I created a &echa 'ucha &resentation about the terrorist or"ani(ation ISIS )Islamic State of

    Iraq and Syria*+ ISIS is a quic'ly "ro%in" militant "rou&, %hich is %rea'in" havoc in the

Middle ast and usin" barbaric tactics to &ersecute its enemies+ -fter vie%in" the &resentation

the audience %as able to identify %hat ISIS is and their "oals as %ell as %hy the militant "rou& isa le"itimate threat to the .nited States+ /he audience for the &resentation included students,

teachers and anyone loo'in" to learn more about the militant "rou&+

I desi"ned the &resentation to educate the audience on the threat of ISIS+ /he audience

%as &rom&ted to "et involved in the matter by sharin" information %ith others and considerin"

%hat they could do &romote safety in their home, school, community or nation by contactin"elected re&resentatives+ I used 0im& to edit &hotos, -udacity to record the audio trac' and

    Microsoft Movie Ma'er to create the video+ I u&loaded the video to ou/ube as a &ostin" and

    sharin" resource+

    Desi"n Decisions

    I created the &echa 'ucha &resentation usin" overla&&in" desi"n &rinci&les in mind+ I

    em&hasi(ed sim&licity as a 'ey decision because I %anted the ima"es to do a ma;ority of thecommunicatin"+ I incor&orated the use of emotional a&&eal to add concreteness to the

&resentation+ I also layered contrast %ithin the use of em&ty s&ace to hei"hten the meanin" of

    the ima"es I created+

    Simplicity

$ne of the bi""est desi"n elements of my &echa 'ucha &resentation %as the use of

    sim&licity+ /he discussion of ISIS can be a com&licated one, %ith many different issuessurroundin" it+ Medina )2 )Ch+@, Par16*+

    Emotional Appeal

I em&hasi(ed the use of emotional a&&eal in the &resentation+ -s stated by Medina )2

violent acts committed overseas+ Aarely, do %e %itness the horrific acts of the terror "rou&+ /he

    ima"es dis&layed at !, !2 and 6 allo%ed the audience to ma'e an emotional connection

to those affected by the terror "rou&+ Eeath and Eeath )2 )Ch+2, Par69*+ I

%anted the information to not only stic' %ith the audience but for it to have si"nificance as %ell+

    I incor&orated a se"ment of information of %hy ISIS is a le"itimate threat to the .nited States,

this %as vie%ed from @!#6!+ I tau"ht the audience the basics of ISIS, but more im&ortantly%hy the events hold si"nificance+

    Contrast

    I &ur&osefully incor&orated a fair amount of contrastin" %ithin the &resentation+ I %anted

to "ive to ma'e the &resentation more dynamic since little te8t %as used+ Aeynolds )2

    Image Selection

    Perha&s the most critical &art of the &resentation %as the selection of ima"es+ I s&ent

    countless hours &lannin" and selectin" the ima"es I thou"ht %ere the best fit+ I tailored every

    ima"e I found on the %eb in order to e8tract the &recise meanin" I %anted from them+ It %asheld by Aeynolds )2 )Ch+@, Par!*+ I 'e&t the &ictures as the focus of the &resentation by

    limitin" te8tual information+ Aoam )2 )&+1@!*+ I used te8tual information on a fe% of the slides, %hich %ere vie%ed at 2,

    12, 1!, @ and @!+

    Story Telling

I chose a format to tell the story many victims in the Middle ast do not have the &o%er

    to tell+ Duarte )21* reminded =the most sim&listic %ay to describe the structure of a story issituation, com&lication, and resolution> )&+2*+ I chose to &lace the audio trac' and ima"es in a

sequence that mirrored a be"innin", middle and endin"+ /he be"innin" described the situation

)#12*, the middle described the com&lication of the situation )1!#6* %hile the call toaction %as communicated at )6#6!*+ It %as held by Duarte )21* =stories &ac'a"e

information in a %ay that &eo&le remember+ -ttachin" a "reat story to the bi" idea ma'e it easily

    re&eatable beyond the &resentation> )&+1!

