  • Loch Lomond Loch Lomond originates from the 1746 Battle

of Culloden Moor and the lyrics tell the story of two Scottish soldiers who were imprisoned in the battle. One was to be executed and the other set free. According to Celtic legend, if someone dies in a foreign land, his spirit will travel to the homeland by “the low road” - the route for the souls of the dead.

The final statement combines the Scottish tune with a well known Irish Tune, suggesting a spirit of human harmony.

The piece was commissioned in 2002 by Stewarton Academy Senior Wind Ensemble or East Ayrshire, Scotland and will be conducted today by Nicole Marshall.

Today’s performance of Serenade will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

42nd Street Overture Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 film

On a Hymn Song of Philip Bliss

Although the origins of the music upon which this piece is based are unclear, the lyrics to the hymn song to which the title refers were written by Horatio G Spafford after losing his daughters at sea on November 22, 1873.

Spafford wrote the hymn on his way to Paris after the accident which claimed his daughters’ lives at a place “on the high seas” near where his daughters had perished.

Composer David Holsinger’s compositions have won multiple competitions, and Holsiger himself has twice been recipient of the prestigious Oswalt Award for band composition, sponsored by the American Bandmasters’ Association.

Used as our hymn selection for the recent State Band Championships, today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

  • Sabre and Spurs

Composer John Philip Sousa was a devoted horseman and a dedicated rider and the galloping rhythm of the hoses which he so loved can be heard throughout this piece which Sousa penned in around 1917.

During the course of his 50+ year career, Sousa wrote 136 marches for Military Band.

This edition by Frederick Fennell was donated to the band by Mr. Keith Corcoran and will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons Mt. Pilatus, in Switzerland, is the

fabled home of the Dragons of Pilatus, the inspiration behind this piece of music.

In the words of the composer, Steven Reinke:

“This programmatic tone poem for Symphonic Band opens as Mount Pilatus slumbers at night, shrouded in darkness and mystery among the clouds high above Lucerne As dawn breaks, a band of courageous adventurers climb Pilatus in search of dragons to slay. After an arduous journey filled with breathtaking views and terrestrial beauty, the adventurers finally stumble across a dragon lair. They awaken the mighty dragon who must now battle the intruders of his domain. All but one adventurer are mortally wounded leaving the pitiful human to beg for mercy and forgiveness from the dragon. Demonstrating great compassion, the dragon produces a magical stone, called draconite, from his own wounds in order to heal and save the intruders. In doing so, the dragon has also placed compassion and tolerance in the hearts and minds of man, leading them to a happy and peaceful co-existence with the dragons of Pilatus”

Used as our Major Work selection for the recent State Band Championships, today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

Somewhere From the 1957 Broadway musical West

Side Story, a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The lyrics for the piece were written by Stephen Sondheim, and the music by Leonard Bernstein takes inspiration from Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

From Dawn to Dusk Written by Melbourne-based

composer Graham Lloyd and commissioned by Alan White, Director of Music at the Gold Coast City Wind Orchestra in 2007.

From Dawn to Dusk depicts a relaxing day on the Gold Coast and surrounding areas from just before dawn to the darkness following sunset.

With music donated to the band by Andrew Gower, today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

New Mexico March Written in 1928 for the Governor and the people of New Mexico, New

Mexico March is one of Sousa’s most unusual marches in which he departed considerably from his customary observance of traditional march form.

Although the piece begins in a customary Sousa march style, he then launches into a musical history of New Mexico, embracing with appropriate effects the music of the Indian, the Cavalry, the Mexican, and concludes with a happy fusion of these diverse elements.

This edition by Frederick Fennell was donated to the band by Mr. Keith Corcoran and will be conducted by Nicole Marshall.
