FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

As the days get shorter, darker, and colder, my lifechanges in several ways. I still bug Mom and Pop to gooutside (if I can’t annoy one of them enough to makethem stop what they are doing to take care of my needs,I just start in on the other), and still make sure that Iget out the door before Gypsy BUT I only stay out for aminute or so before I start bugging them to let me backinside. It’s just more comfortable inside! So I get lessexercise and excitement, just lie around and ruminate.

By now you know that dogs don’t wallow and moan aboutthe past and what might have been. We don’t think aboutthe future either, except the immediate future. We watchand notice all the details that might mean we are going fora ride or walk – what clothes is he wearing? Work clothes, church clothes or knock-around clothes? What is themood? Is he uptight like he gets if he is late for something?

Every break in routine is experienced to the max. Aride to the corner drugstore is treated like a trip toDisneyland. Any personal attention, in any form, istreated like a gift from on high, especially if it comesfrom Mom or Dad. Gypsy and I usually get so excitedthat it gets all out-of-hand and we end up gettingrebuked. We are so in-the-moment that I think we getmore joy from just lying around then two-leggers getfrom going to a show.

Little things mean a lot: singing along with a distantsiren or pack of coyotes howling, barking our heads offas if we had never heard our doorbell ring before.Sometimes we join the neighborhood dogs when theystart barking; we don’t know why but it is fun to be partof the chorus. Life is fun. Summer is more explosiveand intense. Winter is more laid back. But it’s all fun!

Hi! It’s me, Gizmo!

Yeah! I get another turn to discuss the world of 2 leggers. My Dad says he is getting married in a few weeks. He is all excited and says lots of people will be coming to the house and he keeps going to “parties?” Not surewhat they are except it seems to mean he is gone a lot more than usual. Mom tried to explain what a wedding isbut it just seems a little crazy to me. She said that the Bride and Groom get dressed up, spend a lot of money,go to something called a church and they get married. She says that means they live together forever. Thatsure seems like a lot of work for something that should be so simple. First of all I think 2 leggers wearenough clothes already without adding even more. After all I wear my fur every day and I do just fine.Second, I think cats and dogs have a better idea. We rub and/or sniff noses, necks and anywhere else that isinteresting and that lets us know how the other side feels about things, and then if we want to, we just staytogether. However, there must be something to this marriage thing, at least for 2 leggers, as Mom and Big Dhave done it for a long, long time and we have a nice snug and warm house with lots of love for all of us 4 leggers. Well, anyway, what brought about this depth of curiosity is they have been cleaning everything like crazy and that includes the RV. As you can imagine this is making Snoopy crazy especially because the RV hasbeen leaving the yard without him. To make matters worse, Mom says Snoopy cannot get in the RV untilafter everyone leaves – NO CAT FUR in the clean RV. Right now he is so upset he spends a lot of time in hisbed and pouts. Mom says he will get over it, but she is not on the same level as his face so she does not get thefull effect of such sad, put out looks. He should just be happy the 2 leggers have not decided to bathe all of us!

Guess that’s all for now,Your Cat Reporter, Gizmo

MEET SOME MAXFUND DOGSBy Ilene Johnson

DAYLA

Just look at thisirresistible smile!Dayla is a four yearold Boxer/AmericanBulldog mix. Thisgirl is searching fora special two-leggedfriend, and she justknows that you are out there. She is looking forsomeone who is patient, compassionate, loving andkind-hearted, that is, someone who is committed tohelping her learn that people are good. She wants toknow that people won’t hurt her, but are trustworthy.Dayla came from a rather abusive home, but was fortunately rescued by a good Samaritan who couldnot stand to see her hurt.

Dayla knows basic obedience commands, and mostimportant, she really wants to please, so can learn somuch more. It appears that some of her trauma was associatedwith leashes, and she is learning that leashes in fact leadto lovely walks, and were not designed to hurt her.

One of the volunteers who has fallen in love withDayla said that Dayla in fact walks very nicely on herleash, or on a harness. The volunteer also advised thatDayla is loves to play with toys, and loves belly rubsand kisses, and said that “Dayla is a big love who justneeds someone with time to devote to her.”

Dayla needs to be an only pet, and should be in ahome with no children, as she can be protective. Herfavorite pastimes include all kinds of fun things, like cuddling with stuffed toys, chasing balls, and sittingcalmly with loving humans.

Dayla is available for adoption. She is so looking forward to being someone’s best friend, confidante, and constant companion, to someone who will giveunconditional, enduring love. She promises to give her unconditional, enduring love in return!

TUGG

Check out this handsome little hunk! Tugg is a 2-year-oldChihuahua mix. In fact, that mix has been described as “partChihuahua and part sweetness.” Awww, too cute. And I canvouch first-hand for the fact that he is a very good kisser.

