family

and was encouraged by her parents, through their examples, to make her mark in the world by serving others. Thus, early on in life, the values of family and service are already inculcated in her. Apart from having the right heart for her profession, she also makes sure that she keeps herself updated with innovations and trends in the field of dentistry. Going beyond the yearly required 50 continuing education units, she clocks in an average of 200 units!

Dr. Cory’s successful dental practice is complemented by a happy family life. She loves traveling with her family and immersing in diverse cultures. They have been all over the United States, as well as in different countries in Asia and Europe. She has a daughter, named Barbara, who is her pride and joy. This simple science experiment is a fun way to get your children learning about how things work.

HOW DOES IT WORK?Energy is created by the balloon forcing the air out. This then creates a motion called thrust that pushes the balloon forward. In a real rocket, thrust is created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rocket’s engine – as the engines blast down, the rocket goes up.

WHAT YOU NEED• Balloon• Long piece of string (about three yards)• Drinking straw• Masking tape• Clothes pin (optional)

HOW TO MAKE YOUR ROCKET • First, thread the string through the straw.

• Next, either hook your piece of string across a large archway using the two hooks, or rig it up between two chairs. It works best if one end of the string is higher than the other.

• Blow up the balloon but don’t tie it off, just hold it pinched shut. Even better use a clothespin

• Without letting the balloon deflate, tape it to the straw on the string.

• Slide the straw and balloon up to the high end of the string.

• Let go and watch your balloon rocket shoot to the end of the string!

It’s not too late to join the summertime fun. Check out these great activities for kids and teens.

handed with my phone while my other hand was holding a basting brush. So believe me when I tell you that if they look this amazing in an un-doctored picture, then you can only imagine how crazy good they actually were.

There is no such thing as a quick and easy meat recipe – that’s just the facts – so if you are looking for a 10 minute quick rib, you’re in the wrong spot. But truly great meat (like most things in life) lives under the rule “You get out of it what you put into it.” Summertime is here and life’s pace slows down a little. Take the extra time and work some grilling magic for your friends and family. You’ll never want restaurant ribs again!

**I used boneless pork ribs that I trimmed of excess fat on the outside edges – and were approximately 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick. If you are using bone-in ribs, or the cuts of meat are thinner – adjust your grilling time accordingly.**

Brine: Put your (5-6) boneless pork ribs in a large Ziploc bag and add 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons salt and 1 tablespoon sugar. Let them sit in the fridge in the brine mixture for 4-5 hours.

Rub: Remove the ribs from the fridge and bag, rinse them and pat them dry. In a small bowl mix the rub: 1/4 cup coarse sea salt, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons smoked paprika, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 2 teaspoons ground pepper, 2 teaspoons onion powder, 1 teaspoon ground mustard, 1 teaspoon cumin and 1 teaspoon ground ginger. (This makes a large batch – so you’ll have plenty made up already for next time.) Coat all sides of the ribs with ample rub. Let them rest for 10 minutes while you start the grill on high heat and make the BBQ sauce.

BBQ Sauce: In a small bowl mix together: 1 cup of ketchup, 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 2-1/2 tablespoons brown sugar, 2-1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon ground mustard, 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice and 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Set aside 1 cup for basting – the rest will be for serving with the ribs.

Grill: With the grill on high and hot, grill the ribs for 2 minutes on each side to sear them. Drop the temp to medium (around 375-400°F) and grill them for 20 more minutes, flipping them every 5 minutes.

When internal temp reaches 150-160°F, they are done. Baste them on both sides, grill for an additional 4 minutes (basting them again at the 2-minute mark) and then again at the end.
