Starter: Look at the front and back covers of ‘The Adventures of Thandie the Tandem’ – how might this book inspire our geography topic this term? (Think/Pair/Share) Create a mind map/spider diagram together on the board in collaboration with the class – can be printed and glued into books for evidence.Input:Looking at key geographical vocabulary – who can spot any used on the covers of the book? – children might source: compass and points (picture), Africa, London, Kenya, countries, desert, border, Africa – note these on the board.Activity 1:Children to write following key words onto whiteboards: Hemisphere, continent, country, city – can children put these into an order and explain the order they have chosen? – groups of 4 – 1 word each – can photograph children to glue into books as evidence if necessaryActivity 2:Children to complete matching activity – can work together in pairs/groups but can glue matching activity straight into books. Mark together.Children to write something they have learned this lesson.Extension/plenary:Can the children identify which category their keywords from the book fit into? Starter:Recap learning from last lesson by completing cloze activity together on board.Input:Explain that we are going to find the countries that Thandie and Timmy travelled through on their journey to Kenya. How might we do this?Model how to use the contents page to find the world map in the atlas/index page to find specific countries – children will need to be able to see the country in context to be able to locate it on the world map – elicit this point.Activity:Children to label Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, Europe and a variety of countries from the trip onto a world map.Extension:Children to find out the capital cities of the countries through which Thandie passed.Plenary:Mark together and discuss challenges – e.g. lots of countries/weather to ride through/terrain/languages (will link to next lesson)Can children beat time/accuracy on the sporcle quiz?
