Course Overview and Objectives

The Cambridge Primary English curriculum is presented in five content areas. Phonics, Spelling and Vocabulary and Grammar and Punctuation are about the use of English. Grammar and Punctuation is further divided into Reading and Writing to reflect the different ways in which grammar and punctuation are applied in each of these skills. Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening are about developing thinking skills and encouraging intellectual engagement. This curriculum aims to enable learners to communicate confidently and effectively and to develop critical skills in order to respond to a range of information, media and texts with enjoyment and understanding. General Information

Home Reading Programme Students will make a weekly trip to the library. They will be allowed to borrow a maximum of 3 library books. Students are expected to read these and complete the Home Reading Log diligently before the submission days. Parents are expected to sign the log before the next library visit. Reading log is completed once per week. Weekly Spelling Students will review the spelling lists in class. However, parents should review and assist the child at home in order to gain mastery of the words. Homework/Projects Students must complete all given tasks promptly and to the best of their ability. While parents are encouraged to participate in some home activities, the child should be empowered and trusted to complete work independently. General Information • All tests, quiz papers, worksheets and other practice papers must be filed. • Homework should be done and submitted on time. The teacher will give homework at least twice

a week. Homework should be done at home for at least 45 minutes. Homework not submitted on time will be penalized.

• Test papers will be sent home to be signed by parents and/or guardian. • Students are allowed to bring their files and books home every day, if they wish to do so. • Tutorial class will be given to students who need it the most. Students who will join the extra

class will be determined before Week 4.

For Primary Science at ACS Jakarta we follow the Cambridge Primary Science Curriculum.

The Books used are: My Pals are Here! Science 3rd Edition, Marshall Cavendish Publications, Primary 3 & 4, Cycles, Systems, and Energy (textbooks and workbooks), and Work-out book Topics not covered in the textbooks will be supplemented.

Assessment: The students are continuously assessed throughout the year through various forms for assessments. The Continuous Assessment (CA) breakdown is as follows: Topic tests – 60% Class work – 10 % Projects and experiments – 20% Homework – 10% Internal Examinations We have two exams at the end of each semester. The breakdown for which is as follows: Semester 1 Exam – 40% Semester 2 Exam – 60% The exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 – 45 minutes and 50 marks Paper 2 – 45 minutes and 50 marks The exams will cover portions from both Grade 3 and Grade 4 syllabi. General Information

Ø Homework not submitted on time will be penalised. Parents are notified through student’s diary. Ø Tests and graded worksheets will be sent home to be signed by parents. Ø The students are required to file their papers in the science file using the clear holder. The file will be

checked and graded periodically. Ø The students are allowed to bring their files and books home everyday, if they wish to do so. Ø If required, the student will be asked to stay back for a science tutorial class, tentatively on

every Monday from 2.30 to 3.10. Students absent for a valid reason are also welcome to clarify their doubts or seek explanation during a science tutorial session. A note will be sent home in the diary to inform the parents about the tutorial class.

Ø Keep all science books and files until the end of the academic year as students need these all the way up to Grade 6. These also serve as their references in preparation for their Science exams for the coming grade levels.

Course Objectives: Listening skills: Students should be able to interpret directions, descriptions, announcements, and messages. Speaking skills: Students should be able to deliver messages and announcements, explain how to use or make some tools, read poetry, participate in a conversation and verbal descriptions. Reading skills: Students should be able to read and understand instructions, conversations, maps, letters, announcements, and identify main ideas and main sentences. Writing skills: Students should be able to: write conversations; write instructions; write a descriptive sentence and a descriptive paragraph; write informal letters; and complete sentences in paragraphs. Class groupings The class groupings in 2016/17 are the same as the previous year. Indonesian A is a class intended for the advanced or intermediate students who have well developed skills and have practiced the language as their mother tongue or have used the language for many years. Indonesian B is a class for the students who rarely speak the language, are only exposed to basic daily vocabulary, understand oral instructions better than written instructions, find difficulty comprehending more complex words, forming complex sentences, and comprehend longer reading passages. These two groups above will have a slight difference in the syllabus aimed for what is best for our students. Indonesian Foundation is a class intended for foreign students who have no or very little knowledge of the language. Textbook Bahasa IndonesiaKelas IV SD: (tba). Additional teaching materials will be provided as worksheets. Indonesian Foundation classes will not require any textbooks. This was provided by the school in

Grade 3. New folders may be brought from the school shop if it is missing or broken. New students will get one from the teacher for free.

• Students must prepare their own stationary, textbook, notebook, green folder, and diary before class starts.

