FROM THE WORLD OF GUSSnow! That word struck terror in the hearts of SouthCarolinians. Both Gypsy and I grew up there beforebeing rescued by Mom and Dad. We lived in what wascalled the “upstate” about an hour from the Blue RidgeMountains, so we got a little snow each year. It usuallywouldn’t stick on the pavement and leave an inch on thegrass for a few hours. But they were paralyzed by thethought of slippery roads. They literally closed the schoolsand most of the businesses (except for Walmart) before iteven happened if snow were predicted by the weatherman.

When Mom and Dad moved back to Colorado with meand the rest of the animal family, I didn’t know what toexpect. Guess what? Both Gypsy and I love the snow. The snow here is like playing in white corn flakes. Werun and tackle each other and fall in the fluff. We runfast and try to turn and feel our rear ends slide out likethose cars that race each other on TV. We throw snowup in the air and try to run under it as it falls to the ground. My favorite thing is to use my nose as a snowplow as I run through a deep pile and feel it spray up over myface. I guess there has to be some advantage to havinga big nose!

With my bum leg, I still don’t like to lie down for along time when it is really cold outside. But here inColorado, it doesn’t usually stay cold that long, sometimeseven snows when the sun is shining. Back home when itgot cold and damp it just seemed to stay that way. I’mhappy to call myself a Coloradan now and, like everybodyelse, pretend that I am a native.

As for the snow, bring it on!

P.S. News flash! Since I wrote this a snowstorm did hit the South with 2 – 5 inches and the Governor of SouthCarolina declared a state of emergency.

Hello,

It is my turn again to impart “Cat Thoughts”.

Well, the other day Mom was in what she calls the Laundry Room. That is the room where 2 leggers puttheir changeable “clothes” after they wear them and want to put on something else. Clothes are like fur(except we keep ours on all the time) but they must not be as warm as they put 2 or 3 things on top of eachother. Also, their clothes are split, a front half and a back half (top and bottom if you prefer). Two leggerssure look funny without their clothes, sort of like baby mice before they get their fur. Not necessarily apretty sight. Anyway, instead of licking their clothes to get them clean the way we do our fur, they putthem into a machine with a big window on the front. Now Gizmo and I find this window to be veryinteresting. Mom turns on the machine, it squirts water onto the clothes (I prefer the licking better thanthe water) and then the clothes go around in one direction for a while and then back the other direction. The really weird thing is it looks like there are big snowflakes inside the machine. We thought you onlygot snowflakes outside when it was cold but the laundry room is nice and cozy. We are confused.Anyway, we often sit and watch the clothes go round and round and have even pawed at the window tochase the snowflakes. We can’t get to them but they are fun to chase; Mom just laughs at us.

Let’s see…What else is new? Well, Mom is talking about Spring Cleaning and if I remember correctlythat means lots of fun stuff to play with while she moves stuff and throws stuff out. I will keep you postedon the fun as it unfolds (sounds very “soap opera” doesn’t it). Humm, I wonder if that has anything to dowith laundry?

DRAW YOUR DOGFUNDRAISER FOR MAXFUND

aul Atzmiller, a professional fundraising illustrator, has come up with a unique way to share his talentand raise money for MaxFund. It works like this:

Send Paul a GOOD photo of your dog (He’ll keep the photo for advertising). Paul will draw a FREE, 9” x 12” black & white, highly detailed pencil drawing of your dog’s head (you'll receive it in about 10 days, if there is no one ahead of you).

Paul will send you the drawing and a MaxFund donationform. You write a check in the amount of your choiceand send it to MaxFund with the form. He does notwant to know the amount you've donated or even ifyou've donated – it’s all on the Honor System!

To date, Paul has drawn 317 dogs just for MaxFundand a total of 577 dogs for numerous U.S. animal rescue and adoption agencies, and two Internationalagencies over the past sixteen + years. Because of hisanonymous donation concept, he estimates that he hasraised over $30,000!

If you are interested in his “Draw Your Dog” offer, pleasesend your good quality (head shot) photo to:

Paul E. Atzmiller, 10438 Ellison Place, Littleton, CO 80125

Please include your phone number and return address! He can also be reached at [email protected] or byphone: 303-933-4924.

DID YOU KNOW...

Cats purr at a frequency of vibration that aids bone and tissue growth and repair.

Cats also produce a “silent” meow which is thought to be a request for attention or a show of genuineaffection from cat to owner. It is pitched too highfor the human ear to hear.

Most cats eyes glow silvery green when light is shown into them at night, but Siamese cats eyes glow red.

Cats eyes function in about 1/6 the light needed for human vision but cannot function in complete darkness.

Cats memory can last up to 16 hours in contrast toa dogs memory that last about 5 minutes.

A cat can jump from a standing start to over 5 times its body height.

One female cat averages 6 kittens per year, 75% of which die before reproductive age.

One female cat and her offspring will produce 100cats in 7 years.

38% of US households own a cat.

Dear MaxFund,

We wanted to send an update nearlya year later of our sweet gals that weadopted last February from yourshelter. Both were in the shy room, and had been returned a number oftimes. Isabella (now Mimo) andEbony (now Marma) are thriving, affectionate, confident cats! They’reabsolutely wonderful friends to havein our home, and we can’t thank youenough for what you do.

Both gals are lap cats...you can’t sitanywhere without someone onyour lap! Marma loves to chat andchat and chat...and Mimo loves toplay with her string and burrowunder blankets.

With time, patience, spirit essences, and a few cat trees, we’ve reallywatched both cats come to life. Theyhave great personalities and havebecome very comfortable in theirnew home. We moved back toCleveland from Denver and theyboth did amazing on the trip!

