April, May and summer 2015

Meet the New President

Floyd Lawrence

Floyd hails from Newport, Maine – way up

there. He and his wife Jean moved to Florida in

2004. Jean and Floyd currently spend 6 months in

Maine and 6 months in Florida. Floyd had a career

in architecture, leading a team of draftsman for the

construction of buildings. Floyd and Jean had 2

children. Their daughter is a second grade teacher

in Maine and has one son. Floyd and Jean’s son

passed away 3 years ago.

Floyd had painted in oils for 40 years. He

studied art part time at the University of Maine and

took several workshops. In Fort Myers, checking

out the area for watercolor classes, Floyd stopped

by FMBAA and talked with some of the people

who were in the Gallery. They were very nice and

welcoming. He said “….I decided that maybe it

would be a good fit for me. I have enjoyed the

people and the time that I have spent at the gallery”.

His favorite teacher is Neil Walling. Floyd says he

likes the way the watercolors mix and work

together.

Floyd has served on the FMBAA board since 2011.

Floyd has just one objective for his presidency – to

have FUN. He welcomes volunteers and let Floyd

know your suggestions.

It’s Picnic Time at FMBAA - April 2nd

Come to the Potluck & Annual Mtg.

Chair Sharon Hegstrom and her committee are

preparing picnic fare: grilled hamburgers and

bratwurst prepared by chef George Buelow.

Hamburgers, bratwurst, condiment, coleslaw and

lemonade will be provided. Sign up to bring an

appetizer, dessert or baked beans. Don’t forget to

bring your plates and silverware. BYOB. The cost

will be $5.00 per person. Come for apps and drinks

at 5 pm. Dinner will be served at 6 pm. Be sure to

sign up in the gallery or call 463-3909. We need an

accurate count for setting up the tables.

“Clean-up” for these events is a piece of cake as

everyone is so willing to stay and pitch in. Thank

you all for doing that. It is so amazing that in a

matter of minutes there is nothing left to take down

or put away. We are looking forward to our picnic,

which is always a sign of spring in the air, and after

many weeks of cool weather this year, this is such a

welcome change.

Juror’s Statement: What a wonderful diverse

collection of paintings make up the Winter Juried

on originality of concept and design organization.

The visually exciting page always calls my eye and

perhaps the painting that looks like it was fun to

paint impresses me. Thank you to all who

participated. It was truly an honor to be asked to

serve as this year’s judge.

Famous Artist Workshops 2015-2016 Fort Myers Beach Art Association, PO Box 2159, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33932 www.fortmyersbeachart.com

Libit Jones “Addicted to Texture”

WATERCOLOR, FLUID ACRYLICS and GOUCHE (all levels)

November 16-18, 2015 (3 days) Having no preconceived idea of what you will eventually paint is kind of scary but this technique is so fun you can forget your fears. Libit will show you how to use bold strokes, splattering, running paint, texturing tools and water or alcohol to create a colorful sheet of paper. Once the paint is dry, you will utilize negative or positive painting and glazing to use your underpainting to your advantage. A process of endless possibilities of realistic, impressionistic and abstract paintings. The 3 day workshop will cover yupo, watercolor paper and hot pressed paper as this technique can be done on a variety of papers. Libit has been exploring using textures in her paintings for several years. She believes a positive attitude combined with adventuristic spirit will carry you through anything. Libit says, “We will be busy but we will have fun”. She is a popular instructor well-known along the sun coast of Florida. She is a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society and is currently the President. Fees $220 members, $250 non-members. Demo on Sunday November 15 at 4-6 pm Coordinator: Carol Bertino 239-466-9783. Email: [email protected]

Lynn Ferris “Capturing the Light”

WATERCOLOR (all levels) January 25-28, 2016 (4 days) Lynn’s workshop is designed to bring your work to the next level. It’s open to all levels, but some experience with watercolor is helpful. Learning good use of light and shadow can turn your paintings from ordinary to extraordinary. Using a limited palette of mainly transparent colors and a variety of subject matter, students will learn about shadows, light sources, adding glow and drama, and designing with light. Lynn provides handouts, reference materials, and lots of personal attention!! Lynn is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. She has been awarded the top award at the FWCS and also the “Societies Award” Fees: $295 members, $325 non-members. Demo on Sunday January 24 at 4-6 pm Coordinator: Nancy Randall 239-765-6381. Email: [email protected]

Neil Walling “Painting with Inspiration with Oils”

OIL (all levels) February 22-25, 2016 (4 days) Learn how to develop a strong foundation and then build upon it to create paintings that fulfill your creative vision. The workshop will begin with a fundamental understanding of the “tools” that an oil painter has at their disposal. Neil will help you understand the following aspects of creating an oil painting: Drawing, Composition, Value, Color and Execution. He will cover both studio and plein air painting and will demonstrate with at least two completed paintings. Neil is a popular instructor here in Florida and in Michigan and has won numerous awards for his paintings, has authored many art books. He has organized and coordinated plein air journeys to places in the US and abroad. Fees $255 members, $285 non-members. Demo on Sunday, February 21 at 4-6 pm. Coordinator: Kay Cowan (239-210-6888).
