Practice Education Facilitators
Welcome!
Hello everyone
My name is Clare Marie Dickson
and I would like to welcome you
to the first edition of the
Practice Education News. I have
recently taken up post as the
Practice Education Co-
ordinator and am both hugely excited and
privileged to be leading the team as nurse
education undergoes one of the most significant
changes in recent years. Nursing and Midwifery
practice is very different from practice a decade
ago and we know it is set to change even further
in the next ten years and beyond. It is crucial that
nurses are equipped to deliver high quality, safe
and effective care and that relies on the education
& training they receive. The NMC is currently re-
viewing the Education Framework which proposes
a new model for supporting students in practice. It
is anticipated that this will be implemented in
2018. We will have more information about this in
future newsletters. In the meantime, may I take
this opportunity on behalf of the team to thank
you all for your ongoing support & for the
significant contribution you make to the student
learning experience.

My journey from Health Care Assistant to Mental Health Staff Nurse
“Beginning study with the Open University (OU) was a daunting time for me,
not only had I made the decision to progress in my career and commit to four
years of study, I was also returning to education after many years away from
it. In the first few weeks of commencing pre registration nursing, it became
clear that I had no need to worry. An abundance of support was available
from day one. From module and practice tutors to mentors and colleagues,
everyone seemed more than happy to offer support and guidance. The
module materials were plentiful and easy to understand and there was
constant access to online forums where students from all over the UK could
communicate. Tutors were also accessible via phone/e-mail at any time. These
resources were invaluable to me throughout my training.
Choosing the OU route allowed me to remain an employee of the Trust. My
managers were supportive of my new role as a student nurse and willingly
released me to complete placements and avail of study leave. This method of
study provided me with opportunities for continuous learning even while I
was not on placement, as well as providing financial stability.
Throughout my time as a student nurse I was able to apply the fundamental
skill I had obtained as a Health Care assistant (HCA) and build upon them.
Although there were challenging times, I am grateful to have been given this
opportunity. I have been in a band 5 Staff Nurse post for almost a year now
and recently attended the OU graduation ceremony (see above).
I urge anyone working as a HCA who is interested in developing their skills
and progressing in their career to consider applying for the OU pre
registration nursing programme. It is a flexible way to study and offers those
already working in the field an opportunity for professional development!”
Good luck! Charlotte Jess - Staff Nurse

The Practice Education Team in partnership with local universities has just facilitated the Autumn 2017
Mentorship Preparation Programme. 55 trainee mentors from across South Eastern Trust attended the
three day programme and will submit their portfolios of evidence in early January. The skills education &
training of all mentors is of vital importance in ensuring that practice placements for nursing and
midwifery students provide rich, high quality learning. As well as providing support and guidance to
students in the practice area, a mentor has the unique opportunity to role model professional values and
behaviours and to instil professional integrity. Every nurse, in line with the NMC Code (2015), is required
to support students and colleagues learning to help them develop their professional competence and
confidence.
What did our trainee mentors have to say:
“Study days were very informative and PEFs were knowledgeable
and approachable”
“Good change of pace between topics, teaching was excellent!”
“I really valued learning how to identify & support
underperforming students and avail of all the support networks.”

SEHSCT launched its first Midwifery Careers Day programme on the 14th November 2017 for students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) and seventeen local schools. This was a new initiative to
support work experience and future workforce planning. The students had the opportunity to experience
„A Day in the Life of a Midwife‟ and engage in practical skills such as abdominal palpation & basic life
support. Students also had the opportunity to engage with and inform the production of the first
interactive Midwifery Careers E-Magazine and meet with a range of professionals from practice, education
& the volunteer service. The success of this event will inspire future events for all fields of nursing!!
What Did Students Say?
“The careers day helped me understand how I as an
individual, in the future, could care for pregnant women
with compassion, patience, love & gentleness.”
(Friends School, Lisburn)
“The chance to ask questions has given me a clearer
mind-set for my future plans, and to hear the answers to
other questions I hadn't even thought to ask was
informative also.” (SERC)
“Many thanks for arranging this midwifery information
day. I can confidently say that it was beneficial to each
and every one of us attending.” (SERC)

of Midwifery, Zoe Boreland (far left) and several of
the midwifery team leaders.
A comprehensive overview of all clinical areas was
provided followed by a tour of the Maternity Unit by
Melanie McMechan. Feedback from students was
extremely positive regarding the warm welcome
they received and they look forward to spending
their next 3 years in South Eastern Trust!!

Home From Home’s Annual Visit from
University College Dublin Midwifery Student
What Did Students Say?
“I would like to thank all the midwives in Home
from Home for the amazing opportunity to work
with and learn from all of them. I was very lucky to
be selected for this elective placement, I think all
student midwives should have a similar opportunity
as it really made a huge difference to my vision of
midwifery. Home from Home really makes a
difference to women in labour and their birthing
experience which is unique and beautiful”
(Tanae Salvetti, UCD)
“I just want to thank everyone involved for allowing
me to experience a midwifery–led unit in action. A
special thank you to Katherine Robinson and all her
staff at home from home for making me feel so
welcome and feel part of their team. “
(Francesco Redmond, UCD)