Does the &resentation scheme dis&lay the element of sim&licity4 If not %hat %ould you

    recommend4 I too' a very com&licated to&ic and made it is sim&le+

Peer Reviewer A:I learned quite a bit from your Pecha Kucha+ I did not 'no% a lot of the factsyou "ave about ISIS, but I thin' your &resentation mi"ht be more &ersuasive if you focused less

on definitions at the be"innin" of the &resentation+ It %asnBt until half %ay throu"h that I started

to hear %hy %e should be afraid of ISIS+

Peer Reviewer :es sim&le and easy to follo%+

Consi!erations: I left the introductory information about Islam intact %ithin the &resentation+ Ireally feel that in order to understand ISIS the audience needs to 'no% and understand the basics

of %hy these events are ha&&enin"+ It is more im&ortant to understand %hy somethin" is

occurrin" and not only %hat is occurrin"+

    Peer Review Question #"

Does the &resentation have emotional a&&eal to it4 Should I also incor&orate music4 I %ant theaudience to be emotionally en"a"ed by the situation ISIS has created+

Peer Reviewer A:It does have emotional a&&eal+ Some of the ima"es are terrifyin"+ I %ouldnBtadd music, but I %ould chan"e the inflection of your voice to corres&ond %ith some of the

horrible acts committed by ISIS+ Let the audience hear an"er or other emotions in your voice+

Peer Reviewer :I donBt thin' music is necessary+ ou have a &leasant voice and your &ace is"ood there are no lon" silences+ es # there is an emotional a&&eal+

Consi!erations: I decided to not add music and I did chan"e the inflection of my voice at

certain &arts to reinforce the information bein" &resented+

    Peer Review Question #

Do you feel that I have done enou"h to embed a call to action %ithin the &resentation4 If not,

%hat could I do to ma'e it stron"er4 I %ant the audience to feel em&o%ered, that they can dosomethin" about this a%ful situation+

Peer Reviewer A:I thin' you could accom&lish this by usin" %hat I su""ested in my other t%o

comments+ 0et mad and hit the audience %ith your call to action at the be"innin" of the&resentation+ /hin' of the audio cli& =IBm mad as hell, and IBm not "oin" to ta'e it anymore>+

Peer Reviewer :I thin' there is definitely a call to action+ Maybe instead of sayin", =I hi"hly

recommend,> and, =&ossibly even,> at the end, be more authoritative+ ou could say somethin"

li'e, =Protect yourself by stayin" informed about ISIS and contact your re&resentative to see%hat actions our "overnment %ill &ut in&lace+>

Consi!erations: I left the call of action at the end of the &resentation because it is the resolution

    or endin"+

Peer Review Question #$% Do the ima"es I used convey the messa"e of ISIS a&&ro&riately4 I

    sim&ly %ant to ma'e sure I didnBt incor&orate any ima"es that mi"ht cross the line in terms ofbein" =too much+>

    Peer Reviewer A:/he ima"es are e8cellent -"ain, I %ould use more shoc'in" ima"es earlier in

    the &resentation+

    Peer Reviewer :I thou"ht your ima"es %ere e8cellent+

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Daniel Medina 11#16#1!

Consi!erations: I decided to leave all the ima"es as they are, because they tell the story of ISIS+

    Peer Review Question #&%

Did I cover the @JBs of ISIS %ell enou"h and does the information connect bac' to the learnin"

    tar"ets of the &resentation4

Peer Reviewer A: ou did cover the @ JBs %ell, but %as this actually your ob;ective4 I donBtthin' that %e need to 'no% everythin" about them to 'no% %e should be afraid of the threat they

&ose+ I do thin' %e need a brief overvie% of %ho they are, but only as far as it e8&lains %hy they

    are a threat+

Peer Reviewer :I thin' you thorou"hly e8&lained ISIS and made the to&ic easy to understand+

Consi!erations: I left the information as it is+ /o be able understand ISIS and their "oals, they

should 'no% the very basics about the terror "rou&+ -lso, I believe the information conveyed in

the &resentation ties directly into the learnin" ob;ectives+

    Lessons Learned

I learned creatin" a &echa 'ucha &resentation ta'es an e8treme about of time to outline and

create+ It %as difficult to "et all of the information in %ithin the allotted 2 second time frame+ It

actually forced me to be more accurate and concise %ith the audio trac'+ /hrou"h the &rocess, I

    learned ho% to &hoto sho& ima"es because I had never used ima"e editin" soft%are li'e 0im&

    before+ /o be honest, I %ill never a"ain do a &resentation about a terror "rou&+ -lthou"h it

interests me and is relevant to our society, it %as very disturbin" seein" all of the ima"es+ I found

myself sittin" and truly feelin" devastated for the victims and concerned about the safety of our

    nation+