This experience just goes to showthat any cat can be a wonderfulcompanion with patience and love. Ibegan as a volunteer and was able tosee the differences in personalities.Cats act completely different in theshelter environment, and eachshould be given a chance. Especiallywith Mimo...in the shy room she hid

her face in the wall, and didn’t like to be touched. Now she doesn’t leaveour side!

Please enjoy the pictures below andfeel free to pass onto any volunteers oruse our letter in any way possible tohelp promote the shelter.

Thank you so much,Renee Hauser & Ron SharplessMimo and Marma

Dear MaxFund,

My name is Luna and I spent sometime in MaxFundand was adopteda little beforeChristmas. Here’s a pictureof me and mynew best friend, Peanut. I’m the one on the left, with the shorter, cuter nose. I’ve gained some weight, and I now sleepunder the covers in bed. I’ve made some new catsfriends. Cats are soft and warm, and they let me curl upnext to them. As you can see, I’ve found my foreverhome, and am warm, safe, and happy. Thanks, Maxfund, for giving me the break I needed to find my place andbegin to thrive.

Hello MaxFund,

This is a little update on Kadee aka, Carmel. We adoptedher from you in August of 2012. She had been abandonedin her yard by her former owners. Her age was estimateat 12 at the time and she chose us literally the first timewe saw her by coming up to us leaning on us and wagging her tail.

She had some medical issues which she fought through in her first 2 months with us. She soon taught us what she wanted and needed so the transition was easy. She took walks with us for about 8 months before her joints started giving her problems. After that she walked when she wanted to. As time progressed her condition

declined and after an ultrasound it showed she hadnumerous growths on her liver and kidneys. We keptKadee comfortable and she stayed with us as long as shecould and passed away this past September. She was atrue fighter as she didn’t want to leave her good life withus. She didn’t give us a large block of time but the timewe shared was all so special and she left a big holein our family.

We want to thank you for giving us the opportunity tohave the time we had with Kadee. The older animalshave their own special qualities to give us. We just haveto give them the time to share with us.

Thank you,Jimmy & Dianne Shinto

RUPERTA Handsome, Young ChihuahuaBy Ilene Johnson

heck out this handsome guy! Rupert is a three-year-old Chihuahua mix. He is described as having asweet smile, a graceful neck and long, long legs.

Rupert gets along well with dogs, big and small, andwith cats as well. He loves the little dog play groups atMaxFund, and always plays well with the other dogs.He would do best with children that are older than 8and who are gentle.

Rupert is a quiet little guy, and he is also very loving. One of the volunteers who has fallen in love with himsaid that he just wants to jump into her arms and giveher kisses.

Rupert also loves going on walks, and does very well on aleash. While on his walks, he likes to meet everyone thatwalks by, just like an ambassador of good will!

He does not like to be left home alone, so would do bestin a home where he can spend a lot of time with you. Aswith any new addition to your home, Rupert will need toget a housetraining routine. He is a smart guy who willcatch on quickly!

Rupert is really wants to find his forever home!

A HAPPY ENDINGAbused kitten has a new chance at lifewith adoptive familyBy Sally Rummel

his is a follow-up for a story we ran in ourDecember, 2013 issue. Cat Rescue Before theCrim (Flint, Michigan)

If cats do indeed have nine lives, Tinsel is certainlyhappy to have a new chance at a second life.

Rescued from an abusive situation last August byout-of-town Crim Festival of Races runner AnnRamos, of Denver, Colo., Tinsel (her new adoptedname) spent three months at the Animal HealthClinic in Fenton. Dr. Sandy Smith took one look atthis emaciated, flea-infested kitten with a huge infection on her leg from having a clothesline cordtied around it, and saw hope for a new life.

“I knew that if she had her leg amputated, she woulddo just fine and could be adopted out,” said Smith.Dr. Jackie Pozniak of Town Center VeterinaryAssociation in Howell, provided the orthopedicsurgery at no cost, and Smith committed herself tocaring for the kitten, which she renamed Peggy, untilshe could find an adoptive family for her.

Meanwhile, back home in Denver, Ramos had aheavy heart when thinking about the abused kitten

she had found and left behind. When she returned inFenton in December to visit family over the holidays, she called the clinic on Dec. 22 to inquire aboutPeggy, and was told that she had just been adoptedout two days before.

“I was so relieved and happy to hear this good news,”said Ramos, who already has three cats of her ownback in Denver. “If she hadn’t found a home yet, Iwas willing to take her back with me, but I was concerned about how hard the flight would be onher. I’m glad this all worked out.”

The kitten’s new home is with Robert and LindseyVosk of Flint. They had been taking their elderly catto the Animal Health Clinic and when they finallyhad to say goodbye to their long-time companionjust after Thanksgiving, it left a huge void in theirlives. That is, until they met Peggy, and it was “loveat first sight.” “From the moment we saw her, weknew she was meant to be with us,” said Lindsey, ahuman resource manager.

She and Robert, a teacher, renamed her Tinsel, because Christmas is their favorite holiday, and theywere so happy to share it with her this year. “Robertended up with almost three weeks off work becauseof Christmas vacation and snow days, so they had alot of time to bond and get to know each other,” sheadded.

“She is such a blessing for us.”

What to do if you witness animal abuse...If it’s clearly a case of animal abuse, call the localpolice department. If you suspect abuse or extremeneglect, call animal control.

Tinsel is an affectionate, energetic kitten thatenjoys playing in her new home.

If cats do indeed have ninelives, Tinsel is certainly

happy to have a new chanceat a second life.
