    Heidelberg Catechism Q. 56. What believest thou concerning “the forgiveness of sins”? A.

    That God, for the sake of Christ’s satisfaction, will no more remem-

    ber my sins, neither my corrupt nature, against which I have to struggle all my life long; but will graciously impute to me the righteousness of Christ, that I may never be condemned before the tribunal of God.

  • MORNING WORSHIP

    November 22, 2020

    9:30 a.m.

    Prelude

    Apostolic Greeting

    * God’s Call to Worship Psalm 84:1-2

    How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!

    My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.

    * Hymn of Praise #6 O Come, My Soul, Bless Thou the Lord

    * Prayer of Adoration

    * Affirmation of Faith – Apostles’ Creed

    I believe in God the Father Almighty,

    Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord,

    who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

    he descended into hell1. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic2 church,

    the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

  • * Confession of Sin

    God the Father, have mercy on us.

    God the Son, redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, have mercy on us.

    Holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, have mercy on us.

    From all evil and mischief; from pride, vanity, and hypocrisy;

    from envy, hatred and malice; and from all evil intent, Good Lord, deliver us. From sloth, worldliness and love of money; from hardness of heart and contempt for your word and your laws,

    Good Lord, deliver us. From sins of body and mind;

    from the deceits of the world, the flesh, and the devil, Good Lord, deliver us.

    From famine and disaster; from violence, murder, and dying unprepared, Good Lord, deliver us. In all times of sorrow, in all times of joy; in the hour of death,

    and at the day of judgment, Good Lord, deliver us.

    By the mystery of your holy incarnation; by your birth, childhood, and obedience; by your baptism, fasting, and temptation, Good Lord, deliver us.

  • By your ministry in word and work; by your mighty acts of power;

    and by your preaching of the kingdom, Good Lord, deliver us.

    By your agony and trial; by your cross and suffering; and by your precious death and burial, Good Lord, deliver us. By your mighty resurrection;

    by your glorious ascension; and by your sending of the Holy Spirit, Good Lord, deliver us.

    Give us true repentance; forgive us our sins of negligence and ignorance and our deliberate

    sins; and grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit to amend our lives according to your holy word. Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal,

    have mercy upon us.

    Assurance of Pardon Romans 5:8-9

    But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

    * Hymn of Thanks Psalm 145A, vv. 1-4

    I Will Exalt You, O My God and King Songbook p.65

    Reading of God’s Word

    Psalm 51

    51 Have mercy on me, O God,

    according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned

  • and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words

    and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

    and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;

    you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;

    build up the walls of Jerusalem; 19 then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

    Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession

    The Lord’s Prayer

    Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

    Hymn of Preparation Praise the Savior, Now and Ever Songbook p.11

    Prayer for Illumination

    Reading of God’s Word Luke 18:1-17

    18 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought al-ways to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and say-ing, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he re-

    fused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by

    her continual coming.’” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the un-righteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over

    them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Neverthe-less, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

    9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that

    they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, ex-tortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I

    fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax

    collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

    15 Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the

    kingdom of God. 17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive

    the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