Tugg is one great little boy. Fresh air and walks are alwayson his agenda: He just loves his walks and does great ona leash. He knows his basic commands, and being thesmart little guy that he is, he is ready to learn so much more.

Tugg is looking for aforever home with acalm environment. He would prefer a home with older, well-mannered children. Tugg likesother little dogs. We’renot sure how he feelsabout cats.

Tugg is an athlete; one of the volunteers who has fallen inlove with him loves to take him on runs. And Tugg has along, sleek body, which is perfect for wiggling when youplay with him.

If you are ready to adopt a sweet boy who is a great snuggler,he is ready to be your loving and constant companion. Thatis quite a deal. Please come down to MaxFund to meet Tugg.

MIBZ

Mibz is a 10-year-oldMin Pin/mix. Whenasked what word bestdescribes her, the enthusiastic answerfrom the volunteers is“sweet!!!” And havinghad the pleasure of

meeting this little girl, I would add “very huggable” to the list of her attributes.

Mibz is pretty much the perfect “older” dog: She is stillactive, and she gets along with everyone, kids, otherdogs, and cats. She is perfectly housebroken too.

Mibz loves to cuddle, and she loves being around people. She is so easy-going and friendly.

Mibz is also quiet in her kennel. She loves her walks, and gets along well in play groups.

Really, what more could you ask for? Mibz is availablefor adoption, as well as for fostering, in case you arenot ready for a forever commitment. Please come andmeet this sweet, cuddly girl.

Dear MaxFund,

Four years ago I adoptedKoda from MaxFund. When I came to pick himup, he jumped into mycar like he knew he wasgoing home. At thatpoint I knew he wasgoing to be perfect.

He has moved across the country with me (he’s aWisconsin dog now!), learned how to sit in a kayak and

snuggled me as I’ve cried. I just wanted to say thankyou for letting me take him home with me that day, you have no idea how much beauty he has brought into my life.

A MATTER OF PRIORITYA follow-up in Colorado confirms a national study in1995: Despite years of economic challenges, the price ofservices is a distant fourth in pet owners' choice of a veterinarian. The American Animal Hospital Associationreports that pet owners' priorities remain as they werenearly two decades ago: They most want a veterinarianwho is interested in the well-being of the pet (74 percent),who has excellent medical knowledge (68 percent) andwho explains things thoroughly (42 percent), accordingto Pet Age magazine. “Services are well priced” wasfourth at 29 percent, and just 1 percentage point ahead of "comforting to my pet" the magazine said.

APP-PROPRIATEA new, free, smartphone app called ICE Blackboxallows those who see animal abuse to record it andseamlessly report it to law enforcement. The app is acollaboration between the National Sheriff 'sAssociation and the Humane Society of the UnitedStates, and may be downloaded via iTunes for iPhonesand Google Play for Android systems.

In one touch and in as little at 30 seconds via the cloud,ICE Blackbox transmits video, audio and GPS locationto the National Law Enforcement Center for AnimalAbuse and sends a text or email to local emergencycontacts, the sheriff 's association said.

ON THE BRAINBacked by “compelling evidence” that interacting withpets is beneficial to the physical, social and emotionalwell-being of humans, a small study at MassachusettsGeneral Hospital in Boston indicates that dogs increaseactivity in some areas of the brain associated withmaternal bonding with a child.

Researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to documentoxygen levels and blood flow in the brains of 16 motherswho had a child 2 to 10 years old and dog in the home forat least two years. Fourteen women completed the study. In every case areas of the brain associated with emotion, reward, affiliation, visual processing and social interaction

showed increased activity when the women viewed picturesof their own children and pets as opposed to unfamiliarchildren and dogs. Yet one area of the brain known to bekey in the formation of the maternal-child bond showedincreased activity only when the women viewed imagesof their own children, researchers said.

Further study is needed, they said, to determine whetherthe effect of pets holds in other populations, such aswomen without children, fathers and parents of adoptedchildren. Also unknown is whether the latest findings willextend to relationships with other types of pets.

CONNECTION CENTRALFetchFind.com is a just-launched online platform tobring together pet industry professionals and qualifiedand dedicated employees. Besides job searches basedon a badge system — for example "Brand Whisperer”for sales and marketing executives; “Leader of theLeash” for dog walkers; and“Curator of Fine Furs” ofpet groomers—it soon will offer opportunities foraspiring pet industry professionals to increase theirexpertise through online learning modules, said websitefounder Jaime Damato Midgal, of Chicago.

BRIDGING THE COMMUNICATION GAPA device the size of a deck of cards is bridging communicationbetween humans and dogs, with potential applicationsfrom service animals to search-and-rescue canines andthe training of personal pets.