• Only black or blue pen is used for writing (sometimes pencil is still permitted). • Diary is expected to be checked regularly by parents for correspondence and homework. • Homework must be submitted on time, otherwise some marks will be deducted accordingly. • Only speak Bahasa Indonesia during Indonesian class at all times. . • Provide green pen for peer-marking or self-marking. No red pen is allowed to be used.

Course Overview and Objectives Welcome to the 4th Grade. The Inquiry Learning (IL) course aims to develop life skills that will equip your childto deal effectively with the demands of school and the challenges of life. IL focuses on expanding their critical thinking capabilities, teamwork, diligence, and resiliencein diverse academic topics with an emphasis on well thought out projects. The topics that will be explored in Grade 4 IL include:

- Learn to Live and Live to Learn (How humans learn) - A Place for Everyone (Weather and climate issues) - Let’s not say Goodbye (Endangered Animals) - Off the Drawing Board (Inventions and Technology) - The Power of the Pen (Media communications), and - Living in Indonesia (Exploring Java).

Topics covered within the year shall be supplemented with materials from a variety of sources.The students are continually assessed throughout the year through various forms of assessments. The assessment breakdown is as follows: Formative assessment (class work / homework) – 20% Summative assessment (projects) – 50% Quizzes – 30% Requirements:

Subject Overview and Objectives Communication is becoming an increasing part of the school environment, whether it is to perform in a school production, share an experience with peers during Show and Tell or communicate feelings or ideas to others. To give students the confidence to become confident communicators, Speech and Communication offers students a chance to study how to communicate more effectively. This subject takes an in-depth look at the skills that effective communicators must possess and how communication can be used to shape the environment in which they live in: politics, culture and society. Lessons are designed to enhance verbal and non-verbal communication as well as develop techniques to inform, persuade or debate. Students will analyze and critique print and non-print materials and embark on varied modes of independent and collaborative projects throughout the year. Assessments

Grade 4 Mandarin has 3 different levels: Foundation, Standard, and Advanced. It is a non-core subject held at the same time as Speech and Communication. Students opting for Mandarin will attend lessons 5 periods per week. Textbooks used for the 3 levels are: Foundation Level: Chinese Made Easy for Kids Book 2B and 3A Textbook (Simplified Version) by Yamin Ma, published by Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd. Standard Level: Chinese Made Easy for Kids Book 3B and 4A Textbook (Simplified Version) by Yamin Ma, published by Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd. Advanced Level: Chinese Made Easy for Kids Book 4 Textbook (Simplified Version) by Yamin Ma, published by Joint Publishing (H.K.) Co., Ltd. Assessment and Internal Examination Dictations, quizzes, tests, homework and class work are conducted or given periodically throughout the year to measure students’ understanding and language ability. In the report, Continuous Assessment (CA) and Semestral Assessment (SA) is written in grades, not in marks. The Continuous Assessment (CA) breakdown is as follows: Test & quiz — 60% Class work — 24 % Homework — 16% An exam is held at the end of each semester. The exam consists of an oral exam and a written exam. The oral exam is usually conducted during lesson time, but students may be required to stay after school to complete it, if necessary. Things to bring to class: Stationery Textbook Diary Folder General information • Please check your child’s assignment and test schedule in the diary that is signed by his/her

respective Mandarin teacher. You will receive the schedule at the beginning of each quarter. You may keep this at home as reference.

• Homework is given on a weekly basis. Students must submit the homework on time. Consequences such as lines and/or snack/after school detention will occur should a student fail to meet the deadline. However, if a student is not able to submit due to absence for a valid reason and parents give formal notice, extension of the submission date may be granted. The same procedure applies to tests.

• Afolder is used to file all homework, notes, handouts, test papers, etc. This folder will be distributed to students periodically and parents must sign the assignment and test papers that have been marked. Students must not lose their folders. If student loses his/her folder, he/she needs to purchase a folder with the same color at his/her own expense.

• Please do not throw away textbooks used from previous years as they are all connected and will be beneficial for your child’s continuous study.

Course Description: The grade 4 religion (Islam) is aimed at building on knowledge, faith, and the love for God and the prophets. Special emphasis is placed on instilling into the minds of students the basic tenets of Islam, namely, the Pillars of Faith (Rukun Iman), belief in angels and the special day, Idul Adha ( qurban ). In this class students will learn how to do purification and thaharah properly and memorise what to recite during those activities. Students will also learn the kinds of rukun, sunah, legal requirements of shalat and the things that nullified the shalat.
