Spring Issue 2017 MEET THE BOARD WARREN LONG – CHAIR, NBT BOARD OF DIRECTORS A little over six years ago, I read an article by Dr. Chris Kuehl comparing demographics in Mexico to those here in the States where it is stated “the average age of a fully qualified welder in the U.S. is now 63.” For me, it was a call to action. Manufacturing has been a fun and gratifying career that has provided for my family and me. Getting others to excite their own passion in making things has become a passion of mine. Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs ® (NBT) has provided me an outlet to do just that. Since its inception, NBT has awarded over $800,000 in scholarships to individuals pursuing manufacturing related education. It has funded over 200 summer camps that have exposed thousands of students and their parents to the joys of manufacturing. In 2016, NBT funded 35 scholarships, supported 39 summer camps and received a record number of grant applications – that bodes well for 2017. In fact, 2017 funded and affiliate camps are expected to grow from 39 this past year to 62. To maintain that growth, we need your help. Work with your local technical schools and other manufacturers to bring a summer manufacturing camp to your community. There are wonderful resources available at nutsandboltsfoundation.org/camps and the staff is always eager to help. Already have a camp in your area? Please reach out to see how you can get engaged. I guarantee that once you have seen the excitement on students’ faces, you will be hooked. Thank you to our generous donors, scholarship reviewers, camp directors, and camp mentors. You are fulfilling NBT’s core purpose to help individuals discover the passion for making things. By getting students excited about their futures in manufacturing we can directly address the skills gap and secure American manufacturing for the next generation. YOUR DONATIONS HELP AWARD MORE SCHOLARSHIPS IN 2017Every year NBT collects donations to award scholarships to students who pursue careers in manufacturing. Many of these scholarships are awarded to students who are attending two-year programs at community colleges or technical schools. These motivated students complete their studies in a few years and get started early in a highly-skilled, desirable career, often with minimum debt, if any.

Spring 2017 semester scholarship winners are: * John Grossheim Memorial (OPC) Scholarship Winners ** U. K. Gupta Family Scholarship Winner

Scholarship applications are being accepted now through March 31 for the fall 2017 semester at nbtfoundation.org/scholarships. Priority consideration is given to FMA members, employees of member companies and their dependents, and students attending Certified Education Center (CEC) member schools.

TEAMS PUSHED #GIVE2NBT TOWARDS GOAL

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Summer Manufacturing Camp for Kids fundraiser! You helped raise $3,200 to fund additional summer camps in 2017. This campaign was a team effort and a social media blitz. Donors could participate in three ways:

1. Simply by giving online at crowdrise.com/nutsandbolts

2. By forming a team and raising funds for their team

3. Joining a team and donating to the cause

Please continue to share, tweet, post, email, and talk about how important it is to show the younger generation the exciting advances in manufacturing.

See all of the results at crowdrise.com/nutsandbolts.

STUDENTS EXPLORE CAREER OPTIONS AT FABTECH®

NBT gave past scholarship winners an opportunity to apply for a travel grant to attend the industry’s largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event. The grants provided an opportunity for deserving students to visit FABTECH® 2016 which was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center Nov. 16-18. There are not many places in the world where such a variety of technologies are on display all under one roof.

At FABTECH, students get the chance to spend the day talking to the machine manufacturers, sit in educational sessions, see the latest industry products and developments, and learn about all of the options and possibilities a degree in the manufacturing industry can offer — it really brings their studies to life!

After submitting an essay to apply, three candidates were selected for this exclusive opportunity. A $750 grant was

awarded to each of the recipients to help cover travel, hotel, and other expenses during their stays in Las Vegas. Meet the award winners:

Ryan Henderson is attending Penn State and majoring in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. He attended the ‘Benefits of Deburring and Leveling in Today’s Manufacturing Environment’ session at FABTECH. Catch the interview

with Ryan and Dave Pettigrew, General Manager of Coilplus – Alabama and NBT Board Member at nutsandboltsfoundation.org/rhenderson.

Oscar Molina attends Stanford University and majors in Mechanical Engineering. He attended the ‘Structural Fabrication Technology’ FABTECH Conference session.

Eurydice Kanimba is also a Mechanical Engineering student and attends Virginia Tech. She attended the ‘Design and 3D Merging Technologies for Additive Manufacturing’ session during FABTECH.

Congratulations to these students for having the foresight and initiative to plan for their future and take advantage of the opportunities given to them.

SILENT AUCTION PROCEEDS SUPPORT NBT’S MISSIONTake the opportunity to support a student who wants to learn about the fascinating advances in manufacturing by donating an item to the annual silent auction.

Your item will be on display at the FMA Annual Meeting in New Orleans during the welcome reception on March 8. Consider donating

a company-manufactured item, a gift basket, golf clubs or foursome registration, jewelry, power tools, autographed sports memorabilia, tech items ... use your creativity to spark an interest. Simply fill out the donation form online: nbtfoundation.org/silent-auction.

NEW! ONLINE BIDDING Bid now at nbtfoundation.org/silent-auction/online-bidding! Winners do not need to be present to win, so even if you’re not attending the conference you can participate.

Remember—it’s all for a great cause and helps students find their way into the world of manufacturing.

Find out more about this event at nbtfoundation.org/silent-auction or by contacting Diane Engel at 815-381-1338 or [email protected]

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE GETS GREAT RESPONSE FMA and NBT president and CEO, Ed Youdell, leads by example to support the focus and mission of Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs. This is the second year in a row that Ed donated his own money to encourage students to join the manufacturing workforce through NBT’s scholarship and summer camp grant programs. He invited other company presidents to follow his lead and match his contribution of $1,500.

“Together, we can ensure the successful future of our manufacturing workforce.”

– Ed Youdell, president and CEO of FMA/NBT

Studies predict that within the next decade, up to 700,000 new jobs will be created as technology advances and our economy grows. Yet up to 2 million manufacturing jobs will be left unfilled due to retirements and a lack of qualified workers coming into the industry.*

The work of NBT is not complete as the skilled labor shortage will not end soon and will only get worse. NBT will continue to promote and encourage students of all ages to recognize and appreciate manufacturing as an interesting and fulfilling career choice.*Deloitte/Manufacturing Institute Study