Engineers and computer scientists at North Carolina StateUniversity have created a prototype of sophisticated sensorsand communication technology that fits comfortably on aharness to relay a dog's body language: They’re sitting, standing, roaming, or running. Other sensors track heartrate and body temperature, which indicate excitement orstress. That technology is paired with speakers and vibrat-ing motors, called haptics, that together with softwareallow humans to remotely direct the dog's behavior or in aphysical setting, according to David Roberts, an assistantprofessor of computer science involved in the project.

In search and rescue, sensors maybe added to detectgas leaks or other hazards to a dog, and in the serviceindustry, guide dogs may live longer lives if humans areable to understand their stresses and ameliorate them, the university said in a statement.

The next step is to miniaturize the technology to betterunderstand and communicate with dogs in animalshelters and veterinary hospitals, scientists said.

HOMEWARD BOUND: A PLEAFOR PET FOSTERSBy Phil McPeck

If adoption counselor Erica Jenkins wanted a theme for the most special dogs and cats at MaxFund AnimalAdoption Center, there is the opening stanza ofAmerican western standard “Home on the Range.”

“Oh, give me a home …”

Even if it’s a temporary home. No need to be where thebuffalo roam and the antelope play.

Already MaxFund has more than 25 dogs and some50 cats and kittens in foster care, but that doesn’ttouch the need at Denver's premier no-kill shelter.Fifteen to 20 more dogs and three times that manycats would benefit greatly by a move to a fosterhome, Jenkins said.

“Fostering is about providing a home when nobodyelse is willing to,” she said. “It’s really hard to findsomeone who will wake up every two hours to bottlefeed a kitten or puppy. I have only one foster who willdo puppies.”

So MaxFund’s appeal to those who have adopted a petis to consider fostering one, as well, and to plant theidea in the minds of friends and family members.Jenkins herself has been pet foster “parent,” as havemany of the staff at the MaxFund dog and cat adoptioncenters and MaxFund Wellness Clinic. The threefacilities form a tight triangle on the southwest edgeof downtown Denver: the dog shelter is at 1005Galapago St., the wellness clinic behind is at 1000Inca St., and the cat shelter across the street from the two is at 720 W. 10th Ave.

There are reasons that even “cat people” or “dog people”are reluctant to foster a pet, but there are advantages of having a foster pet, too, Jenkins said.

Some potential “foster parents” fear an emotionalattachment with a pet that may find a permanenthome. Cats and dogs in foster care are featured inphoto albums at the MaxFund adoption centers and onMaxFund's website — www.Maxfund.org — and maycatch the eye and win the heart of a visitor looking fora furry companion. Foster care givers agree to make theirtemporary charges available to meet prospective adoptersat MaxFund or elsewhere, and to take them to certainevents where they have an opportunity to be adopted.

Besides the possibility that a pet may find a permanenthome, it's a fact that many of those in need of fostercare have some kind of issue. They may have a medicalchallenge, need socialization or simply be considerablyolder than the pups and kitties that tend to be adoptedmore quickly at the shelters. Last year, MaxFundplaced 1,572 dogs and cats in permanent homes. It also spayed or neutered 4,990 animals.

A foster setting helps injured animals heal more quickly, overcome obesity or anxiety, recover from depression, and more, Jenkins said.

MaxFund is careful to place animals in appropriatehomes. For instance a dog with separation anxietywould not go to a home where the care giver is awayfor much of the day, she said. Similarly, “I don't wantto send a dog that chases cats if the home is full ofcats.” The foster care process also takes into account ananimal's compatibility with children in the home, thepet's mobility and the home environment.

Foster caregivers go through an application processsimilar to pet adoption and are responsible for providingquality food, pet toys and a safe, secure environment.Care givers are not without support, however.

There is open access to MaxFund's foster coordinatoror a vet tech to answer health and behavior questions;prescription food, vaccines, medications, collars andtags are provided; and veterinary care at the wellnesscenter is covered, Jenkins said.

A foster application is available at www.maxfund.org.Cat people and dog people interested in enhancingtheir lives with foster pet also may [email protected].

The Scoop continued from page 7

FIVE POINTSWorld-renowned dog trainer Cesar Milan, also known asthe “Dog Whisperer” and for his latest show “Cesar 911”on the cable television’s “Nat Geo Wild,” offers pointers inmeeting a dog to avoid unwanted behavior or worse:being interpreted as a threat.

The bottom line at www.cesarsway.com is:

Be calm. Acting excited can encourage a friendly dog to jump or incite the flight-or-fight instinct in a wary canine.

Give the dog its space — at least 4 feet. Rather than speaking to an unfamiliar dog, speak to the face of its owner, thereby establishing trust in the animal.

Introduce yourself to the dog by facing the same way it is and approach from the side and at the dog’s level. Avoid eye contact, which may be interpreted as a challenge.

Calmly allow the animal to come to you and show acceptance. If you pet it, do so on the front chest, your hand never reaching to the dog from above.

When you adopt a dog, walk it frequently. It will help establish you as the leader of your home “pack.”
